A team of MBA students were the recipients of the 2013 Hult Prize earlier this week, providing them with $1 million in seed money to produce an insect-based, protein-rich flour for feeding malnourished populations in other countries. The product is called Power Flour. "It's a huge deal because we had a very ambitious but highly executable five-year plan in place," said team captain Mohammed Ashour, whose team hails from McGill University in Montreal. "So winning this prize is a great step in that direction." Ashour, along with teammates Shobhita Soor, Jesse Pearlstein, Zev Thompson and Gabe Mott, will be immediately working with an advisory board to recruit ...

The study, which has just been published online in the international journal Developmental Psychology, measured the effect of different types of social interactions on the day to day happiness of 74 Adelaide men and women over the age of 85. As part of the survey, participants recorded their emotions in the presence of various social partners – including their spouse, family, friends and carers – six times a day over seven consecutive days in 2010. The majority (68 per cent) of participants were widowed, however the female respondents who did have a spouse ...

One of her neighbors called 9-11 at 3:50am on Monday after they heard a man in her home screaming for help. When officers arrived at the home, Boyd tried to block the doors — police had to force their way into the house. The two men who were held in the home said Boyd would not let them leave until one of them would have sex with her. After they were rescued by policemen, they decided not to press charges. As reported by News4Jax, “One of the victims tells investigators that the suspect is not a bad person, but called ...

Dear Wife, I’m writing you this letter to tell you that I’m leaving you forever. I’ve been a good man to you for 7 years & I have nothing to show for it. These last 2 weeks have been hell. … Your boss called to tell me that you quit your job today & that was the last straw. Last week, you came home & didn’t even notice I had a new haircut, had cooked your favorite meal & even wore a brand new pair of silk boxers. You ate in 2 minutes, & went straight to sleep after watching all of your soaps. You don’t tell me you love me anymore; you don’t want sex or anything that connects us as husband & wife. Either you’re cheating on me ...

Medscape... The sensitive topic of doctor-patient romance heated up a recent all-physician discussion on Medscape Connect. The conversation ranged from general ethical warnings to specific forms of temptation, as doctors bravely explored some delicate areas. A dermatologist began the discussion with personal history and a question: "Since I stopped wearing my wedding band about a year ago, more of my patients have increased interest in me. Just out of curiosity, how many of you have dated active patients or former patients?" Several colleagues were clear and firm in their opposition to these kinds of associations. An internist framed the dilemma in contrasting lists: ...

Found the following in an article about "facebook don'ts." http://www.business2community.com/facebook/11-things-you-need-to-immediately-stop-doing-on-facebook-0438370 4. New Page Invites Look, I understand you need to create a page for your business, but please stop inviting me to your half-ass Facebook pages. Instead post interesting content to your own page, share it on your profile as well (so your friends see it), and if people find it interesting they will follow. It’s almost not your fault, as creating a page and inviting all your friends can be tempting, but most of your friends won’t like your page and maybe they won’t like you anymore either. And the ...

ScienceDaily Sep. 24, 2013 — Drug ads often warn of serious side effects, from nausea and bleeding to blindness, even death. New research suggests that, rather than scaring consumers away, these warnings can improve consumers' opinions and increase product sales when there is a delay between seeing the ad and deciding to buy or consume the product. "Messages that warn consumers about potentially harmful side effects -- presumably with the intent to nudge them to act more cautiously -- can ironically backfire," says psychological scientist Ziv Carmon of INSEAD in Singapore. Working with Yael Steinhart of Tel Aviv University and Yaacov Trope at New York University, Carmon ...

This medical case may give a whole new meaning to the phrase "beer gut." A 61-year-old man — with a history of home-brewing — stumbled into a Texas emergency room complaining of dizziness. Nurses ran a Breathalyzer test. And sure enough, the man's blood alcohol concentration was a whopping 0.37 percent, or almost five times the legal limit for driving in Texas. There was just one hitch: The man said that he hadn't touched a drop of alcohol that day. "He would get drunk out of the blue — on a Sunday morning after being at church, or really, just anytime," says Barabara Cordell, the dean of nursing at Panola College in Carthage, Texas. "His ...

The disclosure of the form has caused a quick reaction from the country’s opposition, the National Democratic Party (NDP.) “To single out ill and injured soldiers and require them to sign this form is tantamount to saying, ...
