Fact or Fiction? Bin Laden Not killed by US, Claims Former CIA Agent By Press TV May 19, 2012 "Press TV" - -In an interview with Russia’s Channel One, Berkan Yashar, who is also a Turkish politician, said the US has not killed the al-Qaeda leader. “In September of 1992, I was in Chechnya, that’s when I first met the man whose name was Bin Laden. This meeting took place in a two-story house in the city of Grozny; on the top floor was a family of Gamsakhurdia, the Georgian president, who then was kicked out of his country. We met on the bottom floor; Osama lived in the same building,” Yashar said. According to the former CIA agent, he personally knew Bin ...

Life in Occupied Chicago

Life in Occupied Chicago by Stephen Lendman Through Monday, downtown residents live in occupied Chicago. Secret Service agents, NORTHCOM and National Guard forces, as well as thousands of state and local police seem everywhere. Getting around feels hazardous. Anyone may be stopped, searched, interrogated, even arrested. Residents were advised to hunker down and stay out of harm's way as best as possible. For many, it's not easy. More on a city under siege below. NATO is the world's first global war-making alliance. Largely a US imperial tool, it's a killing machine. Its 28 members and dozens of partner states comprise about one-third of the world's nations. ...

On Saturday Chicago police arrested three patsies “accused of making Molotov cocktails” and who were “planning to attack President Barack Obama’s campaign headquarters, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s home and other targets during this weekend’s NATO summit,” according to prosecutors. Brian Church, Vincent Betterly and Jared Chase are charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism. The incident follows a familiar pattern. According to defense attorneys, police agents provocateurs are responsible for the Molotov cocktails and the arrests were timed to discredit protests against the NATO war council held this weekend in Chicago. “This is just propaganda to create ...

France: Afghan exit by year-end -- New French president tells Obama he will honor his campaign pledge

WASHINGTON — In his first visit to the Oval Office, French President Francois Hollande declared he will withdraw all French combat troops from Afghanistan by year's end, making clear to President Barack Obama the timeline for ending the U.S.-led war will not trump a campaign pledge that helped Hollande gain his new job. Obama nodded along on Friday, knowing what was coming, but did not otherwise directly respond. Heading into a NATO summit on the course of the war and beyond, the White House has sought to emphasize the war coalition will remain firm even as nations pull back. And Hollande assured Obama that France was not out to cut and run. "We will continue to support ...

Chicago in a jam: Security services to block cell phone towers ahead of NATO summit? Reports suggest local law enforcement agencies are considering shutting down cell phone services in the city over the weekend and while it will most likely be very effective, many are questioning if the move is legitimate. The Daily Beast reports that the FBI and Secret Service have standing authority to jam signals and they can also push for the shutdown of cell towers, thanks to “Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 303," which lays out the nation’s official “Emergency Wireless Protocols.” According to the National Communications System, the protocol details a “shutdown and ...

War with Iran Imminent: In Days Not Weeks

This week, Congress is considering two pieces of legislation relating to Iran. The first undermines a diplomatic solution with Iran and lowers the bar for war. The second authorizes a war of choice against Iran and begins military preparations for it. H.Res.568: Eliminating the Most Viable Alternative to War – The House is expected to vote on H.Res. 568. Read the resolution. Section (6) rejects any United States policy that would rely on efforts to contain a nuclear weapons-capable Iran. Section (7) urges the President to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability and opposition to any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to ...

U.S. Ambassador to Israel: Plan to Attack Iran “Ready” The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Daniel Shaprio, told a closed conference in Tel Aviv that the United States has completed preparations for a military strike on Iran. His comments were recorded by a reporter and aired on Israel’s Channel 2 TV on Wednesday night. Daniel Shaprio (center) sat on the NSC as senior director for the Middle East before Obama appointed him ambassador to Israel. “It would be preferable to resolve this diplomatically, and through the use of pressure, than to use military force,” Shapiro said. “But that does not mean that option isn’t available. Not just available, it’s ...

