Preventing Peace to Wage War Post Date: 2012-04-25 04:01:56 by Stephen Lendman

Preventing Peace to Wage War by Stephen Lendman Obama plans more wars. The peace candidate can't get enough of them. Hawkishness defines his agenda. So does belligerently transforming independent regimes into client ones. The business of America is war. Permanent war is policy. Peace is abhorred. Preventing it is prioritized. So is controlling Eurasia's vast oil, gas, and other resources unchallenged. War profiteering depends on conflict. It's the American way. Post-WW II, it's been that way. One war leads to others. Proxy ones are waged. Sums spent are enormous. Post-9/11 alone, estimates run into the multi-trillions. A June Brown University Watson Institute for ...

NGOs Promote Wars for Profit by Stephen Lendman Like better known war profiteers, NGOs also cash in. A Centre for the Study of Interventionism (CSI) report discussed it. CSI challenges interventionist notions. Exponents believe "military violence" should enforce international law. "These claims stand in contrast to" non-interventionist principles. UN Charter provisions and other international law enunciate them. CSI challenges current practice. Its new report discussed Libya. It explains how lies promote war. It asked if "the case for R2P (responsibility to protect was) based on fraud." It wasn't on truth and international law. Its rage to fight ...

Media Scoundrels Promote War on Syria by Stephen Lendman Syria's a battle zone. Western generated violence is to blame, not Assad. America's media scoundrels claim otherwise. They want him ousted by any means, including war. An April 9 Wall Street Journal commentary said "Syrian government forces (keep) bombing and killing...." Assad "reneged on (his) promises to end the bloodshed." Washington "and its allies (are) doing little or nothing to depose (his) regime. (The) illusion of diplomatic progress serves as cover for the Assads of the world to do more killing. Your move, President Obama." Like all scoundrel media commentators, Journal ...

LONDON In the midst of the Taliban attacks in central Kabul on Sunday, a journalist called the British embassy for a comment. "I really don't know why they are doing this," said the exasperated diplomat who answered the phone. "We'll be out of here in two years' time. All they have to do is wait." The official line is that by two years from now, when U.S. and NATO forces leave Afghanistan, the regime they installed will be able to stay in power without foreign support. The British diplomat clearly didn't believe that, and neither do most other foreign observers. However, Gen. John Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force, ...

Two US-led soldiers serving with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) have been killed in a bomb blast in eastern Afghanistan, Press TV reports. The ISAF said in a Monday statement that the foreign troopers lost their lives on Monday after they hit an improvised explosive device (IED). The military force did not reveal the nationality of the soldiers or the exact location of the incident. However, most of the foreign troops in the eastern part of the war-torn country are American. According to the icasualties.org website, at least 120 US-led troops have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year. The rising number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused ...
Security Council Authorizes 300 Syrian Monitors Post Date: 2012-04-22 04:10:35 by Stephen Lendman

Security Council Authorizes 300 Syrian Monitors by Stephen Lendman On April 21, the Security Council unanimously adopted a Russian/EU resolution. It calls for deploying up to 300 unarmed military Syrian observers for three months. Russia pushed hard for compromise language. An initial US urged EU draft was one-sided. A provision Moscow rejected involved invoking Article 41 of the UN Charter. It states: "The Security Council may decide what measures not involving the use of armed force are to be employed to give effect to its decisions, and it may call upon the Members of the United Nations to apply such measures." "These may include complete or partial interruption of ...

USA PATRIOT Act Kept Somalia Starving Post Date: 2012-04-21 09:02:55 by Ada

When war-torn Somalia was also ravaged by a drought-induced famine last year, which killed tens of thousands and displaced over a million people, international media was quick to blame the Islamist al-Shabaab for blocking humanitarian assistance from reaching its zone of control in southern Somalia. But according to Ken Menkhaus, professor of Political Science at Davidson College in North Carolina, the United States counter-terrorism laws played an equally central role in obstructing assistance from reaching famine victims in desperate need of aid. Speaking in a seminar in Helsinki, Finland on Wednesday, organized by the Department of the Study of Religions at Helsinki University, ...
Karzai demands ‘accelerated’ US withdrawal Post Date: 2012-04-21 00:21:38 by Tatarewicz

In response to newly published photos of U.S. troops happily manipulating the remains of dead Afghans, President Hamid Karzai said Thursday that an accelerated withdrawal of Western troops must take place in order to avoid such inhumane and provocative acts. In a statement issued by presidential palace less than 24 hours after the Los Angeles Times released the images, Karzai demanded an accelerated and full transition of security responsibilities to Afghan forces, so Afghanistan can take over its own destiny, and thus no such things can be repeated by the foreign forces in Afghanistan. The release controversy comes at a time when the Obama administration is losing ...

