Blowback, Provocation, and Perpetual War

No man is a hypocrite in his pleasures, Dr. Johnson informs us. In a somewhat similar vein, the Regime's post-9/11 "counter-terrorism" stings have avoided the official fiction that Muslim terrorism is inspired by a hatred for our "freedom." The preferred bait to lure marginalized Muslims -- many of whom have little commitment to the faith, no detectable terrorism-related skills, and abundant personal problems -- is outrage over the Regime's imperial foreign policy. As Scott Horton of the invaluable Antiwar Radio has pointed out, the scripted patter of federal provocateurs doesn't focus on America's refusal to submit to Sharia, or our decadent popular ...

Nine years on, 9/11 jury is still out

On the ninth anniversary of the worst terror attacks to strike the US mainland, many questions remain unanswered, not least of all concerning the true identities of the perpetrators. Three days after the events of 9/11 came crashing into our living rooms, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported the identities of the hijackers of the four US commercial aircraft. This was certainly record time for cracking the biggest crime case of modern times. However, the FBI may have jumped the gun, so to speak, on rushing to identify the perpetrators so quickly. As things turned out, this would be no small oversight – and even a bit of an embarrassment – since several of the accused ...

Journalist: Women raped at Abu Ghraib were later ‘honor killed’ By Daniel Tencer Saturday, September 11th, 2010 -- 10:24 pm Some women who were raped at the US's Abu Ghraib prison facility in Iraq were later "honor killed" by their families, says a Jordanian reporter who writes on women's issues. "In Abu Ghraib, women were tortured by the Americans much more than the men," Lima Nabil told The Independent. "One woman said she witnessed five girls being raped. Most of the women in the prison were raped – some of them left prison pregnant. Families killed some of these women – because of the shame." Nabil, who has reported ...

The Talibanization of America Viewed from Pakistan, the rise of U.S. Islamophobia looks depressingly familiar.

The Talibanization of America Viewed from Pakistan, the rise of U.S. Islamophobia looks depressingly familiar. BY MOSHARRAF ZAIDI | SEPTEMBER 10, 2010 One of the lessons from the Quran-burning circus in Florida, whether it ever actually takes place or not, is that the labels we use to make sense of the world are becoming more and more complex. This is bad news. Labels are supposed to simplify life, not make it more complicated. Nine years to the day since al Qaeda attacked New York City, murdered nearly 3,000 people, and changed the world we live in, our labels seem to be leading us down some strange paths. Because nothing crazy has happened in Florida for almost 20 whole minutes, an Orlando police team decided that the best way to handle a plush toy pony left in a public park was to skip the "lost and found" hassle and just blow it up. The park is immediately adjacent to Waterbridge Elementary School, which police apparently did not consider calling to ask if anyone had lost their toy horse. Fortunately, the Orlando bomb squad waited for camera crews to arrive, so we can all enjoy the exploding toy horse that will surely haunt the children of Waterbridge for many years to come. The Orlando Sentinel's Bianca Prieto reports, "The FurReal pony, an expensive, life-like toy, ...

Petraeus Spins the Afghan War Mess by Barbara Koeppel A few weeks ago, Gen. David Petraeus pulled off a flawless remake of Gen. William Westmoreland's 1967 performance in which the Vietnam War commander detected "light at the end of the tunnel" - just months before the Viet Cong launched its Tet offensive, proving the resistance was very much alive and well. This time, the geography is Afghanistan. But Gen. Petraeus's upbeat claims on NBC's "Meet the Press" and elsewhere - that U.S. and NATO troops have ousted some Taliban from conflicted areas, helped reform the corrupt Afghan government, and trained Afghan security forces to fight on their own - are ...

Troops Popping Anxiety, Depression Meds Like Never Before * By Katie Drummond Email Author * September 7, 2010 | * 4:00 pm | * Categories: Military Life * An untold number of active-duty troops and recent veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are coming home with mental health conditions inflicted during service — and their spouses and children are suffering too. Now, with solid data slowly emerging from the nearly decade-long wars, the severity of the crisis is starting to show. The use of psychiatric medications among 18 to 34-year-olds (both troops and their spouses) soared by 42 percent between 2005 and 2009, Army Times is reporting. Antidepressants were the most ...

Pat Buchanan Is Wrong About Islam

Much hoorah, there is, over the mosque that may or may not be built in New York. I don’t give a tinker’s damn (whatever precisely that may be; I presume that tinkers’ oaths were thought more efficacious than others) whether they build it or not. The matter does however put to rest for me any hope of rationality in human affairs. This, I grant, could be accomplished with a very small bed. At this writing, the government’s war for oil and AIPAC has more or less solidly metamorphosed, among the rubes at least, into a war against Islam. Men of thunder and portent peddle the notion like starving encyclopedia salesmen. No less a political howitzer than Pat Buchanan says that ...

Panic in Afghanistan: The Angry Run on Kabul Bank By Jason Motlagh / Kabul Monday, Sep. 06, 2010 You can see the anxiety over the fate of Afghanistan's economy just by looking at the huge line of depositors gathered furiously outside the headquarters of Kabul Bank in the downtown section of the capital. Hundreds thronged the sidewalks Sunday, spilling into a street wreathed in newly laid coils of concertina wire. Armed security guards tried in vain to tamp down tempers that flared despite reports of a possible bailout being orchestrated by the government with the help of U.S. experts. Occasional scuffles broke out between police and nervous depositors, many of whom arrived in the ...

Strategy institute challenges idea that troops are needed in Afghanistan to stop export of terrorism to west The threat posed by al-Qaida and the Taliban is exaggerated and the western-led counter-insurgency campaign in Afghanistan risks becoming a "long, drawn-out disaster", one of the world's leading security thinktanks warned today. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the west's counter-insurgency strategy has "ballooned" out of proportion to the original aim of preventing al-Qaida from mounting terrorist attacks there, and must be replaced by a less ambitious but more sensible policy of "containment and ...

America's Grand Strategy: Militarizing Space - by Stephen Lendman On January 3, 2001, the UN General Assembly's Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space Resolution A/55/32 said: "The exploration and use of outer space....shall be for peaceful purposes and be carried out for the benefit and in the interest of all countries, irrespective of their degree of economic or scientific development. (The) prevention of an arms race in outer space would avert a grave danger for international peace and security." Over 140 nations agreed. Only two declined support, both abstaining - America and Israel. On August 9, 1996, in Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine, then ...
