German troops in Afghanistan call on Angela Merkel to explain why they're at war Post Date: 2010-04-22 06:23:12 by Ada

Under pressure: German troops are calling on Chancellor Angela Merkel to tell them why they're at war in Afghanistan German soldiers are wearing their hearts on their sleeves - in the form of a badge that protests their country's involvement in the war in Afghanistan. Some troops have taken to wearing the cloth accessory that states - ironically - 'I fight for Merkel' in a bid to persuade the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to explain exactly what they are fighting and dying for. Four more troops were killed, and five badly injured, in Afghanistan last week. Seven soldiers have died there so far this month, bringing the total to 43 in all since they were first deployed ...

Kanan48 An Echo for the Rational Views Afghanistan War A Waste of Blood and Treasure. By Abdul-Majid Jaffry 2010/04/19 by kanan48 Via: Media Monitors Network. As all wars are not morally objectionable, not all wars are permissible. However, even in the situation where use of force becomes permissible, there are certain essential and universally accepted principles that need to be abided. First, war must be the last resort after all other peaceful means to resolve the conflict have failed. Second, the use of force must be for just cause; for example, to evict an invading and occupying force. Third, it must have a reasonable likelihood of success; death and destruction ...

US Troops See ‘Expanded Role’ in Pakistan Post Date: 2010-04-19 14:55:10 by Horse

Despite an official prohibition at taking any part in Pakistans assorted military offensives, the US Special Forces in the nation have continued to expand the definition of training operations until now they are overseeing the combat in several areas. The training mission was originally supposed to be so limited that they werent supposed to even train troops directly, they were supposed to train Pakistani trainers who would pass the information along to the paramilitary forces in FATA. Even this was controversial at the time. But now, the US troops are taking part in hold and build operations in FATA, coordinating the operations of the various Pakistani ...

This past week's Wikileaks release of footage showing the deaths of more than a dozen Iraqis in the summer of 2007 has generated a great deal of desperately needed public dialogue in regard to the reality of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as opposed to the perception of the wars presented to us by the corporate media. For more than three months, another story has been unravelling, the implications of which are far more startling than the information uncovered by Wikileaks. True to form - the corporate media's coverage of this event has an inverse relationship to its apparent gravity, meaning the coverage has been about zero. Since the last days of December, the details of this ...
Iran calls for UN probe into reasons US is in Iraq and Afghanistan Post Date: 2010-04-16 03:23:41 by Tatarewicz

- Iran has urged the United Nations to undertake a probe to find out the actual reasons for the U.S.-led Western military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.N. Secretary- General's office said on Tuesday. Ban ki-Moon's office confirmed that it had received a letter from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urging the world body to set up a fact-finding team for the purpose, but declined comment. Ahmadinejad sought to portray the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan against a historical backdrop saying invasions only served to victimize people in the region and alleged that U.S. and NATO tactics used in fighting terrorism were a resounding failure. Bilateral ties ...

Its always better not to fight alone. Presumably thats why Washington has paid small states to fight on Americas behalf. Alas, its a wasteful policy which has encouraged countries to neglect their own defense. The Obama administration is continuing to expand U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Yet the military is stretched: American personnel have been in battle and on occupation duty continually since late 2001. Military outlays run roughly $700 billion and, adjusted for inflation, exceed spending at any point during the Korean, Vietnam and Cold Wars. Moreover, international support for Americas wars is ebbing. Although Washington enjoyed more backing for attacking ...

As Henry Kissinger once rightly observed, it is often more dangerous being Americas ally than its enemy. Watching Washingtons growing anger at Afghan president Hamid Karzai, one recalls the unhappy endings of such former US allies as South Vietnams Diem, Irans Shah, Indonesias Suharto, Nicaraguas Somoza, and Pakistans Zia ul-Haq. Washington has been loudly hinting it would like to oust Karzai, but so far it has not managed to identify a suitable replacement who commands any respect or tribal support from Afghans. The Obama administration flirted with trying to replace Karzai by the North Alliance chief, Abdullah Abdullah, but he had too many ...

KABUL, Afghanistan American troops raked a large passenger bus with gunfire near Kandahar on Monday morning, killing and wounding civilians, and igniting angry anti-American demonstrations in a city where winning over Afghan support is pivotal to the war effort. Allauddin Khan/Associated Press Afghan police officers and protesters stood near a bus that was fired upon by American troops. The shooting, which killed as many as five civilians and wounded 18, occurred on the eve of the most important offensive of the war. In coming weeks thousands of American, NATO and Afghan troops are expected to try to take control of the Kandahar region, the spiritual home of the Taliban. It was ...

The short version of an old joke about U.S. defense spending goes like this: An overweight nuclear submarine skipper baffles the congressional defense appropriations subcommittees with a line of technical gobbledygook Einstein wouldnt understand, and the subcommittees give the Navy whatever it wants. A short, bald fighter pilot feeds the subcommittees a ration of dwarfed egotism and threatens to defile their daughters, and the subcommittees give the Air Force whatever it wants. Then a fit, ruggedly handsome infantry officer tells the subcommittees in modest, straightforward language what he needs to win the wars they send him off to fight, and the subcommittees give the Army nothing. ...

