Russian commission to guard against false history Post Date: 2009-05-19 08:15:54 by Disgusted

The president of Russia created a commission Tuesday to fight what he says are efforts to falsify Russian history _ part of a campaign to promote the Kremlin's account and to curtail, and possibly punish, those who question it. Russia's relations with some of its former Eastern bloc allies have suffered due to ongoing disputes over the facts of the past century. Russian leaders tend to cast the Soviet Union as a force for good that defeated Nazi Germany and liberated Eastern Europe. Critics say such arguments gloss over the decades of postwar Soviet dominance seen by many the region as a hostile occupation. President Dmitry Medvedev earlier this month warned against questioning ...

Utah school forces student to change out of kilt WEST HAVEN, Utah The principal of a Utah middle school has been asked to apologize for forcing a kilt-wearing student to change his clothes. Weber School District spokesman Nate Taggart says Craig Jessop has been asked to extend an apology to 14-year-old student Gavin McFarland of Hooper after the school official's comments Wednesday. Gavin says he wore the kilt twice in the past two weeks to Rocky Mountain Junior High as a prop for an art project. Jessop told the boy that the outfit could be misconstrued as cross-dressing. Taggart says the district recognizes the kilt as an expression of the boy's Scottish heritage and ...

WARREN, Mich. (AP) -- Police responding to a 911 caller reporting a cougar on the prowl in a suburban Detroit park saw what looked like the big cat hiding in a discarded section of cement drain pipe. So Warren police on Monday shot a Taser electroshock weapon - hitting what turned out to be a large toy cougar right in the stuffing. The Detroit Free Press reports the toy apparently was placed in the pipe as a hoax. About 10 officers responded to Bates Park. The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports the caller said it was a 150-pound cat. Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer says the department is "out there to keep the community safe." This week's incident took place ...

BRONX (WABC) -- In the dog eat dog world of New York City rush hour driving, throw in an actual dog, two, really, and you have quite a tie-up. Just before 6:30 a.m., a 9-year-old female yellow lab chow mix ran onto the Major Deegan Expressway and was hit by a car at exit 3. That's when another dog, her son, ran to the rescue, right there on the busy highway. The dog wouldn't let anyone near, barking at traffic and police officers, even as they tried to help. At one point, police tried to coax the dog into a cruiser, and they got an earful. The Deegan, normally buzzing at that hour, was slowed to a trickle. Drivers
