"If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." Sun Tzu The New York Times reports that those wily guerillas in Afghanistan are throwing a curve ball at us. Theyre fighting back, the so-and-sos, and it sounds like they know how to do it. "In Iraq, they hit you and run," says one Marine who served three combat tours in Iraqs deadly Anbar province. "But these guys stick around and maneuver on you." "One force will put enough fire down so you have to keep your heads down, then another force will maneuver around to your side to try to kill you," says another Marine. "Thats the same thing we ...
Is America building a purely military economy? Post Date: 2009-08-03 07:18:19 by High Hopes

A recent article in the New York Times, entitled "Why a Recovery May Still Feel Like a Recession," has buried in it some startling statistics about the direction of the US economy. Floyd Norris' article points out that durable-goods shipments -- a basic measure of industrial production -- "fell by more than 20 percent during this recession, and would have declined further were it not for increased production of weapons." The use of the military-industrial complex as a quick, if dubious, way of jump-starting the economy is nothing new, but what is amazing is the divergence between the military economy and the civilian economy, as shown by this New York Times chart. ...

U.S. troops killed in deadliest month of Afghan war Post Date: 2009-07-31 10:57:29 by christine

KABUL (Reuters) - A U.S. service member was killed as the deadliest month for foreign troops in the Afghanistan war drew to a close, the U.S. military said on Friday, with commanders vowing to continue the fight despite the toll. The death in southern Afghanistan brought to 40 the number of U.S. troops killed in July, by far the heaviest monthly toll in the 8-year-old war. The worst previous month for U.S. forces was in September 2008, when 26 were killed. The latest death occurred in a firefight with insurgents in southern Afghanistan on Thursday, the U.S. military said, without giving further details. At least 70 foreign troops have been killed in July. Britain has suffered its worst ...
US surgeons drafted in as British medics exhausted by casualty surge Post Date: 2009-07-31 04:35:06 by noone222

The surge in British casualties in Afghanistan has left military surgeons so exhausted that a US surgical team has been drafted in to help. The British doctors have also been overwhelmed with casualties from other nations, including US Marines, Afghan troops and civilians. Extra British plastic surgeons have had to be sent to the field hospital at Camp Bastion in central Helmand along with additional X-ray technicians and specialist nurses. The Ministry of Defence revealed that 57 soldiers had been wounded in action in the first two weeks of this month, the worst casualty figure since British troops deployed to Helmand province in 2006. The previous highest toll of those injured, 46, was ...

Kampala Ugandans who want a career in the United States military, can sign up at the annual convention of the Uganda North American Association, organisers say. American military recruiters will set up a booth at this year's UNAA convention in Orlando, Florida, and seek out professional Ugandans, said Lt. Frank Musisi, himself an officer in the US Army. Lt. Musisi, who comes from Kalangala District on Lake Victoria, is the current president of UNAA. He said the US military would also advise Ugandans on the "proper channels" to follow in enlisting. The announcement, which is also on the UNAA website (www.unaa.net), is set to cause a rush to this year's convention ...
US military adviser: 'We now smell bad to the Iraqi nose' (At Last A Non Delusional Military Memo) Post Date: 2009-07-30 19:33:02 by tom007

US military adviser: 'We now smell bad to the Iraqi nose' The New York Times has a report on a devastating memo written by a senior military official, although their headline might be a little misleading to some. Since it suggests that he recommend US troops should leave immediately, not in a year. Michael R. Gordon writes, "A senior American military adviser in Baghdad has concluded in an unusually blunt memo that the Iraqi forces suffer from deeply entrenched deficiencies but are now capable of protecting the Iraqi government, and that it is time for the U.S. to declare victory and go home, in the article entitled "U.S. Advisers Blunt Memo on Iraq: ...
Gates Says `Modest Acceleration' in U.S. Troop Pullout From Iraq Possible Post Date: 2009-07-29 12:37:10 by Brian S

