Mon, 11 Aug 2008 20:39:47 GMT Georgian soldiers after returning from Iraq, in Tbilisi (marching off to their certain death - Rotara) US military planes have sent 2,000 Georgian troops from Iraq to the embattled region of South Ossetia, a Pentagon official says. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said on Monday that the US was fulfilling its agreement with the Georgian government to assist them in redeploying their troops in an emergency, AFP reported. Earlier in an interview with The Times, General David Petraeus said, "The flights are ongoing to redeploy the elements of the Georgian contingent so that they can deal with the security issues in their country." McCain Adviser Was Lobbyist for Georgia By MARY JACOBY August 11, 2008; Page A5 John McCain's top foreign-policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, is a leading expert on U.S.-allied Georgia -- and was a paid lobbyist for the former Soviet republic until March, in the run-up to what has become a major battle between Georgia and Russia. Democratic rival Barack Obama's presidential campaign was quick to try to paint Mr. Scheunemann's dual roles as a conflict of interest after Sen. McCain swiftly took Georgia's side in the dispute, and cited it as evidence that Sen. McCain is "ensconced in a lobbyist culture," as Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan told reporters over the ...
US military surprised by speed, timing of Russia military action Post Date: 2008-08-11 20:01:08 by Rotara

1 hour ago WASHINGTON (AFP) The US military was surprised by the timing and swiftness of the Russian military's move into South Ossetia and is still trying to sort out what happened, a US defense official said Monday. Russian forces surged into the breakaway region last week after weeks of clashes, threats and warnings between Tblisi and Moscow which culminated August 6 in a two-day Georgian offensive into South Ossetia. That the two countries were on a collision course was no surprise to anyone, but the devastating Russian response was not expected, officials said. "We were tracking it earlier in that week and we knew that things were escalating," said a military ...
Israel playing down Georgia ties Post Date: 2008-08-11 16:58:02 by Disgusted

TEL AVIV (JTA) -- As Russian and Georgian forces battle over South Ossetia, Israel finds itself on the defensive. Though a favored armed supplier for the former Soviet republic, the Jewish state now appears to be at pains to play down these ties rather than risk a crisis with Moscow. With Russia widely expected to supply Tehran with advanced anti-aircraft missiles that could fend off a pre-emptive strike on Iranian nuclear sites, Israel has a vested interest in not appearing to be in Georgia's corner and losing whatever lobbying power it has in Moscow. With troops, tanks and warplanes clashing in the Caucasus over the weekend in the worst armed face-off Europe has seen in decades, ...

Photographer: Adam Berry/Bloomberg News Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Russia sent ground forces into Georgia proper for the first time since fighting began five days ago, seizing a military base and forcing the Georgian army to retreat toward the capital. Georgian officials accused Russia of seeking to overthrow the government of President Mikheil Saakashvili, while Russia said it was protecting the separatist Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Both countries gave contradictory accounts of fighting. Georgia says Russia is invading two cities while the Russians insist ...

Published: Monday 11 August 2008 17:03 UTC Last updated: Monday 11 August 2008 17:03 UTC Russian troops have entered Georgia via the breakaway region of Abkhazia and have reached the city of Senaki. Moscow says it is trying to prevent Georgian troops from regrouping to carry out fresh attacks on the Russian army in South Ossetia, another breakaway region. On Monday, EU mediators tried to broker a cease-fire and Georgian President Michaïl Saakashvili unilaterally signed a cease-fire. Russia, however, refused saying Georgia has continued bombings and artillery attacks in South Ossetia. The G7 countries have urged Russia to sign the agreement. The BBC is deliberately distorting the News from the Georgia Region Post Date: 2008-08-11 15:20:12 by TwentyTwelve

The BBC is deliberately distorting the News from the Georgia Region Chimes of Freedom August 10, 2008 As usual, the BBC is twisting and distorting the news coming out of the Georgia region. We keep being told that around 1500 have been killed in Georgia, the inference being that this has resulted from Russian bombing. Not so, the casualties are in Ossetia. While the Ossetians claimed over 1000 dead the BBC neither reported this or any newsreel coming out of Ossetia showing the destruction caused by the Georgian shelling of the breakaway republic. All we are getting is one-sided reports of the destruction being caused by the Russians. Unlike News 24 which is its international news ...

Taunting the Bear By JAMES TRAUB Published: August 9, 2008 The hostilities between Russia and Georgia that erupted on Friday over the breakaway province of South Ossetia look, in retrospect, almost absurdly over-determined. For years, the Russians have claimed that Georgias president, Mikheil Saakashvili, has been preparing to retake the disputed regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and have warned that they would use force to block such a bid. Mr. Saakashvili, for his part, describes todays Russia as a belligerent power ruthlessly pressing at its borders, implacably hostile to democratic neighbors like Georgia and Ukraine. He has thrown in his lot with the West, and has ...

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT GEORGIA-RUSSIA CONFLICT? Post Date: 2008-08-11 12:37:54 by Rotara

I must admit that I am not an expert on the Georgia-Russia conflict that is now underway. But I have been following issues there for some time and have learned to see some linkages between what is going on in places like Poland, Czech Republic, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, China, and the Georgia-Russia conflict. So here are some random, and not so random, observations and quotes that I think might give us all something to ponder. * It's all about oil and natural gas. Russia has the world's largest supply of natural gas and Iran has the world's second largest supply. There is much oil and natural gas up in the Caspian Sea region. Which ever country controls this part of the ...

TBILISI (Reuters) - Georgia said Russian warplanes attacked more targets near its capital, Tbilisi, early on Monday while U.S. President George W. Bush condemned Moscow's "disproportionate response" to the South Ossetian crisis. Russian planes bombed a military base and radar installation, the interior ministry said, shortly after France's foreign minister arrived in Georgia on a mediation mission. "There were two bombings. One at the Kojori military base and another on Mt. Makhata. As far as I know there are no casualties," Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili told Reuters. It was unclear if Kouchner was still in Tbilisi at the time of the bombing. ...

Israel is hoping to maintain a low profile with regard to the war in Georgia, government officials told Haaretz. One source noted that currently, neither side of the conflict is pleased with Israel's position, since Russia has been irked by Israeli-Georgian weapons deals for some time, and Tbilisi is now frustrated by Israel's decision to halt arms exports. In a move which drew heavy criticism from defense officials, Israel's Foreign Ministry over the weekend recommended complete cessation of the sale of weapons and security-related equipment to Georgia in light of the fighting between its troops and the Russian Army. "The Foreign Ministry's approach demonstrates a ...

Russian news agencies say the Defense Ministry claims to have sunk a Georgian missile boat that was trying to attack Russian navy ships in the Black Sea. The Defense Ministry refused to comment on the Sunday reports to The Associated Press and Georgian officials could not immediately be reached. If confirmed, the incident could mark a serious escalation of the fighting that has raged between Russia and Georgia over the separatist Georgian province of South Ossetia. The ITAR-Tass news agency quoted a ministry spokesman as saying that Georgian missile patrol boats twice tried to attack Russian ships, which fired back and sank one of the Georgian vessels.
