Worries about the stock market are leading some Americans to look outside U.S. borders for inexpensive places to retire. In many cases, retiring abroad offers the added draw of warmer weather, a lower cost of living and a slower pace of life. Whether it's South America, Europe or Southeast Asia, a number of destinations offer Americans the ability to stretch their dollars and still live the dolce vita. Massive Flow Of Bullshit Continues To Gush From BP Headquarters June 7, 2010 | ISSUE 46•23 LONDON—As the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico entered its eighth week Wednesday, fears continued to grow that the massive flow of bullshit still gushing from the headquarters of oil giant BP could prove catastrophic if nothing is done to contain it. The toxic bullshit, which began to spew from the mouths of BP executives shortly after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in April, has completely devastated the Gulf region, delaying cleanup efforts, affecting thousands of jobs, and endangering the lives of all nearby wildlife. "Everything we can see at the moment suggests that ...

Lost Youth Employment in Illinois - by Stephen Lendman What affects Illinois plagues the nation, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting in January that: "The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2% - a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept - meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time." "The number represents the flip-side to the Labor Dept's report that the employment rate of 16-to-24 year olds has ...

Illinois: A State in Crisis

Illinois: A State in Crisis - by Stephen Lendman This writer's earlier articles addressed greater social misery in America than since the Great Depression, because of unemployment, homelessness, hunger, bankruptcies, despair, and rising poverty levels. According to the National Academy of Science, 47.4 million Americans were impoverished in 2008, 15% of the population, but the true number is much higher since the government's income threshold is $22,000 for a family of four, way short of what's needed throughout urban America where even half again as much is too little. Illinois is a microcosm of the nation. Facing the largest per capital budget deficit in America, equal to ...

10 Things You Need (But Don't Want) To Know About the BP Oil Spill How the owner of the exploded oil rig has made $270 million off the disaster, and nine other shocking, depressing facts about the oil spill. May 27, 2010 | It's been 37 days since BP's offshore oil rig, Deepwater Horizon, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. Since then, crude oil has been hemorrhaging into ocean waters and wreaking unknown havoc on our ecosystem -- unknown because there is no accurate estimate of how many barrels of oil are contaminating the Gulf. Though BP officially admits to only a few thousand barrels spilled each day, expert estimates peg the damage at 60,000 barrels or over 2.5 million ...

Recent Server Outages Explained
Post Date: 2010-05-29 04:54:39 by Pinguinite

Over the past day and a half there have been a couple outages, and further, the site has been up and down without warning as I've been working on it. I suspect at this point it was due to the database getting a bit too messy causing the server to spend a lot more time than needed to work it, and that extra time got to be too much for it. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. For now. But the DB has been cleaned up so if my theory is correct, the problem should be resolved now and we should now resume with good service. If my theory is wrong, then I expect we'll see more outages in the coming few days. Thanks for you patience.

Police in Alaska puzzled by 26 headless chickens Wed May 26, 1:41 PM EDT FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Alaska State Troopers are puzzled by a gruesome discovery in the city of North Pole: 26 headless chickens carefully arranged at a coop. Police say the fly-infested carcasses found Monday were arranged in a 12- to 15-foot-long line pattern that ended in a circle. There was no sign of the missing heads. Three chickens were left unharmed, and there was no damage to the coop. Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters says officers "have no idea what the thought process was." They say there's a possibility that the killings were intended as a threat. Those responsible could be charged ...

If you're ever lucky enough to be in Afghanistan, Gunnery Sgt. Benjamin Lepping’s left butt cheek has a special surprise. Sarah Palin. Or, as Lepping puts it, "the hottest cougar in the Republican Party." News of Lepping's Palin tattoo -- which displays her trademark glasses and smiling mug -- has apparently been making the rounds in Lepping's ranks overseas, and appeared online at the Military Times website on Thursday. The Times' headline was, "Marine’s cheeky Sarah Palin tattoo the butt of jokes." "When I came to Afghanistan, I expected to find many strange and unusual sights," the paper's reporter penned. "A gunnery ...

Once considered a "conspiracy" theory, the secretive story of the Council on Foreign Relations, Trilateral Commission and Bilderbergs – tycoons worth more than the combined wealth of all Americans – will be told in public before the European Parliament. Author Daniel Estulin, whose work "The True Story of the Bilderberg Group" has sold millions of copies, has been invited to present an unprecedented speech before the European Parliament in Brussels June 1 on the subject of the secretive cabal. "This is an opportunity to bring Bilderberg into the mainstream," Estulin said. "A subject that was once considered to be in the domain of conspiracy ...

The leak is still, well, leaking. There is 30+ days more of this type and volume of oil behind this. 60 miles, at last check, of the most productive deltaic region in the world are fouled. Much of this area is mangrove cane marshes, and cannot be feasibly 'cleaned.' It is unknown how badly this will effect the wildlife, but it is enough to shut down production within Barataria bay, the largest single fisheries area in the state of louisiana. Entire communities, dependent on these areas for the baseline of their economies, will be summarily affected. Said communities generally encompass the houma-thibideaux and greater new orleans metro areas. Imagine the midwest without farming. ...