July 29 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. is considering speeding up its withdrawal of troops from Iraq because the transition to local control is going better than expected, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said. I think there is at least some chance of a modest acceleration because of the way General Odierno sees things going, Gates told reporters traveling with him today as he left Iraq. General Ray Odierno is the top U.S. commander in Iraq. The faster pullback might occur before general elections in January, Gates said as he finished a trip to review military progress in Iraq since U.S. forces pulled back from urban areas on June 30. President Barack Obama is counting on ...
U.S. military to stop releasing militant death tolls in Afghanistan Post Date: 2009-07-28 18:09:09 by christine

Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan -- Military officials in Afghanistan have ordered a halt to the practice of releasing the number of militants killed in fighting with American-led forces as part of an overall strategy shift and an effort to portray to the Afghan people a different U.S. approach to the war. The decision has triggered a quiet but fierce debate among military officers, one with echoes of the U.S. experience in Vietnam, when military officials routinely exaggerated body counts and used them as a measure of success -- a practice that proved counterproductive. Under the new order, issued by Rear Adm. Gregory J. Smith, the military will not release specifics on how many ...

What imperialist war produces Iraq veterans charged with murder and other crimes By David Walsh July 28, 2009 The atrocities US troops are committing in Iraq and Afghanistan, the inevitable product of neo-colonial war and occupation, are transforming a section of returning veterans into a genuine menace to society. Recent reports, for example, reveal that 10 members of one unit alone, based at the US Armys Fort Carsonnear Colorado Springs, Coloradohave been charged with murder, attempted murder or manslaughter since 2006. The murder rate among the 3,500 members of what is now the 4th Infantry Divisions 4th Brigade Combat Team from the fall of 2007 to the fall of ...
Washington Post calls for Bush-Cheney torture investigation Post Date: 2009-07-28 07:44:17 by Tatarewicz

Washington Post's lead editorial calls for Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special prosecutor to "look at the facts and apply the law" for the violent deaths of (terrorism) detainees in US custody. Once the prosecution opens it will lead to the doorstep of Dick Cheney and George W. Bush. It was they who ordered the torture, secret assassination teams, the breathtaking massive spying operation against the American people and, most importantly, launching a war of aggression in Iraq that led to the deaths of nearly one million people at a cost of nearly $2-trillion. POSTER COMMENT: This call by a (pro-Israel) MSM has gotten Ramsey Clark's team all excited. But the ...

Al Jazeera has obtained a copy of the book, which further indicates that Mullah Omar, the movement's leader, wants to centralise its operations. The book, with 13 chapters and 67 articles, lays out what one of the most secretive organisations in the world today, can and cannot do. It talks of limiting suicide attacks, avoiding civilian casualties and winning the battle for the hearts and minds of the local civilian population. US Blackwater-Xe mercenaries spread fear in Pakistani town Post Date: 2009-07-27 11:31:20 by Horse

Peshawar - Fear is spreading across University Town, an upmarket residential area in Pakistan's north-western city of Peshawar, due to the overt presence of the controversial US private security contractor Blackwater. Sporting the customary dark glasses and carrying assault rifles, the mercenaries zoom around the neighbourhood in their black-coloured armoured Chevy Suburbans, and shout at motorists when occasionally stranded in a traffic jam. The residents are mainly concerned about Blackwater's reputation as a ruthless, unbridled private army whose employees face multiple charges of murder, child prostitution and weapons smuggling in Iraq. "Sometimes, these guys stand in the ...

