Saudi Arabian spy chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has been assassinated, a report says. The Paris-based Voltaire Network confirmed the death of 63-year-old Prince Bandar on its website on Monday, citing unofficial sources. The international non-profit organization, which publishes a free website (voltairenet.org) in eight languages, said that Prince Bandar was killed because of his role in the July 18 deadly bombing in Damascus. The bombing killed at least four high-profile Syrian security officials, including Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha and his deputy Assef Shawkat who was also President Bashar al-Assad's brother-in-law. However, there has been no ...

Permanent War: Official US Policy

Permanent War: Official US Policy by Stephen Lendman Nations don’t wage permanent wars and survive. Imagine one calling itself a democracy trying. Washington spends more on militarism and imperial wars than the rest of the world combined. At the same time, vital domestic needs go begging. America lives by the sword. One day it'll perish by it. Perhaps so will humanity. The more wars it wages and longer they continue, the faster homeland and international support erodes. What can't go on forever won't. Since 9/11 alone, Paul Craig Roberts says "11 years of failure" hasn't deterred America's rage to fight. "(T)he same Washington con artists who ...

What is it with this love of death that people have?

I don't understand it. I don't know that I ever will understand it. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on this? On the political side, they trip over each other to say who is going to get bombed, invaded etc. And people support this. Those that don't are a minority. We are the exceptions that prove the rule. Too many advances have been made because of war. On the religious side, where too many advances were stifled because it it, and where they worship a made-up psychopath and its imaginary "son" and think of them as being perfect, they are just as in love with death as anyone else. Oh, they'll tell you how they love everyone, but their actions do not match ...

High Stakes in Syria

High Stakes in Syria by Stephen Lendman The region's fate hangs in the balance. Perhaps much more. The potential ugly reality is chilling. Make no mistake. Washington orchestrated months of bloodbath. Obama officials bear full responsibility. They were last year against Libya. They are currently as violence wracks the country. The battle for Aleppo now rages. Syrian forces are going all out to free the city from Western sponsored death squads. They're battling thousands of hired killers. They're in neighborhoods. They use human shields. They target pro-Assad loyalists. They murder them. Washington's strategy dictates it. Wrongfully blaming Assad advances the ball closer ...

Preventing More Middle East Wars Tops All Priorities

Preventing More Middle East Wars Tops All Priorities by Stephen Lendman Washington's dirty hands control regional belligerence. Longstanding policy unleashed a regional bloodbath. It advances America's imperium. Willing partners include NATO and Middle East allies. They're serial killers for their own self-interest. Post-9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya were ravaged. Destroying Syria is underway. Expect Iran and other targeted states to follow. A previous article discussed Canadian psychiatrist Robert Hare. He describes psychopathic behavior clinically. Administration and congressional leaders exhibit prominent features. They're amoral, unethical, deceitful, and ...

Syrian Gov. alarmed of Fake Syrian Satellite Channel

DAMASCUS- Syria`s Information Ministry urged Friday Syrian nationals to be cautious and avoid misleading fake media outlets who allege being Syrian official TVs. Syria`s Information Ministry announced that there is a satellite channel using the logo of the Syrian Satellite Channel and broadcasting nationalistic songs in preparation for springing a media ambush which has been uncovered before. This channel may appear on the same frequency as the genuine channel if it is cut off at any time, Information Ministry added. The Information Ministry also affirmed that the continuation of the genuine Syrian channels is linked to the presence of its well-known programs and presenters, and that the ...

War Without Mercy on Syria

War Without Mercy on Syria by Stephen Lendman Western media misreport what's happening in Syria and why. Propaganda substitutes for truth and full disclosure. Syrians are struggling to prevent Western conquest, exploitation, and control. They're fighting for their lives to stay free. At issue isn't whether Assad's government is democratic, despotic or anything in between. Its sovereign independence made it vulnerable. Washington tolerates no governments it doesn't control. Replacing them with puppet regimes is policy. Whether Assad can hold out and prevail isn't known. Most Syrians depend on him. The longer conflict persists, the greater his support. Who else ...

US Proxy Al Qaeda Death Squads in Syria

US Proxy Al Qaeda Death Squads in Syria by Stephen Lendman Washington's agenda involves death squad diplomacy. Evidence mounts proving it. It's standard practice in all US direct and proxy wars. It's how America treats its enemies. Massacres and unspeakable atrocities are committed. Women are raped. Civilians are treated like combatants. They're indiscriminately killed. Others are targeted for opposing US aggression. Children are harmed like adults. Prisoners are tortured. No crime's too gruesome to commit. Lies, duplicity, and coverup follow. Media scoundrels bear direct responsibility. Their hands are bloodstained like US officials, forces and proxy killers. ...

