From Roy Blount's Book of Southern Humor You know befo' surrender Ole Massa had a nigger named John and John always prayed every night befo' he went to bed and his prayer was for God to come git him and take him to Heaven right away. He didn't even want to take time to die. He wanted de Lawd to come git him just like he was--boot, sock and all. He'd git down on his knees and say: "O Lawd, it's once more and again yo' humble servant is knee bent and body-bowed--my heart beneath my knees and my knees in some lonesome valley, crying for mercy while mercy kin be found. O Lawd, Ah'm astin' you in de humblest way I know how to be so pleased as to come in ...

How many of you would receive nearly 300 cards and a load of cash when people learned you were sick? Aw, dont feel bad. Youre not an ornery, smelly old donkey. On Tuesday, The Kansas City Star published a story about Ebenezer, a 30-year-old beast of very little burden that is ailing from bad teeth and white line disease on his hooves. Since then, get-well missives accompanied by more than $5,000 have arrived at Equine Health Solutions, a Raymore veterinary clinic. Somebody sent a dollar. A man put $1,000 on his credit card. Ebenezer, famous for being the friendly donkey by the road, arrived Thursday. Friends can monitor his progress on the clinics Facebook page. ...

(The following diary was found recently among the archives of Bugtussle County, Virginia by a scholar researching the history of our current President. Although damaged, faded and fragmentary in nature, the journal gives us a unique opportunity to share the experiences of an early settler on the Virginia frontier at the time of the American Revolution. Work is continuing on the restoration of this rare document, and it is hoped that further chapters shall be forthcoming.) Bugtussle County, Va. August 19, 1778 Having come now into my 22nd Yeare, this being the anniversary of my Birth, I, with my boon Companions, Jeremiah Hubbell and Obadiah McDougal, didst adjourn to ye local Taverne, ...

The Cold Within Six humans trapped by happenstance in dark and bitter cold Each one possessed a stick of wood or so the story's told. Their dying fire in need of logs one woman held hers back For on the faces around the fire she noticed one was black. The next one looking across the way saw one not of his church And couldn't bring himself to give the fire his stick of birch. The third one sat in tattered clothes and gave his coat a hitch-- "Why should my log be used to aid the idle rich?" The rich man just sat back and thought of the wealth he had in store And how to keep what he had earned from the lazy, shiftless poor. The black man's face bespoke revenge as ...

Take Me to Your Leader: Is Sarah Palin the Future Tea Partier in Chief? Posted Feb 03, 2010 10:30am EST by Peter Gorenstein in Recession, Election, Politics Related: nws, twx, spy, dia, ^dji, ^gspc Less than a year after its creation, the Tea Party movement hits the big time Thursday when it kicks off its first National Tea Party Convention to be held in Nashville, Tennessee. "It does represent the first attempt to bring it closer into the Republican fold," says Ben McGrath, a New Yorker staff writer who recently authored a story on the grassroots movement. It also may be a sign the honeymoon is over. The convention has been mired by infighting on everything from the price of ...

WW II - Little Known History You might enjoy this from Col D. G. Swinford, USMC, Ret and history buff. You would really have to dig deep to get this kind of ringside seat to history: 1. The first German serviceman killed in WW II was killed by the Japanese (China, 1937), the first American serviceman killed was killed by the Russians (Finland 1940); highest ranking American killed was Lt Gen Lesley McNair, killed by the US Army Air Corps. So much for allies. 2. The youngest US serviceman was 12 year old Calvin Graham, USN. He was wounded and given a Dishonorable Discharge for lying about his age. His benefits were later restored by act of Congress. 3.. At the time of Pearl Harbor, the ...

A car door slams, and Ebenezer begins shambling toward the sound. His hooves hurt so he moves slowly along the pasture path. Hes also about 30 years old, and thats getting up there for a donkey. Snow is starting to blow, but that car just might mean its supper time. He cant graze anymore because of bad teeth, so supper time is pretty important. Hey, Buddy, calls Shirley Phillips, spotting him though the trees Monday evening. Since September, Phillips has been stopping by at dawn and dusk to feed and water the old donkey that, according to his owner, has more friends than he does. For more than a quarter century, people have pulled to the side of the ...

Jassy punched, kicked and ran over Osnes in a driver-vs.-pedestrian confrontation in a Hollywood intersection. By Harriet Ryan February 2, 2010 A Los Angeles County jury convicted a Swedish hip-hop artist of second-degree murder Monday in a road rage killing whose suddenness and diverse cast earned comparison to the movie "Crash." The panel in Superior Court rejected a claim by David Moses Jassy, a 35-year-old rapper and songwriter from Stockholm, that he had been acting in self-defense during a late-night confrontation with a pedestrian near ...

Cat predicts 50 deaths in RI nursing home Post Date: 2010-02-02 02:14:00 by Horse

A cat with an uncanny ability to detect when nursing home patients are about to die has proven itself in around 50 cases by curling up with them in their final hours, according to a new book. Dr David Dosa, a geriatrician and assistant professor at Brown University, said that five years of records showed Oscar rarely erring, sometimes proving medical staff at the New England nursing home wrong in their predictions over which patients were close to death. The cat, now five and generally unsociable, was adopted as a kitten at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Providence, Rhode Island, which specialises in caring for people with severe dementia. Dr Dosa first publicised ...

In Shackles, Rip Torn Appears In Court By CHRISTINE DEMPSEY Actor and comedian Elmore "Rip" Torn made his first, brief appearance in Superior Court in Bantam this morning after his arrest on gun and burglary charges Friday night. Shortly before 10:20 a.m., he slowly walked into the courtroom with shackled legs. He was chained to three other prisoners. The four sat on a wooden bench while a court staff member read them their rights. He was wearing cowboy boots, black pants, a blue, plaid shirt, and a Navy blue jacket. Minutes later, he and the other three walked back to the holding area. His arraignment is expected to take place before the lunch break at 1 p.m. Torn was ...

After Three Months, Only 35 Subscriptions for Newsday's Web Site Post Date: 2010-01-26 15:35:47 by Jethro Tull

In late October, Newsday, the Long Island daily that the Dolans bought for $650 million, put its web site, newsday.com, behind a pay wall. The paper was one of the first non-business newspapers to take the plunge by putting up a pay wall, so in media circles it has been followed with interest. Could its fate be a sign of what others, including The New York Times, might expect?
So, three months later, how many people have signed up to pay $5 a week, or $260 a year, to get unfettered access to newsday.com?
The answer: 35 people. As in fewer than three dozen. As in a decent-sized elementary-school class.
That astoundingly low figure was revealed in a newsroom-wide meeting last week by ...