Activist Sheehan says she has court date today for refusing to pay taxes Anti-war crusader Cindy Sheehan said she will appear in federal court today to defend her decision not to pay taxes. "I refuse to fund the empire's crimes and wars," Sheehan said in a press release. "I feel a certain amount of guilt that my taxes were used to murder my own son." Sheehan, 54, gained fame as an anti-war activist after her son Casey was killed in the Iraq war. Her website says that she has been asked to appear in court by the U.S. Attorney on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service. She also called for a rally in conjunction with a news conference at 10:30 a.m. at the federal ...
American Decline: What the Foreign Policy Elite Really Fear Post Date: 2012-04-19 17:34:06 by F.A. Hayek Fan

There is a fixation in elite foreign policy circles these days to speculate on the impending decline of Americas global economic and military hegemony and to lament that decline as the dangerous end to international order. Without global American dominance, goes the thinking, lawless competition and chaos will rule. Former Carter administration national security advisor Zbigniew Brzezinskis latest book Strategic Vision goes through this lament. He worries that, absent U.S. hegemony, regional powers will be less restrained. Russia will bully tiny Caucasian states like Georgia; China will bully Taiwan; North Korea will threaten South Korea; diminished unilateral support for ...
ACLU Files FOIA for Obama’s Mass Murder Missile Strike in Yemen (Obama: the Serial-Killer-in-Chief) Post Date: 2012-04-19 16:33:48 by F.A. Hayek Fan

Today the ACLU and the Center for Constitutional Rights filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking information about a horrific U.S. missile strike that killed dozens of civilians in Yemen. This was the Obama administrations first known missile strike in Yemen, carried out with one or more cruise missiles launched from an American warship or submarine on December 17, 2009. The U.S. military reportedly used cluster bombs, killing at least 41 people in the remote mountain village of al-Majalah in Yemens Abyan province. The government was purportedly targeting militants, but those killed include at least 21 children and 14 women. Entire families were wiped out. ...
America's Lost War Post Date: 2012-04-18 04:01:24 by Stephen Lendman

America's Lost War by Stephen Lendman America's Afghan war is lost and illegal. The Bush administration got no Security Council authorization or congressional declaration of war. International law expert Francis Boyle said Congress passed a War Powers Resolution Authorization. Doing so gave Bush "blank check" power "to use military force against any individual, organization, or state" at his discretion. International and constitutional law be damned. Waging war on Afghanistan "is clearly illegal. It constitutes armed aggression. It is creating a humanitarian catastrophe for the people of Afghanistan." It's also a lost cause. Pentagon commanders ...

US prepares for what could be last major Afghan offensive Post Date: 2012-04-17 05:27:07 by Tatarewicz

For Taliban militants and U.S. strategists alike, all roads in this impoverished country of mountain passes, arid deserts and nearly impassable goat tracks lead to this ancient capital of 3 million people nestled in a high and narrow valley. The Taliban made their intentions clear over the weekend, mounting spectacular coordinated attacks that spawned an 18-hour battle with Afghan and NATO forces. And now, the U.S. is gearing up for what may be the last major American-run offensive of the war a bid to secure the approaches to the city. While bombings and shootings elsewhere in Afghanistan receive relatively little attention, attacks in the capital alarm the general population, ...

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says Australia will withdraw its troops from Afghanistan earlier than planned. Ms Gillard made the announcement in a speech in Canberra, and ahead of a key Nato conference on Afghanistan in Chicago next month. She said troops would begin pulling out this year and most would be home by the end of 2013 - an election year in Australia. Most international troops are due to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Nato is in the process of handing over security control to local forces - some strategically important areas of the south and east have already been transferred to Afghan forces. There are currently about 130,000 Nato troops serving in Afghanistan from 50 ...
Beating Up on North Korea and Iran Post Date: 2012-04-17 04:05:34 by Stephen Lendman

Beating Up on North Korea and Iran by Stephen Lendman Washington needs enemies. When none exist, they're created. North Korea and Iran are prime targets. Neither poses threats. Yet they faced decades of false accusations. Like other nations, both reject domination. They want their sovereignty respected. They seek normalized relations with regional neighbors and the West. America's imperial ambitions block them. Threats follow. Besides longstanding plans to replace independent regimes with client ones, Washington needs enemies as punching bags. At issue is keeping fear heightened to wage imperial wars on humanity. One country after another is ravaged. Syria's next, then ...

The Rise of the Killer Drones: How America Goes to War in Secret An inside look at how killing by remote control has changed the way we fight. By Michael Hastings April 15, 2012 -- One day in late November, an unmanned aerial vehicle lifted off from Shindand Air Base in western Afghanistan, heading 75 miles toward the border with Iran. The drone's mission: to spy on Tehran's nuclear program, as well as any insurgent activities the Iranians might be supporting in Afghanistan. With an estimated price tag of $6 million, the drone was the product of more than 15 years of research and development, starting with a shadowy project called DarkStar overseen by Lockheed Martin. The first ...

Worrisome Security Council Syrian Resolution by Stephen Lendman On April 14, the Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 2042. The UN News Centre headlined, "Syria: Security Council authorizes deployment of advance military observer team," saying: The Security Council authorized sending "an advance team of up to 30 unarmed military observers to Syria to report on the implementation of a full cessation of armed violence, pending the deployment of a United Nations supervision mission tasked with monitoring the ceasefire." While calling on all sides to end violence and guarantee the safety and free movement of observers, once again fingers pointed mainly the ...

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan: The spiteful expressions of Rayon Crocker Recently the press statement of the American ambassador Mr. Rayon Crocker has increased doubts about the American policies regarding Afghanistan and the region. He tried to create the atmosphere of doubt and fear and to pave the road for their colonial ambitions. He said that if the foreign forces make haste in leaving Afghanistan, another incident like 9/11 may take place and this time it might not be in New York and Washington but somewhere in Europe. The point of consideration is how he can exactly say that this time the target may not be American but some European country. Another point is that Mr. Crocker ...