Its war you can watch on video, much like a movie, except the victims really die and the killers really murder. If you watch and listen to the entire recording of the July 12, 2007 helicopter attack on a group of Iraqi civilians, including two Reuters employees, you will hear the repeated use of military call signs, but towards the end, you hear an exasperated voice sharing an aside with "Kyle." Its Grand Theft Auto meets Reno 911 except it isnt. One is entertained by GTA and the antics of incompetent policepeople. One is simply floored by what our soldiers are doing, and how they are doing it. In their defense, they say, "This is war." Except, ...

Chad was a Marine Scout Sniper who served two tours in Iraq. Upon being honorably discharged as a Sgt. in 2007, he summoned the courage to ask for therapy in dealing with the images and emotions that gnawed on him from being dropped into combat. Like so many of his peers, therapy was bypassed for meds. Similar to fighting in Fallujah and Ramadi, he never expected that his life would be threatened by psychiatric drugs. After a single day of following doctors orders, Chad felt things would be looking up. He was happy, seemed to be more cognizant, and the weight of daily struggles was lifted. But, as he describes it, things quickly ...

Obama's Brave Nuke World - by Stephen Lendman At the same time the Pentagon issued its new Nuclear Posture Review, Obama officially ordered the murder of a US citizen, Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki - accused of terrorism and an Al Qaeda connection without evidence. Earlier on February 4, Washington Post writer Ellen Nakashima headlined, "Intelligence chief acknowledges US may target Americans involved in terrorism," saying: "Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair acknowledged (February 3 in testimony to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence) that government agencies (specifically CIA operatives and Special Forces death squads) may kill US ...
George W. Bush 'knew Guantánamo prisoners were innocent' Post Date: 2010-04-09 06:23:41 by Ada

George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld covered up that hundreds of innocent men were sent to the Guantánamo Bay prison camp because they feared that releasing them would harm the push for war in Iraq and the broader War on Terror, according to a new document obtained by The Times. The accusations were made by Lawrence Wilkerson, a top aide to Colin Powell, the former Republican Secretary of State, in a signed declaration to support a lawsuit filed by a Guantánamo detainee. It is the first time that such allegations have been made by a senior member of the Bush Administration. Colonel Wilkerson, who was General Powells chief of staff when he ran the State ...
Ramsey Clark heads international commision on Bush War Crimes Post Date: 2010-04-09 03:56:13 by Tatarewicz

On April 3, at a meeting of over 150 lawyers, legal scholars and human rights campaigners, Ramsey Clark, founder of Indict Bush Now, was chosen to be the chairperson of an international campaign to investigate war crimes committed by officials from the Bush administration. Representatives at the meeting held in Beirut, Lebanon, came from all over the world. The campaign will investigate the lies, deceit and manipulation leading up to the Iraq war; the conduct of the war itself against an essentially defenseless country; and the horrors of the continued occupation. Lawyers and judges in several countries are exploring prosecution. Ramsey Clark emphasized that it is the imperative ...

U.S. military goes hungry in Afghanistan The United States Military is in the midst of a troop surge in Afghanistan, but the surge has caused the ratio of resources to troops to widen. Many American Forward Operating Bases are experiencing food and water shortages. Sgt. Hill, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, has been in Afghanistan only a few months as part of the new troop surge into the country. The troops are mainly focused on training and promoting the Afghanistan army and police force. The training is the United States' attempt to "teach a man to fish," in the security department of the ever turbulent country, a country which is still undecided if it ...

Indoctrinating Israeli Youths to Be Warriors - by Stephen Lendman The modern roots go back to Zionism's founding at the First Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland in 1897, its program being: "Establishing for the Jewish people a publicly and legally assured home in Eretz Yisrael." Five decades later, it was accomplished by dispossessing indigenous Palestinians, denying them the right to their land, creating a new Jewish identity, legitimizing Jews as rightful owners, and using superior military force to assure it against defenseless civilians, no match against their powerful adversary. Leading up to and after its War of Independence, Israel stayed politically and ...

The following questions are intended to clarify whos to blame for the Iraq war. 1. Ahmed Chalabi, the source of much of the false intelligence about Iraqi ...

A Sinking Ship of State Tony Blankley Wednesday, April 07, 2010 Last summer, President Obama spent several months publicly anguishing over what he would or wouldn't do in Afghanistan. Finally, he agreed to ramp up troop levels but warned that he intended to start getting American troops out in 18 months. After anguishing in several columns over the president's anguishing, I concluded in November 2009: "If the Taliban and al Qaeda retake Afghanistan, the world (and America) will have hell to pay for the consequences. But this president and this White House do not have it in them to lead our troops to victory in Afghanistan. So they shouldn't try. The price will be high for ...
'The Pentagon is spying on us,' claims whistleblower website Wikileaks after leaking top secret documents Post Date: 2010-04-07 08:30:57 by GreyLmist

The Pentagon has been accused of spying on a whistleblower website that specialises in leaking top secret documents. The US Army has already deemed Wikileaks a security threat to military operations. That much is known because the online muckrakers posted the classified 2008 report from the Army Counterintelligence Center on its own site earlier this month. [sic] Leaks that might have particularly infuriated the US Defence Department included the sites publication in 2007 of almost the entire order of battle for American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
