BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) – An orangutan that has lived 20 years at the Buenos Aires zoo is entitled to some legal rights enjoyed by humans, an Argentine court has ruled, a decision the ape’s attorney called unprecedented and a ticket to greater freedom. The ruling comes a month after a local animal rights group filed a habeas corpus writ in favor of Sandra, who was born in Germany but has lived in captivity in Buenos Aires most of her life. “Following a dynamic … judicial interpretation, it is necessary to recognize that the animal is subject to rights, and should be protected,” said the Dec. 18 ruling, published Monday by the official judicial news agency. ...

Our Chief Executive Officer, Tommy Millner, made the Christmas season merry and bright for a few, special customers by being a “Secret Outfitter.” Tommy posed as a new outfitter in training at our Cabela’s store and then escorted customers to check out at a secret register. At the end of the transactions, Tommy surprised customers by paying for all of the outdoor gear in their carts. But, the Christmas surprise didn’t stop there. The customers also received awesome gear from our friends at The North Face, Kelty and GoPro. This Christmas Season, we invite you to pay it forward to someone with ...

BERKELEY, Mo. (AP) — Violent protests broke out again in suburban St. Louis after another fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer. The shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at a convenience store in Berkeley, Missouri, just a few miles from Ferguson, where Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old, was killed by a white officer in August. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar says the Berkeley shooting victim was black and the officer white. Belmar says police were called about a theft and as the officer questioned two men, one pointed a gun at him. The officer fired three shots. One hit the gunman. A violent protest broke out. Two officers were ...

With Goldi-Lox dead and the year coming to an end, the time has come for me to bid a fond farewell to all of you. This is my final message on Liberty Post. I have been planning this for a while now. This board was a refreshing refuge from the madness at TOS, and I have really enjoyed my years here, but as time has gone by I have found myself posting less and less frequently -- not just to this board, but to the Internet in general. I'm afraid that over the past twenty years of being on the Net I've said pretty much all I have to say on every topic, and I feel as though I'm just repeating myself endlessly to no good purpose. There was once a time when sites like this had value, ...

In what is being described as the biggest robbery of its type, thieves in Italy have stolen a staggering 260 tons of chocolate from Swiss company Lindt & Sprüngli. The Zurich-based company has confirmed the losses in recent months following an announcement by Italian police on Thursday over the recovery of 50 tons of chocolate in Nola, near Naples. The stolen chocolate — 5,000 boxes of the Lindor brand —was valued at 1.5 million euros, police said. But it was just a portion of the booty stolen from an external warehouse in Milan in August, a Lindt & Sprüngli spokeswoman told the Tages Anzeiger newspaper. The value of the stolen sweets is close to eight ...

Florida Florida senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-95, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a Florida State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this!" and pulled over to await the trooper's arrival. Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then ...

A Brandt name to relaunch a country

We know him as Willy Brandt - but that was just a pseudonym the former chancellor took to avoid the Nazis. Born Herbert Frahm in Lübeck on December 18th, 1913, former chancellor Willy Brandt’s name is carried by streets and squares across Germany (and even now its troubled Berlin-Brandenburg BER airport). But few people know about the statesman’s near spy novel early years – or his kaleidoscopic series of identities. Humble origins indeed: The son of a single mother who worked as a store cashier, the future West German chancellor went on to lead a war-time life packed with the exploits of storybook legend. A member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) from 1930, he ...

(Ohio Gov. John Kasich) Governor Signs Bill Restricting Red Light Cameras

COLUMBUS (AP) -- Ohio's governor has signed a bill to require a police officer's presence for tickets to be issued from traffic cameras. The legislation would regulate the statewide use of the devices, though opponents say it's tantamount to a ban. Gov. John Kasich's signature came Friday, a day after a divided Ohio Supreme Court again upheld use of traffic camera enforcement by the state's municipalities, reversing a lower court after a year of legal setbacks for camera advocates. Traffic cameras surged in use but have faced increasing pushback, including challenges to their constitutionality and criticism they're nothing more than moneymakers for cities. Voters ...

Al Sharpton was in Sears. He was there to protest the fact that most all of the washing machines were white. So the clerk called the store manager, who asked, Whats the problem here, Reverend? Sharpton pointed at the machines and loudly bemoaned the fact that most of them were white. The manager replied, Well, Reverend, it's true that most of the washing machines are white, but if you'll open the lids, you'll see that all the agitators are black."

Germany to Register Gun Owners in International Database

Continuing a dubious record as a champion of freedom in Europe, "the German government plans to launch its complete registry of legal gun owners at the beginning of next year, two years ahead of a deadline set by the EU [European Union]," according to a German website. After all, "Under new EU laws, all member countries are obliged to compile a centralized register." Meanwhile, Cecilia Malmstrom, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs--leaving to other bureaucrats the tiresome business of preventing the economic collapse of Western Europe--found time instead to muse about the "the harm caused by firearms" and the need for the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty. In ...
