Inspired by a popular guide to Understanding the British, I've put together a few entries in a Foreigners' Guide to Understanding Brazilians. Portuguese speakers and Brazilianists are invited to add more in the comments. Hat tip to Brazil-based journalists Andrew Downie and Dom Phillips, who contributed items, and Olivier Teboul, a Frenchman living in Belo Horizonte whose list of "Brazilian curiosities" (in Portuguese) has generated a huge response from amused, and sometimes bemused, locals. What Brazilians say: Yes (Sim) What foreigners hear: Yes What Brazilians mean: Anything from yes through perhaps to no What Brazilians say: Perhaps (Talvez) What foreigners hear: ...

Poster Comment:A reminder to think before you do something this stupid. I know someone who was riding with her brother and her brother thought he could make it to an exit which was to his right and one which he should have passed up and went on to the next one and came back. Instead he cut in front of a tractor trailer, probably thinking he could beat it, and he didn't. As a result he almost killed his sister, took most of her right arm off iirc. No appointment, no excuse is evenly remotely a justification for doing something this dumb while driving. Some things can’t be undone.

Local fr A French court of appeal has ruled in favour of extraditing to Russia a former finance minister accused of embezzling billions of rubles. Kuznetsov was arrested close to St Tropez in the summer of 2013 in possession of passports in five different names. He stands accused by the Russian authorities of embezzling some 14 billion rubles, more than €400,000 million at the time, when he was finance minister for the Moscow region between 2005 and 2008. The money was allegedly laundered in ...

Medscape... NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Motorcycle injuries requiring a trip to the hospital have increased in recent years among older male riders, while injury rates for women and younger men haven't changed, according to a new study from Canada. The spike in injuries among men over 45 suggests that more male Baby Boomers are taking to two wheels as a leisure activity, and they may need training and other injury prevention strategies, say the researchers. "We were surprised by the extent of the increase in injuries among older men motorcycle riders," said Mariana Brussoni of the British Columbia Injury Research and Prevention Unit, who led the study published in the BC ...

Pravda...Some parents may give very unusual names to their newborn babies. In Russia, the choice of names for babies can be very unusual too, for example, Dawn (Rassvet), Moon (Luna), or Oceana. Yet, the choice of parents from the city of Perm shocked the whole country. They called their baby boy Lucifer. Twenty-four-year-old mother explained her choice by the fact that she and her husband were "Satanists". "I wanted to name him Lucian, but my husband wanted another name - Lucifer. My labor was very complicated, and I promised that if the baby survived, we'd call him Lucifer. All went well, so I kept my promise," the boy's mother, Natalia Menshikova told PRM.ru ...

Could telepathy exist?

ScienceAlert: Telepathy might sound like science fiction, but scientists have already achieved direct brain-to-brain communication between humans...and they've managed to read the minds of cats too. Telepathy may be best known in science fiction, but over the past 20 years, scientists have made huge breakthroughs in achieving "mind links" in real life, as the latest episode of BrainCraft explains. And, naturally, it all started with cats. In the late 1990s, scientists connected electrodes to the visual areas of cats' brains while they watched a film. This allowed them to "hack" into their thoughts, and replay the movie through the eyes of the cats. Put simply, ...

Three hunters ran into a bear who seemed unafraid of people in the forests of Russia’s Khanty-Mansiisk autonomous region. After being shot by one of the men in the thigh, the bear left. But in the morning the unlucky hunter found his car ripped apart by the revengeful animal, he believes. Whoever it was, the car was left scratched with smashed windscreen and broken lights, while the front and rear seats were torn almost to pieces. Poster Comment:Maybe it was bigfoot, not a bear.

Does the Age of Online Education Herald the Death of Academics?

Epoch Times... In the mid-1980s as a further education lecturer I was mocked by some more traditional colleagues for using “lantern slides”, their term for the then newfangled technology of the overhead projector, or OHP. These Luddites strutted the corridors with coffee-tinted sheaves of notes stuffed untidily under their arms. They would sweep into the classroom, fling their pencil-written papyri on the lectern and, without so much as a glance at their students, commence reading out loud. They seemed to think that their exegesis of the sacred texts of economics and business studies was blessed with a natural authority. The students concurred. Even when I projected my plastic ...

Life after death exists? Scientists gather 'out-of-body' evidence in 'largest-ever' study

RT... It seems that scientists have finally offered some concrete evidence that life after death really does exist, as the largest-ever study into the issue showed that patients could recall intricate details despite being officially declared clinically dead. Researchers based at the UK’s University of Southampton, who were involved in the AWARE (“AWAreness during REsuscitation”) study published in the journalResuscitation, claim that almost 40 percent of people who survived clinical death described some kind of “awareness” during the time before their hearts were restarted. The study, led by Dr. Sam Parnia, from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, ...

Saudi Arabia: The Middle East’s Real Apartheid State

Saudi Arabia abolished slavery in 1962 under pressure from President Kennedy, who accomplished what the Ottoman Empire and the League of Nations had not been able to, but that hasn’t stopped its citizens from selling castrated slaves on Facebook or its princes from beating their black slaves todeath in posh London hotels. The Saudis had clung to their racist privileges longer than anyone else. When rumors reached Mecca that the Ottoman Empire might be considering the abolition of African slavery and equal rights for all, the chief of the Ulema of Mecca issued a fatwa declaring “the ban on slaves is contrary to Sharia (Islamic Law)… with such proposals the Turks have become ...

Date: 09-08-14 Host: George Noory Guests: W. Keith Campbell In the first half, Professor at the University of Georgia, W. Keith Campbell, discussed the epidemic of narcissism in our culture. He defined narcissism as having a grandiose or inflated sense of self-- being a "legend in your own mind," and thinking that you're better than other people or better than you really are. Narcissism is a trait that most people have some of in their life, but when it reaches a certain level, it can be diagnosed as a disorder or condition, he said. RT... The Russian Duma has passed the final reading of a law forbidding holders of foreign passports from controlling or owning more than 20 percent of any media outlet. The law, proposed just ten days ago, will extensively affect Russia’s publishing sector. “The freedom of the press is guaranteed by our Constitution, and won’t be affected,” said Mikhail Margelov, one of the 430 deputies who voted to support the law, with only two voting against. "The law is designed to protect our national interests, to safeguard the sovereignty of our media, and our country.” “The information war against Russia has its own laws, and has forced our hand,” said ...