Syria and Iran in Focus

Syria and Iran in Focus by Stephen Lendman America's longstanding agenda targets both countries. Israel wants regional rivals removed. Washington wants independent regimes replaced by pro-Western puppet ones. All options are considered, including war. For months, saber rattling targeted Tehran. Multiple rounds of sanctions were imposed. Stiffer ones are considered. More on Iran below. For 15 months, Syria's been wracked by Western-generated violence. No end of conflict appears likely. Constitutional reform and democratic elections don't matter. Neither does majority pro-Assad support. Washington's comfortable dealing with democrats, despots, or anything in between so ...

(AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster) (Credit: AP) (updated below) There is substantial opposition in both Yemen and the West to the new U.S.-backed Yemeni President, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. Hadi was the long-time Vice President of the Yemeni dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh, and after Saleh finally stepped down last year, Hadi became President as part of an “election” in which he was the only ...

This Weekend's Extravaganza of Crapoganda on Iran's Nuclear Program By Nima Shirazi May 14, 2012 "Information Clearing House" -- Two news reports by major wire services this weekend demonstrate just how pervasive misinformation and propaganda are in the mainstream media when it comes to the Iranian nuclear issue. The first: Reuters reported this week that Catherine Ashton, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and chief nuclear negotiator for the P5+1, has high hopes for the new round of talks with Iran resuming May 23rd in Baghdad and will approach the meeting as a “serious set of discussions that can lead to ...

The Case of the Missing Terrorists

If there were any real terrorists, Jose Rodriguez would be dead. Who is Jose Rodriguez? He is the criminal who ran the CIA torture program. Most of his victims were not terrorists or even insurgents. Most were hapless individuals kidnapped by warlords and sold to the Americans as “terrorists” for the bounty paid. If Rodriguez’s identity was previously a secret, it is no more. He has been on CBS “60 Minutes” taking credit for torturing Muslims and using the information allegedly gained to kill leaders of al Qaeda. If terrorists were really the problem that Homeland Security, the FBI and CIA claim, Rodriguez’s name would be a struck through item on the ...

Fabricating Lies to Wage War on Iran

Fabricating Lies to Wage War on Iran by Stephen Lendman Turning Iran into a reliable pro-Western puppet state is a long-sought US goal. All options are considered, including war. Tactics include calling Iran a threat to world peace, falsely accusing Tehran of terrorist attacks, and fabricating lies about an alleged nuclear weapons program despite no corroborating evidence whatever. Focusing largely on defense and security issues, the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) advances US interests "to sustain American prominence and prosperity as a force for good in the world." It's closely connected to high level administration, congressional, ...

Waging Total War on Islam by Stephen Lendman When asked why he robbed banks, Willie Sutton said that's where the money is. Washington targets the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia because it's where most proved oil and gas reserves are. Waging war require enemies. Pretexts create them. Muslims are demonized as threats. They're portrayed as culturally inferior, dirty, lecherous, untrustworthy, religiously fanatical, and violent. Slanderous media commentaries suggest gun-totting terrorists threatening US interests. Fear is heightened. Strategically timed false flag terror plots make headlines. So do arrests of entrapped Muslims despite no evidence of crime or intent ...

Brookings: A Reliable Imperial Tool

Brookings: A Reliable Imperial Tool by Stephen Lendman Brookings calls itself a Washington-based NGO "conducting high-quality, independent research" to advance three goals: democracy, economic and social welfare for all, and a "more safe, prosperous and cooperative international system." In fact, it's a corporate financed imperial tool. It serves wealth and power. It deplores democracy, social welfare, and equal opportunity. It supports Washington's longstanding Syria and Iran regime change agenda. Doing so ignores rule of law principles. In June 2009, its report titled "Which Path to Persia? Options for a New American Strategy Toward Iran" was a ...

CIA Double Agent? CIA and British Intelligence Created Ruse Known as al-Qaeda

“The agent, who was in Yemen, was liaising with the CIA before handing the device over to intelligence services,” reports the Daily Mail. “The explosive device was supposed to be smuggled aboard an aircraft undetected and then detonated." It has been known for some time that British intelligence runs terrorist operations and protects key terrorist assets. In 2005, a terrorism expert and a former prosecutor for the Justice Department, John Loftus, revealed that the so-called mastermind of the 7/7 London bombings, Haroon Rashid Aswat, was a British intelligence asset. Aswat associate Abu Hamza al-Masri, an influential cleric at the notorious Finsbury Park mosque in ...