The police also arrested members of his family during the raid. Officials say his arrest stems from his failure to publicly denounce terrorism Muhammad had earlier this year brokered a peace treaty in the Swat Valley, which collapsed following clashes between the Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Pakistani military, which culminated in months of open warfare which have destroyed much of the valley and driven millions from their homes. Residents Say NATO, US Troops Massing Along Border Villagers in the Federally Administred Tribal Areas (FATA) North Waziristan Agency are in the panic today over what they term a massive build-up of US and NATO forces along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. According to the residents, NATO troops including tanks, APCs and helicopter gunships have been setting up camps and checkpoints on the Afghan side of the border. Villagers have also reported seeing warplanes and helicopters flying overhead. Pakistani military officials confirmed having received reports about the build-up but were advising the tribesmen not to worry as international forces often establish a massive presence in a ...
US judge: Case against Gitmo inmate is ‘gutted’ over tortured ‘confession’ Post Date: 2009-07-26 05:57:37 by High Hopes

A U.S. district court judge expressed outrage over the Justice Departments admission that it does not have enough evidence to continue the detention of a teenager as an enemy combatant in Guantanamo Bay. Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle said in a ruling Friday that the case against Mohammed Jawad is gutted because Jawad allegedly confessed under torture by Afghan officials that he had thrown a grenade at U.S. troops, according to a report by McClatchy Newspapers. Jawad was just 12 at the time, according to his lawyers, though the Pentagon says he was 16 or 17. Without his statements, I dont understand your case, the judge said, ...
Why Is Ralph Peters So Angry> Post Date: 2009-07-22 06:17:37 by Ada

Ralph Peters is an angry man, apparently plagued with what might be called a Napoleonic complex, no offense to the old Corsican. Like most neoconservatives, he has been strutting and fretting upon the stage of mainstream media for some time. But in a strange discontinuity with Shakespeares poetry, we find that the tales told by this idiot do, in fact, signify something. Ralph is a retired Army intelligence officer, and the author of a long series of books and articles. His novels are formulaic adventures, his non-fiction at times interesting and thought-provoking. Peters has assessed the state of the American empire accurately in some ways, although he seems to be childishly in love ...

Strain of Ongoing Wars Prompts Increase, Gates Says Secretary of Defense Robert Gates today announced what he termed a temporary increase in the size of the US Army, adding 22,000 more troops over the next three years and bringing the active duty numbers to 569,000. Gates said the move was prompted by his concern that the Army could not continue its troop rotations at current levels in both the Afghan and Iraq wars. Pentagon officials say they will boost the numbers through both increased recruitment and increased retention of existing troops. The move has been talked about in the past, but comes on the heals of two recent announcements from the Pentagon. Last week, they ...

A roadside bomb killed four American troops in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, driving the July death toll for U.S. forces to the highest monthly level of the war. The latest deaths brought to at least 30 the number of American service members who have died in Afghanistan this month _ two more than the figure for all of June 2008, which had been the deadliest month for the U.S. since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion drove the Taliban from power. July's death toll for the entire U.S.-led coalition, which includes American, British, Canadian and other forces, stands at 55 _ well over the previous record of 46 deaths suffered in June and August of 2008. U.S. commanders had predicted a bloody ...

Obama's empty promise of due process for terrorism suspects In a speech he gave a couple of months ago, President Obama said he was determined to guarantee "meaningful due process rights" for terrorism suspects. But it turns out he is committed to due process only when it achieves the result he wants. Last week the Defense Department's top lawyer declared that the president has the authority to detain people accused of belonging to or assisting terrorist groups even after they're acquitted. The only point of prosecuting them, it seems, is to create an impression of due process while continuing Bush detention policies that Obama has repeatedly condemned. We already ...

U.S. Will Resettle Palestinian Refugees from Iraq Written by Warren Mass Friday, 17 July 2009 17:30 The U.S. State Department acknowledged on July 7 that it would resettle as many as 1,350 Palestinian refugees from Iraq to various locations in the United States. Most of these are descended from refugees that fled their Palestine homelands after Arab-Israeli conflicts in 1948 and 1967. Others left Kuwait during the 1991 Gulf War. The Palestinian community within Iraq would eventually number around 34,000 people. Paralleling the post-Hussein plight of Iraqi Christians, that number has since fallen to about 15,000. Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, who ruled Iraq from 1979-2003, ...
