BERKELEY, Mo. (AP) — Violent protests broke out again in suburban St. Louis after another fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer. The shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at a convenience store in Berkeley, Missouri, just a few miles from Ferguson, where Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old, was killed by a white officer in August. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar says the Berkeley shooting victim was black and the officer white. Belmar says police were called about a theft and as the officer questioned two men, one pointed a gun at him. The officer fired three shots. One hit the gunman. A violent protest broke out. Two officers were ...

With Goldi-Lox dead and the year coming to an end, the time has come for me to bid a fond farewell to all of you. This is my final message on Liberty Post. I have been planning this for a while now. This board was a refreshing refuge from the madness at TOS, and I have really enjoyed my years here, but as time has gone by I have found myself posting less and less frequently -- not just to this board, but to the Internet in general. I'm afraid that over the past twenty years of being on the Net I've said pretty much all I have to say on every topic, and I feel as though I'm just repeating myself endlessly to no good purpose. There was once a time when sites like this had value, ...

In what is being described as the biggest robbery of its type, thieves in Italy have stolen a staggering 260 tons of chocolate from Swiss company Lindt & Sprüngli. The Zurich-based company has confirmed the losses in recent months following an announcement by Italian police on Thursday over the recovery of 50 tons of chocolate in Nola, near Naples. The stolen chocolate — 5,000 boxes of the Lindor brand —was valued at 1.5 million euros, police said. But it was just a portion of the booty stolen from an external warehouse in Milan in August, a Lindt & Sprüngli spokeswoman told the Tages Anzeiger newspaper. The value of the stolen sweets is close to eight ...

Florida Florida senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-95, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a Florida State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this!" and pulled over to await the trooper's arrival. Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then ...

A Brandt name to relaunch a country

We know him as Willy Brandt - but that was just a pseudonym the former chancellor took to avoid the Nazis. Born Herbert Frahm in Lübeck on December 18th, 1913, former chancellor Willy Brandt’s name is carried by streets and squares across Germany (and even now its troubled Berlin-Brandenburg BER airport). But few people know about the statesman’s near spy novel early years – or his kaleidoscopic series of identities. Humble origins indeed: The son of a single mother who worked as a store cashier, the future West German chancellor went on to lead a war-time life packed with the exploits of storybook legend. A member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) from 1930, he ...

COLUMBUS (AP) -- Ohio's governor has signed a bill to require a police officer's presence for tickets to be issued from traffic cameras. The legislation would regulate the statewide use of the devices, though opponents say it's tantamount to a ban. Gov. John Kasich's signature came Friday, a day after a divided Ohio Supreme Court again upheld use of traffic camera enforcement by the state's municipalities, reversing a lower court after a year of legal setbacks for camera advocates. Traffic cameras surged in use but have faced increasing pushback, including challenges to their constitutionality and criticism they're nothing more than moneymakers for cities. Voters ...

Al Sharpton was in Sears. He was there to protest the fact that most all of the washing machines were white. So the clerk called the store manager, who asked, Whats the problem here, Reverend? Sharpton pointed at the machines and loudly bemoaned the fact that most of them were white. The manager replied, Well, Reverend, it's true that most of the washing machines are white, but if you'll open the lids, you'll see that all the agitators are black."

Continuing a dubious record as a champion of freedom in Europe, "the German government plans to launch its complete registry of legal gun owners at the beginning of next year, two years ahead of a deadline set by the EU [European Union]," according to a German website. After all, "Under new EU laws, all member countries are obliged to compile a centralized register." Meanwhile, Cecilia Malmstrom, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs--leaving to other bureaucrats the tiresome business of preventing the economic collapse of Western Europe--found time instead to muse about the "the harm caused by firearms" and the need for the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty. In ...

RT... For two years the villagers of Kalachi in Kazakhstan have been suffering from an inexplicable disorder, where they fall asleep for no apparent reason. The indiscriminate illness has no cure. Episodes begin without warning, and those affected never know if they will wake up again. Its causes and consequences remain unknown despite multiple attempts by medics and scientists to solve the riddle. Now the RTD team goes to Sleepy Hollow, as it has come to be known, to undertake its own investigation. Poster Comment:Maria Ene I believe it is a satellite which targets some area with a strong magnetic field on a frequency that humans use in brain and causes "falling asleep". Sounds ...

The Road Not Taken: Bernardo judge considered priesthood The judge who presided over the Paul Bernardo trial considers the question, then chooses his words very carefully: did he ever pray during his 29 years on the bench? "In very, very stressful periods - of which I've had few - yes, I would sometimes just go into a church, an empty church and sit, contemplate. A little bit of prayer, yes," Patrick LeSage tells Tapestry in an interview. If a person breaks a law, it doesn't make them a criminal. You may commit a crime, that doesn't make you a criminal in my eyes. Patrick LeSage But the retired chief justice of the Superior Court of Ontario is emphatic about ...

RT... Cuba’s former leader Fidel Castro has been awarded the Confucius Peace Prize, China’s alternative to the Nobel. Castro was praised for “important contributions on eliminating nuclear war after his retirement,” and will get US$15,000. The 88-year-old icon was selected from 14 individuals, including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and two organizations, to win China’s peace prize, state newspaper the Global Times reported on Thursday "While in office, Castro didn't resort to violence or force to settle disputes in international relations, especially with the United States," the report said. The professor as a pretender. What role do professors play in social life?

Pravda...How do they affect the quality of public policy? The perceptions of what a professor is thought to be tends to be wrapped up in the narratives of public images around certain 'pop' individuals who have developed through history and fiction. Take for example when someone uses the term "Einstein". The term "Einstein" is now a persona meaning someone who is brilliant, a brilliance almost untouchable for the 'average man in the street'. It also allures to that person having a sense of pragmatism in solving 'unsolvable' problems. The "professor" played by Russell Johnson in the long running TV series Gilligan's Island, showed ...

PLAINS, Mont., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A dead coyote hung from a tree with a Christmas bow along a Montana school bus route is outraging residents, but police said the display is not illegal. Plains resident Mary Ellen Siegford, who posted a picture of the less-than-cheerful holiday display on Facebook, said her daughter burst into tears when she saw the dead animal. "A lot of people were just like, 'Well, be glad it's dead. You don't have to worry about it eating your pets,'" Siegford told KECI-TV. "But I don't know. To me, it's morbid, it rings of animal cruelty. It's just not very pleasant to drive past, and I feel it's pretty gruesome for the ...

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A series of canals and pipelines stretching over 1,400 kilometers began diverting water on Friday from China's longest river, the Yangtze, directly to the country's arid northern regions, including capital city Beijing. The completion of the water scheme marked major progress in the nation's enormous south-to-north water diversion project, the largest of its kind in the world at an estimated cost of 500 billion yuan (about 80 billion U.S. dollars). The project, which aims to alleviate water shortages in the north, is another engineering achievement by the Chinese. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the world's longest man-made river, was ...
