Jing Zhao Cesarone CHICAGO, March 5 (Xinhua) -- From sparkling costumes, elegant dance moves, melodic folk songs, to classic Beijing Opera, a stunning visual feast of Chinese culture dazzled many Chicagoans on Friday night at a concert sponsored by the Confucius Institute in Chicago (CIC). This speaks a lot about the locals' growing enthusiasm in learning Chinese inspired by Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to the Wind City in January. During the concert at Walter Payton College Preparatory High School which President Hu once visited, students from 42 area public schools, along with their administrators, teachers and parents, reveled together for the first time, still riding ...

To: mel; jimrob I think each person who posts should get a star by their name for donation. Hmmm? Hall of shame. Maybe that isnt such a bad idea, the more you contribute the bigger the stars or some kind of indicator as to your level of support, a little competition so to speak. Another way to recognize possible TROLLS, and another way of telling whos who. I like it. Possibly generating twice the present level of contributions. Up to the owner though. 99 posted on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 9:31:49 AM by wita

Charlie Sheen Makes Anti-Semitic Attack on 'Two and a Half' Men Creator Post Date: 2011-03-01 17:32:59 by X-15

Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen lashed out at the show's co-creator Chuck Lorre during an interview on the syndicated Alex Jones Show Thursday. Saying he was told that if he went on "attack" execs would cancel the show, Sheen repeatedly referred to the showrunner as "Chaim Levine" before going off on Lorre's vanity card last week that said "If Charlie Sheen outlives me, I'm gonna be really pissed." (Lorre's birth name is Charles Levine.) Sheen said, "I didn't care about that vanity card, I went straight home and dispelled that, that was actually one of the few compliments that clown has paid me in frickin' almost a ...

Charlie Sheen Ignites ABC-NBC News War Charlie Sheen ignited a news war over the weekend by giving ABC News an exclusive interview about his recent meltdown--only to turn around and talk to NBC News too. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC is "apoplectic" over the situation. ABC had touted its interview with Sheen as an exclusive, putting together a special edition of "20/20" that is set to air Tuesday and promising to run clips from the interview across all its news programs over a two-day period. It was, as they say, a major "get" for the network. Unfortunately for ABC, Sheen then gave an interview to NBC News on Sunday. NBC quickly trumpeted the ...

> This morning the Muslim Brotherhood warned the United States that if United States meddling in Egypt continued they intend to cut off America's supply of 7-11 and Motel 6 managers. If this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next, followed by Dell, AT&T and AOL customer service reps .. Finally, if all else fails, they have threatened not to send us any more presidents either. It's gonna get ugly, people. >

The US government is offering private intelligence companies contracts to create software to manage "fake people" on social media sites and create the illusion of consensus on controversial issues.
The contract calls for the development of "Persona Management Software" which would help the user create and manage a variety of distinct fake profiles online. The job listing was discussed in recently leaked emails from the private security firm HBGary after an attack by internet activist last week.

A Toronto police officer who told a gathering of university students that women could avoid sexual assault by not dressing like "sluts" has issued an apology. Mark Pugash, director of communications for the Toronto Police Service, said the officer would send a written letter of apology to faculty and students at York University for inappropriate comments made at the university's Osgoode Hall Law School. The officer in question sent a written apology to the school later on Thursday. Pugash said the officer had also been disciplined internally. The comments were reportedly made during a campus safety meeting on Jan. 24. Toronto Police Const. Wendy Drummond had said the ...

Get Chicago Alerts Sign UpSubmit this storydigg reddit stumble The harsh reality of the budget cuts proposed by Illinois governor Pat Quinn will become very real for tens of thousands of residents, as the state prepares to kill all funding for its drug treatment and prevention programs. Only federal Medicaid dollars will fund drug treatment centers starting March 15, meaning that services at centers statewide will face drastic cuts. Sara Howe, CEO of the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association told the News-Gazette that "80 percent of our clients on March 15 would be thrown out of care." That adds up to around 55,000 people ...

It crops up in our speech dozens of times every day, although it apparently means little. So how did the word "OK" conquer the world, asks Allan Metcalf. "OK" is one of the most frequently used and recognised words in the world. It is also one of the oddest expressions ever invented. But this oddity may in large measure account for its popularity. It's odd-looking. It's a word that looks and sounds like an abbreviation, an acronym. We generally spell it OK - the spelling okay is relatively recent, and still relatively rare - and we pronounce it not "ock" but by sounding the names of the letters O and K. Visually, OK pairs the completely round O ...

Wal-Mart's arrival in District looks like welcome advance for shopping, jobs Post Date: 2011-02-17 10:43:09 by Prefrontal Vortex

Wal-Mart's arrival in District looks like welcome advance for shopping, jobs Thursday, February 10, 2011 When politicians, agency officials and other establishment types discuss the pros and cons of Wal-Mart opening stores in poor, retail-starved neighborhoods in the District, they often talk about pretty high-minded stuff. Fair pay. Job training. Environmental safeguards. By contrast, in the scruffy blocks around the corner of New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road in Northeast Washington, where the first of four Wal-Marts planned for the District would probably be built, the residents have more immediate, street-level concerns. First, would a new Wal-Mart there really stock the same ...

China row over synchronised goldfish magic trick Post Date: 2011-02-16 07:40:29 by Tatarewicz

Chinese animal rights groups are urging TV stations not to show a magic trick of goldfish swimming in formation. They believe the performance could involve the use of magnets and therefore harm the fish. Campaigners want the act dropped from variety shows to be broadcast on Thursday to mark the end of the Chinese New Year holiday. The magician at the centre of the controversy, Fu Yandong, denies he harms the fish. The trick has amazed audiences across China, appearing on one of the biggest shows of the year, China Central Television's New Year's Eve special. Magician's code Mr Fu takes six goldfish and releases them into a shallow tank. He somehow gets them to swim ...
Breitbart facing shutdown? Post Date: 2011-02-15 02:44:40 by Tatarewicz

Former US Department of Agriculture employee Shirley Sherrod has made good on her word: she's suing conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart. Last year, he published a video of her describing to an NAACP conference how she long ago overcame her own racist attitudes. However, a video from that speech was deceptively edited to make it appear that she was describing how she used the power of the government against a white farmer. She was fired from her post within hours of the clip hitting Breitbart's website. In truth, Sherrod's story was about how she conquered her prejudice and used her power to help a family in need, and how that couple remained her friends even so many years ...