Al-Qaeda Infiltrating Syrian Opposition, With US Support

Russia slammed the US for 'justifying terrorism' in Syria Al-Qaeda militants and other Sunni extremists are becoming a greater and greater part of the conflict in Syria, just as the US officially announced it was abandoning any pretense of a diplomatic approach in favor of toppling the regime through proxy rebel groups. “The evidence is mounting that Syria has become a magnet for Sunni extremists, including those operating under the banner of Al Qaeda,” reports the New York Times. “The presence of jihadists in Syria has accelerated in recent days in part because of a convergence with the sectarian tensions across the country’s long border in Iraq.” ...

Intense Anti-Assad Propaganda

Intense Anti-Assad Propaganda by Stephen Lendman Western propaganda is relentless. Media scoundrels regurgitate official misinformation and bald-faced lies. Truth and full disclosure are verboten. Judith Miller is back. In fact, she never went away. Earlier she fell from grace for shilling for GW Bush's Iraq war. She wrote daily propaganda pieces. She was a Pentagon press agent. She still is. She’s not a legitimate journalist. After Syrian officials were killed last week, she called its defense apparatus "decapitated." In fact, those killed were quickly replaced. Syrian forces routed Western death squads in Damascus and elsewhere. It's battling them in Aleppo. ...

Syria Threatens No One

Syria Threatens No One by Stephen Lendman Media scoundrels specialize in distorting comments and meaning. They're hyperbolic over Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi saying Syria would only use chemical weapons against external aggression. His message was clear. Distortion, misinterpretation, and willful lying about it followed. Inflammatory headlines blared. More on what Makdissi meant below. At the State Department's daily press briefing, Victoria Nuland commented on Syria's chemical weapons, saying: Talk about using chemical weapons "is horrific and chilling." Syria "has a responsibility to the world (and) its own citizens to protect and safeguard ...

Washington's Plan B for Syria

Washington's Plan B for Syria by Stephen Lendman Replacing independent governments with pro-Western puppets is official US policy. So is war on Islam. After Soviet Russia dissolved, Muslims replaced communists as public enemy number one. Since the 1990s, millions were ruthlessly killed. Many more die daily. Dozens succumb every day in Syria. US- sponsored death squads murder them. On July 20 or 21st, Ramadan began. It continues for 30 days until August 18. It's a time for prayer, fasting, reflection, spiritual purification, self-sacrifice, charity, and forgiveness. On July 20, Obama hypocritically "extend(ed) warmest wishes to" American and global Muslims. He wished ...

Stoking Fear Ahead of London Olympics

Stoking Fear Ahead of London Olympics by Stephen Lendman America's "war on terror" never ends. Neither does Britain's. After London was named host for this year's summer games, terrorist fears were stoked. Former Australian/UK British civil servant Peter Ryan performs security consulting services. He's advising the International Olympic Committee on London preparations. His consultancy thrives on hyped threats, real or otherwise. After the city was named host in 2005, he told organizers to "think the unthinkable." Besides other advice, he said: "You are not just thinking about football hooligans, getting drunk in a pub and causing trouble." ...

Eight killed in deadly 24 hours for NATO in Afghanistan

HERAT (Reuters) - A gunman wearing an Afghan uniform turned his weapon against foreign trainers working for NATO in the western province of Herat on Sunday, killing three, in a grim 24 hours for the coalition which also saw five NATO soldiers killed. The latest rogue shooting by an Afghan in a police or army uniform happened at a regional training center in the relatively peaceful western province near Afghanistan's border with Iran, which is normally patrolled by Italian forces. "An individual wearing an Afghan National Security Force uniform turned his weapon against ISAF contracted civilian employees in western Afghanistan today, killing three," a spokesman for the ...

Security Council Showdown Aftermath by Stephen Lendman On July 19, Russia and China vetoed a Western resolution on Syria. Invoking UN Charter Chapter VII, it effectively authorized war. Recriminations followed Thursday's vote. At the State Department's July 19 press briefing, spokesman Patrick Ventrell said:. "We think (Moscow and Beijing's veto was) deplorable, and certainly we’re not pleased with the outcome of the vote." "Having said that, we’re going to remain focused on all elements of our national security strategy in terms of keeping the pressure on the Assad regime (for the) kind of political transition" Washington demands. Asked about ...

Sandra Cortez’s Ordeal: Once You’re On the 'List,' You Can’t Get Off

Sandra Cortez, born in Chicago sixty-eight years ago, has never set foot outside the United States. She has no criminal record, and an exemplary credit history. Yet she discovered, through an error in her credit report, that her name was in a terrorist "watch list" – and she apparently has no way to remove it. In March 2005, Cortez – who at the time was living in Denver, Colorado – attempted to buy a vehicle from the John Elway Subaru dealership. "I thought I would be driving my new car back to work after lunch," Cortez recalled. "I couldn't imagine what would happen next." Despite the fact that Cortez had a 761 credit score and money for ...

Syria Roulette by Stephen Lendman In Las Vegas, the house seldom loses. Rarely are dirty Washington schemes foiled. It's playing hardball against Syria. Its dirty hands are all over months of violence. In a July 18 press briefing, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell refused to condemn Wednesday's cold-blooded killings. Syrian Defense Minister Dawood Rajiha, his deputy General Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President General Hassan Turkmani died. A terrorist bombing killed them at Damascus National Security headquarters. At the time, a ministerial, military, and security meeting was in progress. Others attending were injured. Pressed for an answer on whether the Obama ...

