Wal-Mart's arrival in District looks like welcome advance for shopping, jobs

Wal-Mart's arrival in District looks like welcome advance for shopping, jobs Thursday, February 10, 2011 When politicians, agency officials and other establishment types discuss the pros and cons of Wal-Mart opening stores in poor, retail-starved neighborhoods in the District, they often talk about pretty high-minded stuff. Fair pay. Job training. Environmental safeguards. By contrast, in the scruffy blocks around the corner of New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road in Northeast Washington, where the first of four Wal-Marts planned for the District would probably be built, the residents have more immediate, street-level concerns. First, would a new Wal-Mart there really stock the same ...

China row over synchronised goldfish magic trick
Post Date: 2011-02-16 07:40:29 by Tatarewicz

Chinese animal rights groups are urging TV stations not to show a magic trick of goldfish swimming in formation. They believe the performance could involve the use of magnets and therefore harm the fish. Campaigners want the act dropped from variety shows to be broadcast on Thursday to mark the end of the Chinese New Year holiday. The magician at the centre of the controversy, Fu Yandong, denies he harms the fish. The trick has amazed audiences across China, appearing on one of the biggest shows of the year, China Central Television's New Year's Eve special. Magician's code Mr Fu takes six goldfish and releases them into a shallow tank. He somehow gets them to swim ...

Breitbart facing shutdown?

Former US Department of Agriculture employee Shirley Sherrod has made good on her word: she's suing conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart. Last year, he published a video of her describing to an NAACP conference how she long ago overcame her own racist attitudes. However, a video from that speech was deceptively edited to make it appear that she was describing how she used the power of the government against a white farmer. She was fired from her post within hours of the clip hitting Breitbart's website. In truth, Sherrod's story was about how she conquered her prejudice and used her power to help a family in need, and how that couple remained her friends even so many years ...

What Has America Become? (a letter to the editor)

What Has America Become? By Ken Huber Originally printed in the Iosco County News Herald on June 9, 2010 Editor, Has America become the land of the double standard? Lets see: if we lie to the Congress, it's a felony and if the Congress lies to us its just politics; if we dislike a black person, we're racist and if a black person dislikes whites, its their 1st Amendment right; the government spends millions to rehabilitate criminals and they do almost nothing for the victims; in public schools you can teach that homosexuality is OK, but you better not use the word God in the process; you can kill an unborn child, but it is wrong to execute a mass murderer; we don't burn ...

The New York congressman formally submitted a resignation letter to House Speaker John Boehner. "It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness," he said in a statement. He’s Just Not That Into Anyone Even, and perhaps especially, when his girlfriend is acting like the women he can’t stop watching online. By Davy Rothbart I met the woman at a Broadway show, but the night’s best piece of acting, I’d say, came from me, back at her East Village apartment, after we’d been having sex for about 25 minutes, with Neil Young wailing the song “Comes a Time” from the laptop on her bedside table. The dried-out condom had a full-bodied choke hold on me, but I’d already stopped twice to put on a fresh one, and I knew, as I kept earnestly pumping away, that one more condom wouldn’t make the necessary difference. Had I just ...

HERE IN THIS HOUSE: An animal's prayer

Here in this house... I will never know the loneliness that I hear in the cries of the other animals 'out there.' I can sleep soundly, assured that when I wake my world will not have changed. I will never know hunger, or the fear of not knowing if I will eat. I will not shiver in the cold, or grow weary from the heat, but rather, I will nap in the sun's warmth, and play in the rain's coolness, and be allowed to smell all that can reach my nose. My fur will shine, and never be dirty or matted. Here in this house... There will be an effort to communicate with me on my level. I will be talked to, and, even if I don't understand, I can enjoy the warmth of the ...

Are libraries finished? Five arguments for and against

With more than 400 public libraries under threat of closure, the campaign to save them is gathering pace. But in an age of downloads, cheap books and easy online shopping, can this great British institution survive? Some of the UK's best-selling authors have joined the fight against "cultural vandalism" by backing a national day of protest read-ins against library closures on Saturday. But no matter how eloquently Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy or author Colin Dexter extol their virtues, the fact is library visitor numbers - like their budgets - are falling. Campaigners say they are irreplaceable doors to learning more relevant now than ever before, but for others the ...

Reagan Revisionism: Planned Centennial Commemoration Hoopla - by Stephen Lendman A weeklong infomercial followed his death on June 5, 2004, mythology airbrushing truth, including Marilyn Berger in the New York Times, saying: "To a nation hungry for a hero, a nation battered by Vietnam, damaged by Watergate and humiliated by the taking of hostages in Iran, Ronald Reagan held out the promise of a return to greatness, the promise that American would 'stand tall' again." Quoting admirers and critics, she called him a "great communicator," a "made-for-television president (who) never lost his boyish charm or his ability to look Americans in the eye and make ...

I just saw a documentary on the history channel and it prompted me to send you the following. In WWII, Japan's highest ranking naval officer was Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto. Although he was Japanese, and his loyalties were unquestionably with The Empire, he studied for many years in America, graduating from Harvard University. There are two oft-repeated (and sometimes disputed) quotes attributed to him regarding the possibility of starting a war with and of any nation taking a war to American soil: "I believe we have awakened a sleeping giant" "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass." Here is why he was ...

Top French court upholds ban on gay marriage

French court rejects gay marriage appeal (Reuters) - France's ban on same-sex marriages was upheld by the country's constitutional authority on Friday, in a ruling that relieves the government of any obligation to grant gays the wedding rights enjoyed by heterosexuals. A handful of countries in Europe allow couples of the same sex to wed and rights campaigners had hoped for a breakthrough in France, where two women living together had demanded the view of the Constitutional Council. The Constitutional Council said it found no conflict between the law as it stands and fundamental rights enshrined by the constitution. It was up to parliament to decide whether the law should ...
