`You hit a what?' SUV nearly slams into elephant By SEAN MURPHY, AP 35 minutes ago OKLAHOMA CITY It's not unusual to see a deer or a cow crossing Oklahoma's rural highways. But an elephant? A couple driving home from church nearly slammed into a giant pachyderm that had escaped from a nearby circus late Wednesday. "Didn't have time to hit the brakes. The elephant blended in with the road," driver Bill Carpenter said Thursday. "At the very last second I said 'elephant!'" Carpenter, 68, said he swerved his SUV at the last second and ended up sideswiping the 29-year-old female elephant on U.S. 81 in Enid, about 80 miles north of Oklahoma ...

Town makes it illegal to own more than 3 cats DUDLEY, Mass. It's now illegal in one Massachusetts town to own more than three cats without getting a special license. Voters at a town meeting in Dudley on Monday night added language to a town bylaw that makes it illegal to own more than three cats without a $50 residential kennel license. Dudley is about 60 miles southwest of Boston. The article was in response to a neighborhood feud over the 15 cats owned by Mary Ellen Richards. The Telegram & Gazette of Worcester reports that one neighbor claimed the cats have ruined his yard. Richards has put her home up for sale and says she plans to move to a "more cat-friendly ...

Jewish Patrol Assault Trial "Close to Farce"; Messiah to Be Called as Witness By Roy Edroso in Featured, Legal, Religion The Flatbush Shomrim -- a safety patrol of observant Jews -- has been on fire lately. Last week they caught a graffiti artist and a car-breaker, and yesterday they took down a burglar. The Crown Heights Shomrim, meanwhile, has been much busier in court, with six of its members charged with beating up some students after they responded to a yeshiva brawl on Eastern Parkway two years ago, allegedly over a dormitory bed. The trial started yesterday and "veered close to farce," says the Daily News, with heckling from spectators and "six defense ...

THUGOCRACY "It appears that this era of 'hope and change' was code for replacing professionalism and respect with scare tactics and threats." Columnist Bobby Eberle REPRESSIVE TAXATION "An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy; because there is a limit beyond which no institution and no property can bear taxation." John Marshall, Supreme Court Justice, 1801-1835 LIBERAL INDOCTRINATION "Government's real motives and rationale are quite simple, through rarely, if ever stated. JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Jewish Holocaust survivors are at a higher risk for cancer, a study found. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Haifa and published online Monday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, compared the cancer rates of more than 300,000 European-born Jews who immigrated to Israel before or during World War II and those who immigrated after World War II until 1989. Both groups have higher rates of cancer than other Jewish and non-Jewish groups in Israel. Exposure to the Holocaust was found to increase, by at least 17 percent, the risk of contracting all kinds of cancers in both sexes -- the strongest risks were for breast, lung and colorectal ...
The landladys tale(read in the dark) Post Date: 2009-10-31 14:55:47 by freepatriot32

The following story was told to me by the woman who rented my parents their first home in California when they moved to Sacramento in 1939. A devout Catholic (so much so that although she had been divorced by her husband, she did not consider the divorce valid and did not remarry until her husband died many years later) the landlady swore on her Bible, in front of my sister and me after she told us the story, that it was absolutely true. She was quite serious about it. In the 1970s, I personally confirmed some of the more mundane parts of her story. The events she described occurring in the 1950s had been reported in the local news, and although there was now an empty lot where it and a ...

I think I've traced the few outages in recent weeks to a delay on the server when posting new articles. The problem is that when previewing an article, the server was taking a very long time to search for duplicate/similar article postings within the last 2 weeks. I think this was not a problem on the old server but the new server the site was xferred to about a month ago, it apparently was a problem. The cause is probably due to some difference is configuration, but I've made a software change on it which speeds it up dramatically (makes it work as fast as it should work). Those of you who post lots of articles will likely notice an substantial improvement. Please let me know of ...

Former Mint Director Jay W. Johnson died of a heart attack Oct. 17 at his home in suburban Washington, D.C., at the age of 66. He served as head of the nation's coinage factories for just a brief time in 2000-2001, but it was during this period when the working mints were running three shifts a day to keep up with soaring national coin demand due in part to a strong economy and to a overwhelming popularity of the state quarter program, which had begun in 1999. Johnson became a familiar figure at the nation's coin shows both during and after his tenure. In a message to Mint employees, Mint Director Ed Moy said, "Jay presided over the United States Mint during a peak period ...

The memoir -- currently titled Coming Clean -- is said to hit bookstores in Spring, 2011. Cher opened up to People magazine in June regarding Chaz's decision, saying, "Chaz is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support. [Note: This has been around the net it seems like forever, but it is timeless. The analogy of course is dependence upon the government with the price being your freedom. Is a "Tax Cut" for you gonna catch your kids? Someone will have to pay the piper, and if you think Government will stop spending, remember we are in an escalating War, right now.] The Wild and Free Pigs of the Okefenokee Swamp Some years ago, about 1900, an old trapper from North Dakota hitched up some horses to his Studebaker wagon, packed a few possessions -- especially his traps -- and drove south. Several weeks later he stopped in a small town just north of the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia. It was a ...

LP's Big Government "conservatives" decry removing government from marraige Post Date: 2009-10-23 08:22:56 by F.A. Hayek Fan

What a difference a president makes. Prior to Yomama taking office, members of LP were wanting the government to remove themselves from sanctifying marriage so that the government wouldn't sanction gay marriage. There were pages and pages of posts on these threads, all talking about how marriage was between man and God and the government shouldn't have anything to do with it. Now that one of Obama's "czar's" is talking about this same thing, the world is going to come to an end and statist's are beside themselves. One self-professed preacher, Bob Celeste, is even quoting the Bible as proof of how evil this is. The cognitive dissonance of these idiot's is ...

Moby Deer: Hunter's obsessive, three-year pursuit of huge buck pays off (350 lbs!!!) Post Date: 2009-10-21 23:44:03 by X-15

Some people are obsessed with deer hunting. Michael Versland of Hastings was obsessed with a single buck. Starting in 2007, after finding some enormous shed antlers, Versland began pursuing with bow and arrow a giant whitetail buck roaming the woods of southeastern Washington County. The high school biology teacher saw the buck twice in 2007 and once in 2008 but never got a good shot. Over three years, he was able to collect all or some of its shed antlers going back to 2005. He collected a handful of pictures of the deer from his trail camera. This year, Versland, 33, bought and practiced with a new, fully outfitted $1,700 bow and arrows, hoping that if buck came by, he would make the ...

NEW YORK Fallen financier Bernard Madoff has plunged from his Manhattan penthouse to the lower bunk of a cell he shares with a drug offender at a federal prison, where he eats pizza cooked by a child molester and hangs around with a mob boss and a convicted spy, according to legal papers filed Tuesday. The snapshot of Madoff's prison life and a contrasting picture of a former high-flying life laced with cocaine and salacious parties are in a legal complaint filed by Burlingame, Calif.-based lawyer Joseph Cotchett, who represents about a dozen victims of Madoff's massive investment Ponzi scheme. Cotchett interviewed Madoff in July at the Butner Federal ...
