Girl Scout Politics Less Than Sweet

Girl Scout Politics Less Than Sweet Kathryn Lopez Friday, March 12, 2010 I've seen more than a few boxes of Do-Si-Dos and Samoas around lately. It's hard to look askance at the Girl Scouts when there's so much sweetness in the air. But there is reason for keeping the Girl Scouts out of the "mom and apple pie" category. For one thing, the organization has a think tank, a nongovernmental organization and a welcome mat out to Planned Parenthood. At a meeting of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women this month, the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides held a session for young people in which the International Planned Parenthood Federation ...

Don't breathe on it: Architect spends 44 days creating world's biggest house of cards An American architect has broken his own Guinness World Record by building the largest house of free-standing playing cards. Bryan Berg used 218,792 cards to create a replica of the Venetian Macau, which is on display in its namesake luxury hotel and casino. Berg took 44 days and 4,051 decks of cards to complete his model inside the Venetian, which sits at the heart of Macau's Cotai Strip, the China-ruled city's version of Las Vegas' neon alley.US 'cardstacker' Bryan Berg poses for photographers after successfully making a new Guinness World Record for the largest house of ...

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Pro Football Hall of Famer and former television actor Merlin Olsen has died. He was 69. Utah State University assistant athletic media relations director Zach Fisher says Olsen died Wednesday night. Olsen was an All-American at Utah State and a first-round draft pick of the Los Angles Rams in 1962. He was part of the Rams' ''Fearsome Foursome'' defensive line, which set an NFL record for the fewest yards allowed during a 14-game season in 1968. Olsen is still the Rams' all-time leader in career tackles with 915. Olsen moved on to acting with roles in ''Little House on the Prairie'' and later his own series, ...

Lytle Park rapist found guilty

Lytle Park rapist found guilty By Kimball Perry Miciah Black used his cunning to lure three females into situations where they couldn't escape. Then he raped each of them, a Hamilton County judge ruled Tuesday. Black, dubbed the Lytle Park rapist because one of his victims was raped at 9 a.m. in the Downtown public park, became a poster child for those calling for a new jail. Before the May 4 incident was reported, Black had been arrested five times in the previous six months but released each time because there was no room in the jail for him. Common Pleas Court Judge Melba Marsh, hearing the trial without a jury, convicted Black of 19 of the 20 counts against him Tuesday. ...

How I found God and peace with my atheist brother: PETER HITCHENS traces his journey back to Christianity By Peter Hitchens During his teenage years and early 20s, Peter Hitchens lost his faith and rebelled against everything he had been brought up to believe in. Here, in a moving and thought-provoking account from his controversial new book, he describes his spiritual journey back to God - and the end of his feud with his brother I set fire to my Bible on the playing fields of my Cambridge boarding school one bright, windy spring afternoon in 1967. I was 15 years old. The book did not, as I had hoped, blaze fiercely and swiftly. Only after much blowing and encouragement did I manage to ...

Houseguest Just Going To Lie There Until Rest Of House Wakes Up Anticipating at least a two-hour wait for breakfast, Keegan rationed what was left of his Terra Blues chips from the previous day's flight. SAN DIEGO—Houseguest Kevin Keegan announced Sunday morning that, despite being totally awake, he nonetheless intends to remain on the living room couch he slept on last night until one or more of the house's occupants gets up. Keegan, a Boston resident staying with his cousin Barbara's family while in California for a job interview, said that he awoke at the unusually early hour of 6:45 a.m. "probably because of the time zone difference" and had failed in his ...

So I decided to have a shower and walk into town. I get into town and there's really noone interesting around and not really anything happening so I stopped at the library to use the free computer. Conservationists unveil plans to restore bison to North American plains

Bison, the iconic animal of the American west, could once more roam wild across the great plains under a recovery roadmap prepared by international scientists. A report by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) (pdf), prepared by dozens of scientists and bison experts from Mexico, America, and Canada, says there is a chance of a second recovery, nearly a century after the animals were rescued from the brink of extinction. But success depends on allowing large herds to roam free over thousands or perhaps millions of hectares, an overhaul of government regulations, and a rethink of public attitudes to the animal. Currently, there is only one population of plains ...

TooConservative claims that "Nearly all of the Truthers were originally Dim liberals" [Full Thread]

#8. To: Gatlin (#6) One article described Bedell as an "obsessed libertarian" ... but neglected to say what was meant by "obsessed." Nearly all of the Truthers were originally Dim liberals and Bush-haters. Not dissimilar to the IRS plane-bomber. They then tried to use Ron Paul's campaign as their own political vehicle even though they had little success in recruiting the RP folk to their cause. This is when some of them started calling themselves libertarians. They have persisted in this long after Ron Paul repudiated Trutherism across the board. You can see why I keep saying that the Tea Parties need to repel boarders (Birchers, Birthers, Truthers, etc.) who ...

THE STRANGE DEATH OF COLONEL SABOW

The official version of the colonel's death just doesn't add up. So his brother is left asking a number of questions: What happened? Is it possible that elements of every major department of government could have been involved in either incompetence or intentional malfeasance, including a coordinated coverup? And if the latter is the case, what could have been the motive? On the morning of January 22, 1991, neurologist Dr. David Sabow received a telephone call while he was at work in his office. The call was one that would change his life forever, and change his outlook on the integrity of parts of this country's military and political systems. It was from a Marine Corps ...

To: ohioWfan “Noobs going around screaming that proven conservatives are “liberals” when they’ve never lifted a finger to elect a conservative in their little lives.” I realize I shouldn’t take your pingless bait, but: “Proven conservatives” don’t gush over liberals and don’t get emotionally invested in a politician to the degree that they can’t stand any criticism of that politician’s policies and view it as a personal attack. Bush was a liberal President. Yes, Obama is worse. Yes, Kerry would’ve been worse. So would Gore. That we have such a rogue’s gallery running or winning the office does NOT mean Bush was a ...

FBI Operative Hal Turner Says Government Urged Him to Make Violent Statements

Hal Turner took the stand today in his federal trial and accused the FBI of instructing him to make violent and racist statements. The North Bergen, New Jersey, radio talk show host is on trial for allegedly threatening three Chicago-based federal appeals court judges. In June of 2009, Turner said the judges “deserved to be killed” for a ruling they made in a gun control case. In more than two hours of testimony, Turner described how he was recruited in 2003 by the FBI’s Newark-based Joint Terrorism Task Force. He said he was paid “in excess of $100,000” by the FBI during his almost five years as an informant, according to The Record. Turner’s first trial ...
