What's the largest man-made structure in the world?
Post Date: 2010-08-31 18:06:48 by James Deffenbach

Like a lot of these categories, it depends on what you consider to be a structure, or what you mean by “largest.” The largest man-made object is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It's hard to pin down the exact size of the patch, but some estimates put it at around 550,000 square miles, or about twice the size of Texas. Currents across the Pacific Ocean drag trash from the coasts of Asia and North America to this area creating a soup of debris. Invalid YouTube video embed code The largest man-made lake will soon be the reservoir created by China's Three Gorges Dam. Although the dam's structure was completed in 2006, the reservoir is still growing. This as-yet unnamed ...

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (CN) - A man who was hurt in a car crash but was misidentified as a cancer patient claims security guards at Prince George's Hospital beat him up when he tried to leave the hospital to avoid chest surgery he didn't need - "to have a potentially cancerous mass removed from his chest." He adds that one guard repeatedly called him "bitch" as he roughed him up. Joseph Wheeler says a June 23 car accident put him in the hospital, which is owned by Dimensions Health Corporation. When he woke up hungry on June 24 and asked a nurse for food, she told him he couldn't eat because he was scheduled for surgery, Wheeler claims in Prince George's ...

No wonder he's so flippin' angry. Meet the scofflaw who allegedly owes more than $172 million to the IRS -- a broke, former Alphabet City hipster who has had to borrow money from relatives to make ends meet. Garage-band guitarist Marcos Esparza Bofill quit his floundering job as a day trader in the city after less than a year -- and left the tiny tenement apartment that he shared with roommates on East Sixth Street to move back to his native Barcelona, Spain, in hopes of having better luck with music career there, friends said. "The first thing he said to me [yesterday after learning of the tax bill] was, 'What's the IRS?' " one pal told The Post. WATCH ...

My Story - The Russian Girls of Harbin August 22, 2010 David Richards (for henrymakow.com) I spent last year teaching English in the 'Ice City' of China, Harbin, which is close to the Russian border. During my stay, I spent few social evenings in mainstream Chinese society, instead gravitating to the clubs where Westerners and Russians congregated. A frequent sight on these evenings were beautiful Russian girls, the majority of whom were studying Chinese. Many of them looked like super models, wore revealing dresses and drank heavily, raring to go! A young man's dream you might think. But the reality was much different. I found these girls to have a self-destructive ...

Poll: One out of Five Americans Do Not Believe Obama Exists ‘Existers’ Movement Gathers Steam WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) – In what might be the most serious challenge to Barack Obama’s legitimacy as President, a new poll shows that one out of five Americans are not convinced that Mr. Obama exists. The poll, conducted by the University of Minnesota’s Opinion Research Institute, reveals that 23 percent of those surveyed “strongly agreed” with the statement, “I believe that Barack Obama’s birth was faked, just like the moon landing.” The poll results coincide with the recent rise of the so-called “Exister” movement, a group ...

Portions of the Gulf are So Toxic that Dolphins, Fish, Crabs, Stingrays and Other Animals are “Trying to Crawl Out of the Water”

On Friday, Inter Press Service reported: Danny Ross, a commercial fisherman from Biloxi… said he has watched horseshoe crabs trying to crawl out of the water, and other marine life like stingrays and flounder trying to escape the water as well. He believes this is because the water is hypoxic. … David Wallis, another fisherman from Biloxi… [said] “I’ve seen crabs crawling out of the water in the middle of the day. This is going to be affecting us far into the future.” This has been a common occurrence since BP started spilling oil into the Gulf. The Post Chronicle noted on August 12th: Some local fishermen say they are seeing strange behavior by marine ...

How Has it Come to This? (GOM)

The scene is post-apocalyptic. Under a grey sky, two families play in the surf just off the beach in Grand Isle, Louisiana. To get to the beach, we walk past a red, plastic barrier fence that until very recently was there to keep people away from the oil-soaked area. Now, there are a few openings that beach goers can use. The fence is left largely intact, I presume, for when they will need to close the beach again when the next invasion of BP’s oil occurs. A father jokingly throws sand at his little boy who laughs while dodging it. This, against a background of oil rigs and platforms looming in the Gulf. In the foreground, littering the beach, are tar balls. We stroll through the ...

The financial wit and wisdom of Zsa Zsa Gabor

Hungarian actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, who has asked for a priest to administer the last rites, may not have looked like a feminist but had robust views about how women should stand up for themselves financially. Zsa Zsa, 93, married nine times – mostly to very wealthy men – and distilled her wit and wisdom into memorable one-liners. For example, she once said: “I learned in school that money isn’t everything. It’s happiness that counts. So Momma sent me to a different school.” Long before comedian Caroline Ahern, in character as Mrs Merton, asked Debbie McGee: “So, Debbie, what attracted first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?”, Mrs Gabor ...