Minnesota Town Bans Signs in Yards Unless They're Pro-War

Minnesota Town Bans Signs in Yards Unless They're Pro-War By davidswanson - Posted on 18 July 2012 At a festival called Peacestock in Wisconsin last weekend, I met a woman who lives in Little Falls, Minnesota. That city had forced her to take down signs in her own yard, signs that said "Occupy Wall Street," "Back the 99 Percent" and "Boycott Monsanto." But Robin Hensel noticed that the city itself was displaying, in violation of the same ordinance, a banner reading "We Support Our Troops." For anyone who's been visiting outerspace for the past half-century, "support our troops" is, of course, a phrase meaning "support ...

ICRC Supports Imperialism for Profit

ICRC Supports Imperialism for Profit by Stephen Lendman Progressive News Hour regular James Petras once said most NGOs skim 90% of donations for themselves. They're predators, not humanitarians. They serve political agendas for profit. They avoid denouncing governmental patrons providing financing. They don't link neoliberal exploitation and human rights violations to imperial agendas. They support wrong over right. They prey on the world's vulnerable. They commit flagrant abuses for self-enrichment and close ties to top government officials. ICRC is no exception. More on it below. On July 18, Security Council members again vote on a Western resolution. Russia and China ...

Nothing Civil About Washington's War on Syria

Nothing Civil about Washington's War on Syria by Stephen Lendman Insurgents are Washington proxies. Key NATO partners, rogue Arab League states, and Israel are very much involved. The same dirty game repeats. Independent states are targeted for regime change. All options are used. They include full-scale war, mass killing, and turning nations into charnel houses on the pretext of liberating them. American-style freedom is slavery. Mainstream discourse doesn't explain. It repeats long ago discredited notions about humanitarian intervention and responsibility to protect (R2P). Protracted violence and bloodshed hardly reflect it. Washington-led Western generated violence ravages ...

12 NATO oil tankers torched in eastern Afghanistan

Taliban militants have attacked 12 NATO tankers carrying fuel for US-led forces in eastern Afghanistan, Press TV reports. Afghan officials said that one driver was killed and four security guards were injured late on Sunday when the militants set the tankers on fire in Sayed-Abad district, Wardak province. Afghan officials have blamed Taliban for the attack. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed that the militants have destroyed 25 NATO tankers and killed several drivers as well as security guards. The attack came days after Islamabad agreed to reopen NATO supply routes into Afghanistan and end the bitter months-long standoff with Washington after US Secretary of State Hillary ...

Propaganda War on Syria

Propaganda War on Syria by Stephen Lendman Major media scoundrels suppress truth and full disclosure. In times of war or when they're planned, it dies first. John Pilger calls journalism war's first casualty. It's a "weapon of war," he says. "(V)irulent censorship" by misinformation or "omission" condones imperial lawlessness. George Seldes once called media scoundrels "the most powerful force against the general welfare of the majority of the people." Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) calls "news" largely "the actions and statements of people in power." Big media and reporters regurgitate what they say as ...

US General Hypes Threat of IEDs: US General Hypes Threat of IEDs

Improvised explosive devices were made infamous and frequently used by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, but now a top US general is claiming IEDs are a threat to the homeland. “The global proliferation of IEDs and associated technology is pervasive and continues to threaten US interests at home and abroad,” Lt. Gen. Michael Barbero, head of the military’s Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, told a congressional hearing on Thursday. Americans may be surprised that this is a significant threat to their every day lives, especially because most citizens have never even heard of IEDs because they, in fact, are not a threat. Barbero tried to illustrate how ...

Strategically Timed Syrian Massacre

Strategically Timed Syrian Massacre by Stephen Lendman Insurgents are enlisted, armed, funded, trained, and directed by Western and regional special forces. They decide strategy, targets, and timing. Armies need leadership to operate effectively. So do killer gangs. Special forces have tactical expertise. They're directing Washington's war on Syria. They plan and lead attacks and bombings. Treimseh's massacre was strategically timed. Questions about it remained unanswered. More on that below. Coming when the Security Council considered harsher anti-Assad measures raises obvious red flags. Why then is clear. At issue is pressuring Russia and China to bend. So far both ...

Washington's Man in Tripoli

Washington's Man in Tripoli by Stephen Lendman Mahmoud Jabril takes over as Libya's new leader. He heads its puppet government. Sham elections installed him. The process was farcical. Illusion substituted for reality. Obama called his ascension "another milestone in the country's transition to democracy." EU leaders hailed "Libya's first free elections." They called them the "dawn of a new era." Scoundrel media acclaimed the end of the Gaddafi nightmare. A democratic facade masks New World Order neoliberal fundamentalism. Its holy trinity is eliminating public services, predatory capitalism writ large, and repression enforcing the message ...
