China's unwanted babies once mostly girls, now mostly sick, disabled

TIANJIN, China (Reuters) - Fangfang was just a few days old when she was abandoned on a near freezing New Year's Day in north China. She was relatively lucky. Unlike the many who are found dumped in train stations or toilets, her family left her at a safe, warm shelter. Dozens of babies have been secretly dropped off at "baby safety islands", or "baby hatches", set up since late last year under a scheme aimed at protecting unwanted offspring. "We need to build these islands to protect children from further injury," Zhang Min, head of a government-run orphanage in the northern coastal city of Tianjin where Fangfang was found. The babies there are ...

What Are Nightmares Made Of?

Few studies have delved into the dark details and emotions associated with nightmares, and even fewer have used dream logs as a basis for analysis. As researchers at the University of Montreal note in a new study forthcoming in Sleep, daily logs are the so-called “gold standard” for this type of research because other evaluations, like interviews and questionnaires, can “yield inaccurate dream reports due to the fragile nature of dreams’ long-term recall as well as memory and saliency biases.” When scientists ask a subject to recount the details of a nightmare, they’re more inclined to draw from the extreme fringes than the standard fare. “This may ...

Short people paranoid

PressTV... Scientists have found that feeling shorter makes people more susceptible to feelings of paranoia and inferiority as well as extreme mistrust. A team of researchers from Britain's Oxford University used virtual reality (VR) technology to decrease the height of 60 adult women who were travelling on a computer-simulated Tube train by 25 centimeters. The volunteers who were prone to having "mistrustful thoughts" experienced the same journey for a second time at their normal height. The results of the study indicated that most participants reported negative feelings, such as being incompetent, unlikeable or inferior when they were height-reduced. The researchers ...

BOISE -- Republicans promoting Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's proposed $2 million fund to kill wolves say they hope the cash helps reduce Idaho's population of the canine predators by more than 500 animals, to just 150 wolves in 15 packs. Rep. Marc Gibbs of Grace and Sen. Bert Brackett of Rogerson on Monday told the House Resources and Conservation Committee money set aside with Otter's proposal will bolster Idaho's predator arsenal. Idaho now has about 680 wolves, according to Department of Fish and Game estimates. Brackett says the priority is to keep wolves delisted, even with these proposed killings. He said provided Idaho still has 150 wolves -- the minimum ...

The Road Not Taken

The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claimBecause it was grassy and wanted wear,Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to wayI doubted if I should ever come back.I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,I took the one less traveled by,And ...

"Drop and take cover when you see the bright flash from a meteor fireball", U.S. doctors urge

Sacramento Bee Blast damage in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk last February saw thousands of windows blown in by the shockwave, which arrived a couple of minutes after the bright flash. U.S. doctors working with Federal emergency preparedness programs are encouraging people, once they see a similar bright flash, to get away from windows during those crucial few minutes. At the time of the Emergency Management Agency of Utah (UEMA) conference on Jan 9, 2014, Physicians for Civil Defense issued the following statement: All Americans, starting with first responders and emergency managers, need to know this basic life-saving principle: "Drop and cover if you see a sudden very bright ...

A MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up 'revocation' in the Oxford English Dictionary.) Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except North Dakota, which she does not fancy). Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections. ...

A stunning Federal Security Services (FSB) report on the nearly two million highly classified top-secret documents obtained from the United States Department of Defense (DOD) run National Security Agency-Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) by the American ex-patriot Edward Snowden states that this information is providing “incontrovertible proof” that an “alien/extraterrestrial intelligence agenda” is driving US domestic and international policy, and has been doing so since at least 1945. Edward Snowden is a computer specialist, a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee, and former NSA/CSS contractor who disclosed these classified documents to ...

PressTV... Caffeine can improve mental and cognitive functions through stimulating many regions of the brain that regulate wakefulness, arousal, mood and concentration. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University found that those people who regularly consumed caffeinated products had better results on the memory tests. The study results were confirmed after monitoring the memories of 160 people who did not regularly eat or drink caffeinated products over 24 hours. The participants divided into two groups, those ones who were given caffeine tablet and the second group without taking caffeine. The researchers took the participants’ saliva samples to check base levels of caffeine and ...

Local Norway Doctors in Tromsø set fire to a patient who was undergoing a heart operation, causing her to wake up with third degree burns. Man dies after electric wheelchair catches fire (23 Oct 13) After spraying the patient with surgical alcohol to disinfect an open would, they then began to use an electrical scalpel, which unfortunately ignited the fluid. "We are talking about a rare but very unfortunate incident," said Dr Rolf Busund, clinical manager at the University Hospital of Northern Norway, where the operation took place. "This event is a clear reminder that although our procedures are very good, such things still happen." He said that ignition was ...
