Is Wine Bullshit?

A Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux sells for a minimum of around $500 a bottle, while humble brands like Charles Shaw and Franzia sell for as little as $2. But as far as “wine economists” are concerned, the level of correlation between the price of a bottle of wine and its quality is low or nonexistent. In a number of damning studies, they suggest that wine is not just poorly priced, but that the different tastes we describe in wine may all be in our heads. A 2008 paper in The Journal of Wine Economics, for example, found that when consumers are unaware of a wine’s price, they “on average enjoy more expensive wines slightly less [than cheap ones].” Experts do not fare ...

The "crazy ant," so named because it doesn't travel in straight lines, has spread from Texas to Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida challenging pest removal companies, authorities and homeowners who have literally been overrun in some cases. The ants forage together in the millions and devour so many insects that bird populations are being driven elsewhere to look for food. She interviewed entomologist Prof. Robert Puckett who said the density of the ants can become overwhelming. "I've seen infestations where there were loads and loads of ants crawling around inside the house...I've literally seen trash bags full of ants," he remarked. The crazy ants which are ...

CIA leaker Edward Snowden may have found a soul mate in Russia. “Snowden, will you marry me?” the 31-year-old former sleeper agent, dubbed a “femme fatale” by international media, wrote in a tweet posted Wednesday. “NSA, will you look after our children?” Chapman wrote in another tweet, referring to Snowden’s former employer, the US National ...

Could the Loch Ness Monster actually be the result of a fault line?

(AP)The legend of the Loch Ness Monster has persevered for more than 200 years. But could tales of a prehistoric sea creature located in a deep Scottish body of water be explained by science? That’s the source of a new theory, which speculates that the Loch Ness Monster may actually be a fault line lying underneath the Scottish lake. Even after 200 years of technological advances since the first reported spotting in 1806, rumors of the Loch Ness Monster continue to persist. In fact, technology has played a role in spawning some Nessie theories. For example, in 2011, local boat skipper Marcus Atkinson produced a sonar image of what he described as a large object following his boat ...

A secretary for a foreign embassy was entertaining a wealthy ambassador at a very expensive restaurant in New York. The ambassador was so enthralled by her beauty that he asked her to marry him. The secretary knew she couldn't insult a foreign dignitary, so she decided to let him down easy. "I'll only marry you under three conditions." "Anything, anything," said the ambassador. "First, you must buy me a 14-karat gold wedding band with a 72-karat diamond, along with a 28-inch studded matching necklace for our engagement." The ambassador picked up his cell phone, called his personal accountant, and said, "Yes, yes, I buy, I buy!" ...

Yahoo News A 37-year-old Georgia woman whose birth certificate mistakenly labeled her as male had to jump through some major hoops to get her driver's license renewed. Fox 5 Atlanta spoke with Nakia Grimes of Clayton County about her odyssey to get the typo cleared up. Grimes said she never really had occasion to look closely at her birth certificate, so she never noticed the mistake. "You only look at the name, the date and the year," Grimes told Fox 5. "I've never seen that." The woman working at Georgia's Department of Driver Services did notice and came to Grimes with an unusual request. "She said I needed to go have a PAP exam, have a doctor ...

From Cocaine Through High Fructose Corn Syrup, the Story of Coke

Epoch Times: An interview with Mark Pendergrast, author of For God, Country & Coca-Cola (Basic Books) MR: Your newly expanded book, For God, Country & Coca-Cola, certainly tells the complete history of Coca-Cola for Coke buffs and enthusiasts, collectors and food historians. But it also offers a view of social, political and marketing history in the US which is fascinating. MP: By restricting the history to Coca-Cola–looking at history through a green Coke bottle, so to speak–I could look at a wide array of subjects. The book has appealed to people who are interested in popular culture, marketing history, imperialism, equity, the impact of war, public health, ...

Magician's levitation secret revealed

Sad news, levitation fans: Dynamo, the magician who caused a stir in London earlier this week by appearing to levitate alongside a double-decker bus, was not, in fact, levitating. It was an illusion. According to a crowdsourced investigation conducted on Australia's news.com.au Facebook page, Dynamo's "arm" was actually a steel prosthetic that was fastened to the bus. A harness lifted Dynamo into position, the site concluded, as his hand was tucked inside. A video of the stunt, which was sponsored by Pepsi Max, was thoroughly dissected. "His fingers don't move in the clip and there are no people around when he hovers up and down the bus," the news site ...

Author: Stephanie Kovalchik The United States is experiencing an epidemic of sexual violence. New findings from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), a study launched by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010, report that nearly 1 in 5 women are estimated to have been the victims of rape, defined as unwanted completed or attempted sexual penetration, including victims who did not have the capacity to give consent (owing to intoxication, for example). In almost all cases, the perpetrator was someone the victim knew (91.9%) and more than half of the time was their own partner. Young adulthood was the period of highest risk for first sexual ...

Why Taco Bell is rebranding some meat as 'protein'
Post Date: 2013-06-25 23:32:27 by Tatarewicz

Taco Bell will soon start marketing some of its "taco meat fillings" under an even more ambiguous name: protein. That's the plan for a handful of restaurants in Dayton, Ohio, where the chain will test out a new "Power Protein" menu featuring four new chicken and steak entrees starting July 25. The rebranding is not about moving away from the word "meat" itself so much as it is about offering healthier menu options, according to the company. All the new offerings will have at least 20 grams of protein and fewer than 420 calories, making them the first items "created with our new nutritional guardrails in mind," according to a Taco Bell press ...

C2C recap - Biocommunication
Post Date: 2013-06-24 04:14:00 by Tatarewicz

Doctor of cognition and neuroscience, Gerald Epling, discussed his work on phenomenal bio-communication which measures and records the energy responses to plants in various conditions as well as responses of one life form to another. "We don't know why it happens," Epling marveled, "but we do have evidence that it happens on a quantum level." He explained that, according to biophysiological research, plants have been shown to respond to a person's thoughts as well as positive and negative actions towards it. While Epling theorized that plants possess "some kind of an emotional system," whether or not they can feel pain remains a mystery. Over the ...
