"Because of the situation, we will be looking at giving direct block contracts to countries ready to come and work in the country because we want to increase production," he said. ...

Washington's UN War Resolution on Libya

Washington's UN War Resolution on Libya - by Stephen Lendman On March 18, Washington bullied Security Council members to approve Resolution 1973, a measure authorizing war on Libya. The 10 - 0 vote included five abstentions from China, Russia, Germany, Brazil and India, objecting to sweeping terms, including wide latitude for belligerence on bogus "humanitarian" grounds. In fact, it's to replace one despot with another, perhaps assassinate Gaddafi, colonize Libya, control its oil, gas and other resources, exploit its people, privatize its state industries under Western control, establish new US bases, use them for greater regional control, and perhaps balkanize the ...

The six CF-18 fighter jets Canada is sending to help enforce the new United Nations no-fly zone over Libya could leave as early as Friday to join an assembling international force, and will be based out of Southern Europe, possibly Italy. Ottawa will also send between 120 and 200 military personnel to support the planes. The Libyan assignment gives the Harper government a chance to demonstrate why Canada needs top-notch fighter jets. The Tories are under fire for committing an estimated $15-billion or more to purchase new F-35 stealth fighter, expected to arrive starting in 2016 or 2017. Although they regularly patrol North American skies, Canada’s CF-18 Hornets last saw combat ...

By BABAR DOGAR, Associated Press Babar Dogar, Associated Press – 1 hr 3 mins ago LAHORE, Pakistan – An American CIA contractor detained on suspicion of murder was released on Wednesday after families of the two Pakistanis he killed were given "blood money" and the case was dropped, Pakistani officials said. The killings and detention of Raymond Allen Davis had strained ties between Pakistan and the United States and added to anti-America sentiment. Karzai visited Kunar on Saturday morning to personally express condolences to the families of nine children who were killed by US air attacks on March 1. troops are employing a controversial new tactic of blowing up houses and in some cases razing Afghan villages they believe have been mined by the Taliban. The tactic, which has evolved over the past few months, has provoked unease among human rights groups and even among some soldiers carrying out the destruction but is understood to have been approved by General David Petraeus, the overall Nato commander, in December - even though it appears at odds with rules of engagement he outlined last year that urged his troops to "treat the Afghan people and their property with respect". Estimates suggest that hundreds of Afghan homes, which typically house dozens of people in extended ...

US national intelligence director has predicted embattled Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi will defeat the rebels challenging his grip on power. James Clapper told the US Senate that Col Gaddafi's superior military force would prevail over the long term. And Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the US would not act in Libya without international authorisation. Meanwhile, Libyan rebels are fleeing the port of Ras Lanuf after sustained attacks by Col Gaddafi's forces. In Washington, Mr Clapper, who is the top intelligence adviser to US President Barack Obama, told the Senate he saw no evidence Col Gaddafi would step down from power and warned his military was stronger than had ...

Pack Journalism Promotes War on Libya - by Stephen Lendman America's major media never met an imperial war it didn't love and promote, never mind how lawless, mindless, destructive and counterproductive. Despite Washington already bogged down in two losing ones, Obama's heading for another on Libya, the media pack in the lead clamoring for it, perhaps by "shock and awe," supplemented by special forces death squads on the ground recruiting, inciting, and arming opposition elements. Notably favoring intervention, a New York Times February 24 editorial headlined, "Stopping Qaffafi," saying: Unless he's stopped, he'll "slaughter hundreds or even ...

US Gov't Attorneys: Providing a List of Charges to Those on Terror Lists 'Extremely Burdensome'

Defense lawyers for organizations on the U.S. government's "terror list" are frustrated fighting the designation, and seizure of assets in many cases, because the government claims it is too tedious to give an explanation of the charges. "It would be extremely burdensome to give a list of charges," said the government's attorney, Douglas Letter, the Associated Press reported today: Attorneys for the U.S. government told a federal appeals court Wednesday that informing each person and organization listed as a global terrorist of the reasons they are so designated would be too much work. They made the argument in a case involving the government's seizure of ...

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said from Afghanistan on Monday that the U.S. military is well positioned to start withdrawing some troops in July, though he said a U.S. presence may remain in the country past the 2014 deadline to transfer security control to local forces. Gates arrived in Afghanistan on Monday on an unannounced trip to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and visit the country's restive eastern and southern provinces to assess conditions as he decides how many troops to withdraw in July. Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told reporters en route to Afghanistan that "there are more talks to take place and more work to be done once [Gates] is home," before any ...

America's War on Libya - by Stephen Lendman Since WW II alone, America waged direct and proxy wars against Korea, Southeast Asia, Central and South American countries, African ones, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, and now Egypt and Libya. One down, one to go, besides dozens of attempted and successful coups, as well as numerous other interventions to control world markets, resources and people. Imperial America doesn't sleep. It plots, deciding where next to strike. Despite popular passion for democratic change, uprisings in Egypt and Libya were externally orchestrated, funded and armed by Washington to replace one despot with another. Democracy won't be tolerated. It's ...

You see them here and there, usually in countries where they can afford to live, barely—Thailand, Cambodia, Mexico. They are the Pentagon’s throwaways. There is the old guy, old now anyway, who took several rounds in one of our previous pointless wars, one in Asia, and ended in constant irremediable pain. Little was, or is, visibly wrong with him. Nerve damage is hard to see. Some parts don’t move as well as they ought, but it’s nothing he couldn’t live with. So he gets a small disability pension and lives on ferocious pain killers, always. They make his mind gauzy and when he gets important letters from the government, such as those to see whether he is still ...

Updated: 3/3/2011, 7:45 pm | The head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive on Thursday night ordered an outside evaluation of his agency's efforts to combat Mexican gun trafficking following a Center for Public Integrity report that ATF supervisors allowed more than 1,700 guns to flow to straw buyers with the expectation the weapons might cross the border and even be used in crimes. The Center’s story quoted an ATF agent, John Dodson, who blew the whistle on the operation after his supervisors repeatedly cast aside frontline agents’ concerns that the weapons ATF let “walk” might be deployed in crimes on both sides of the border.
