On Christmas Eve, I had to stop by the Pharmacy to pick up some last minute things for X-Mas. On my way home I was tired and hungry, and didn't feel like cooking. So, I thought I would grab a bite to eat before returning home. I drove to down town Fort Wayne to see if any place would be open... Wendy's, Arby's, Tacobell, Ralley's, Subway, Burger King, all had their banner lights shut off. But McDonalds!!! Yeah! They have all of their lights on!!! I pulled around to the drive-through, and it was even lit up. I waited. And, I waited... Setting there burning up gas in a big 4 wheel drive pick-up. And I waited... HOW RUDE MALLACED AND DECIEVING ! ! ! If they are going to ...

"Dave, stop. Stop, will you? Stop, Dave. Will you stop, Dave?” So the supercomputer HAL pleads with the implacable astronaut Dave Bowman in a famous and weirdly poignant scene toward the end of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Bowman, having nearly been sent to a deep-space death by the malfunctioning machine, is calmly, coldly disconnecting the memory circuits that control its artificial “ brain. “Dave, my mind is going,” HAL says, forlornly. “I can feel it. I can feel it.” I can feel it, too. Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural ...

Coping: With Losing a Friend (George Ure on the loss of his friend, Al Auger, professional soldier and one of the original SPs)

Coping: With Losing a Friend When Elaine and I moved from the luxury (and urban conveniences) or Boca Raton to a little 13-acres hunk of land here in East Texas, we got seriously lucky. Al and Geri Auger lived across the road from us raising rabbits and more recently goats. Fine people - none better. Al was a professional soldier and one of the originals in Special Forces. As I understand it, he had the only SF unit back in the days of the Vietnam war that was called "the Auger unit". Since then, SF units have been named after states. He shared a number of insights into that conflict including the adventure of walking out of a country that the US 'wasn't in'. Then there was ...

Jon Stewart Gets Fed Up. Dems Set The Bar So Low, They're Tripping Over It (Video)

Jon Stewart took on the race for Ted Kennedy's Senate seat last night, taking jabs at the Democrats in the process. Upon hearing that Republican candidate Scott Brown was leading the polls, Stewart was dumbfounded that the Kennedy legacy could be lost to "a naked guy who owns a truck." Confounding him even more were the actions of Democratic candidate Martha Coakley, who has made a series of gaffs in her campaign and few attempts to be likable. After running the down the series of insults she's made to Boston, Stewart jokingly added: "Coakley went into the bar in 'Cheers,' and didn't know anybody's name." But what irked Stewart the most was the mindset among Democrats that if they ...

As many of you know, a couple of years ago I sold my chain of medical equipment and supply stores and returned to college. While I attend a university, this semester I decided to do some tutoring at a local community college. I've been tutoring there for a week now and I am shocked by the number of young men and women I am seeing in wheelchairs. I have counted twenty so far. Most of them appear to be casualties from the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. I say this because almost all of them use their military rucksacks as their book bags. Now that I think about it, there are quite a few young people in wheelchairs at the university as well. I guess it didn't stand out as much though because ...

Let Us All Now Bail Out the States?

Let Us All Now Bail Out the States? Ross Mackenzie Thursday, January 14, 2010 The foremost dictum of arguably the 20th Century's foremost economist holds, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Nobel economist Milton Friedman meant that somewhere along the line somebody pays for everything. Government and pols tend to resist Friedman's dictum; the feds treat it with particular disdain. But right now the states are confronting it -- bigtime. Most states must balance their budgets by constitutional stipulation -- a concept also viewed with a federal sneer. In the depression year of 2009, the feds bailed out the states to the tune of $87 billion. In the current fiscal ...

Let’s say you’re filming the next Top Gun, and you need an aircraft to represent the frontline fighters currently in use by potential adversaries. Or maybe you’re joining the space tourism industry, and you need a chase aircraft for your space vehicle test flights. In either application you’ll need an aircraft that has exceptional maneuverability and speed as well as records for rate of climb and altitude. You need a Sukhoi Su-27, and there are two for sale. They call it “the Su” around Pride Aircraft Inc. in Rockford, Illinois, where two Sukhoi Su-27UB “Flanker-C” models are being made available for civilian ownership. This frontline Soviet fighter ...

January 8, 2010. We've all heard about shortages on ammunition. Some credit the shortage to an increase in domestic demand sparked by hysteria over the election of a Democratic president, who some believe will attempt to ban or restrict ammunition sales. A more likely reason is the impact of the two wars we're fighting, which create a demand for about 1.5 billion rounds of ammunition per year -- ammunition is being produced in huge quantities in the US, but it's ending up in Baghdad instead of Cabela's. Whatever the causes, the shortages are real and they can screw up your plans. Here's some numbers on ammo that I have on backorder with Midway USA. Note that none of ...

Bookie refuses to pay out $11 million on snow bet LONDON (Reuters) - Bookmaker Ladbrokes is refusing to pay out more than 7 million pounds ($11 million) to a man who gambled on a white Christmas across the UK, as the bet was accepted by mistake. Cliff Bryant, 52, had placed two 5-pound accumulator bets that snow would fall on 24 towns and cities across the north of England on Christmas Day. "We have apologized to the customer for any confusion and for mistakenly accepting an accumulator bet when our own rules state that only single bets are available on a market of this nature," said a Ladbrokes spokesman. "We are happy to void the bets and to pay the customer his ...

Police: Child's DNA proves statutory rape Tony Di Domizio LANSDALE — A 34-year-old former Lansdale man has been charged with statutory rape after police determined he fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl. Police said Dennis T. Liles, formerly of the 100 block of East Main Street, remains incarcerated in isolation at Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $250,000 cash bail stemming from another rape that occurred Jan. 8, 2009. Police had to wait for the child to be born to obtain DNA samples to determine that Liles had in fact fathered the child, police said. The child, a girl, was born in August, police said.