NATO Heads for Chicago by Stephen Lendman A $100 million NATO invasion is coming. Low intensity conflict may follow. The "City of Broad Shoulders" may get more than it bargained for. Nelson Algren once called Chicago the "City on the Make." NATO's May 20/21 "on the make" invasion isn't welcome. Chicago NATO.org announced an Obama-hosted "diplomatic summit." Thousands plan protests against it. The Coalition Against NATO/G8 War & Poverty issued a statement, saying: "The city has carried out a campaign to intimidate and vilify protesters, claiming that protests lead to violence. In fact, the main source of violence in the world ...

Another Foiled False Flag by Stephen Lendman Wikipedia defines false or black flags as "covert operations designed to deceive the public in such a way that the operations appear as though they are being carried out by other entities." "The name is derived from the military concept of flying false colors; that is: flying the flag of a country other than one’s own. False flag operations are not limited to war and counter-insurgency operations and can be used during peace-time." Big lies substitute for truth. Stories are fabricated. Media scoundrels promote them. At issue is heightening fear for planned policies. Pretexts are needed for militarism, imperial wars, ...

Top Republican Calls for Stepped-Up Interventionism in Latin America

The top Republican in Congress on Tuesday called for stepping up U.S. “engagement” and interventionism in Latin America in order to obstruct various bogeymen that pose no threat to America. “The best defense against an expansion of Iranian influence in Latin America – and against the destructive aspirations of international criminals in the region – is for the United States to double down on a policy of direct engagement,” U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said at the State Department. Boehner said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visits to Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and Ecuador in recent months “underscored the designs Iran ...

Obama, bin Laden, and Mitt

The partisan squabbling over the killing of Osama bin Laden is a typical election-year distraction, effectively squelching discussion of more important matters one year after the execution of the al-Qaeda chief executive. Aided by cable-TV talking heads, Americans are spending too much time speculating over whether presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney would have given the order to get bin Laden, and also issuing paeans to President Obama’s “courage.” (We have a strange notion of courage. Did Obama risk his own life? Of course not. He was safe in the White House Situation Room. Perhaps he “risked” his political career, but even that isn’t ...

US secretly, illegally releases top militant detainees in Afghanistan:

The United States has been illegally releasing high-level prisoners from a military detention center in Afghanistan in an attempt to bargain with the country’s insurgent groups, says a report. Over the past several years, the "strategic release" program has allowed US officials to use prisoners in the Parwan detention center as “bargaining chips” in secret negotiations with militant groups in Afghanistan’s restive provinces, the Washington Post reported on Monday. This is while the move is illegal under the “traditional legal system.” The prisoners, often militants “who would not be released under the traditional legal system for military ...

US troops' organ donations save lives in Europe

Since 2006, the organs of US troops have saved around 140 people in Europe, USA Today reports. The families of servicemembers who were killed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan agreed to donate their loved ones’ hearts, kidneys, lungs, livers and pancreases to patients in Europe. Wounded troops are transported to an Army medical center in Germany, where those who are brain dead are kept alive on a ventilator long enough to allow their families time to fly overseas for one last goodbye, the paper reports. It is at that point the military asks about organ donation. The organs are generally viable for 24 to 36 hours, and there’s not enough time to fly them back to the US, ...

Bin Laden's letter to me

Why was I named in alleged al-Qaida letters last week as a recipient for documents about 9/11? Al-Qaida was not founded by Osama bin Laden, as many wrongly believe, but in the mid-1980’s in Peshawar, Pakistan, by a revolutionary scholar, Sheik Abdullah Azzam. I know this because I interviewed Azzam numerous times at al-Qaida HQ in Peshawar while covering the anti-Soviet jihad in Afghanistan. Azzam set up al-Qaida, which means "the base" in Arabic, to help CIA and Saudi-financed Arab volunteers going to fight in Soviet-occupied Afghanistan. In those days, the west hailed them as "freedom fighters." In letters allegedly captured by US special forces from bin ...
