Looking For Another Ascent to the Shining City on the Hill Matt Towery Thursday, December 31, 2009 Am I glad this past the decade has ended! I remember New Year's Eve of 2000 because I was working on a television retrospective of the 20th century. Had I known what lay ahead, I would have skipped that project and instead crawled under the set and assumed the fetal position. Where to start with the last decade? George W. Bush won the White House in a chaotically contested electoral vote, only to preside over America when terrorists attacked the following year. The dot-com economy crumbled, and then the very financial underpinnings of our nation were corroded by the actions of then-Fed ...

Alleged? And over 200 years ago? Forgetting about all you find wrong with the Civil Rights movement for a moment, let me just ask you this... do you think slavery, segregation, and racial discrimination against blacks was right or wrong? Just try to answer that question independently. meguro posted on 2009-12-30 19:51:57 ET Reply Trace

The reason you should answer yes is that covers it no matter which one you think. Kinda like an old lady I used to work for who would get snockered/stewed to ...

Harry Reid: Taxes are voluntary in America Post Date: 2009-12-29 11:14:44 by christine

From a perspective of legal speak Sen. Harry Reid adamantly defends the proposition that the US income tax system is a completely voluntary tax system solely because in many nations (most of them totalitarian) the tax collectors take their share of your wages as you earn them, not when you are paid. What makes the US system voluntary is that US taxpayers are allowed to compute their own tax debt based on their earnings. But, thats as far as voluntary goes. Uncle Sam doesnt ask you if you want to pay taxes
they only tell you how much jail time you will get if you dont. I guess in Reids perspective, you can voluntarily pay your taxes or ...

I just got off the phone with Michael Badnariks Mother, Elaine. She informed me that his condition seems to have backslid. They were were hoping that he would have been released on Wednesday to his Mothers care in Indiana but his condition is still critical. Michael came out of his unconscious state, unbound his wrists some how, and removed the breathing tube from his throat. His mother remarked that when Michael came to he asked to be released. He doesnt understand how serious his situation is. The hospital had to sedate him again to put the breathing tube back in because he is having trouble breathing. They cannot find the reason for his breathing ...

Thank You to These Businesses and Products Dennis Prager Tuesday, December 29, 2009 Since I began radio broadcasting 27 years ago, I have tried to come up with ideas for New Year's resolutions for myself and my listeners. Virtually each time, I have advocated one resolution in particular: For every couple of letters of complaint or oral complaints we communicate about someone or about some company, we should write a letter or make a call to commend someone or some company. Did you complain about an airline or about a flight attendant in the past year? No problem. But if you have never cited an airline or a flight attendant for stellar performance, that is a problem. We have all ...

In 2009, Global Freedom Had Few Blooms Post Date: 2009-12-27 13:09:00 by Eric Stratton

In 2009, Global Freedom Had Few Blooms Steve Chapman Sunday, December 27, 2009 This year marked the 20th anniversary of the blossoming of democracy around the world, stimulated in part by the fall of the Berlin Wall on Nov. 9, 1989. Far from producing much new growth, however, 2009 brought to mind an old folk song: Where have all the flowers gone? Not to China, which had an anniversary of its own -- the 20th since Chinese students occupied Tiananmen Square in an inspiring call for democracy and liberty, only to be crushed by the army. Looking back, Beijing shows no remorse. In fact, Human Rights Watch said in May, it "continues to victimize survivors, victims' families, and ...

It's now being reported that Charlie Sheen's third wife Brooke Mueller was legally drunk when she called 911 on her husband on Christmas morning. And that choking allegation? She's told police that it's bogus. TMZ's sources say cops gave both Charlie and Brooke blood alcohol tests. Brooke was .13 while Charlie registered .04. How is that even possible? The legal limit is .08 for a first driving offense in Colorado so thank heavens she wasn't behind the wheel of a Range Rover.

Of Christmas, War and Peace Post Date: 2009-12-25 21:26:37 by Eric Stratton

Of Christmas, War and Peace Pat Buchanan Friday, December 25, 2009 "And this shall be a sign unto you: You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger. "And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God, and saying: Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace to men of good will." Here the argument begins. Is it biblical to say, "Peace on earth and good will to men," which is inclusive but inexact? Or does that dilute and distort the meaning of "Peace on earth to men of good will," which is restrictive? The former, while ecumenical, seems pacifist. Do we wish good will today to ...

Today the server went down after hundreds of requests came in for various pages within about 38 seconds. The offending IP address is already known on the net as a "comment spammer" though it cannot actually post here. Apache (the web serving program) already has settings to limit the number of requests it will try to service at one time, and today I've reduced that from 150 to 50. I'm not sure exactly what the optimal setting should be, but if it's too low I'll see warnings about the limit being hit. 150 apparently is never hit. If it is too low then the worst case scenario is a bit slower response time during peak activity. In time I should find the optimal ...
