Obama on the Brink

Barack Obama is betraying his promise of change and is in danger of becoming just another political hack. Yes, just like former maverick John McCain, who has refashioned himself as a mindless rubber stamp for the most inane policies of the miserably failed Bush administration. Both candidates are embracing, rather than challenging, the fundamental irrationality of Bush’s “war on terror,” which substitutes hysteria for rational analysis in appraising the dangers the country faces. Terrorism is a social pathology that needs to be excised with the surgical precision of detective work, inspired by a high level of international cooperation, the very opposite of the unilateral ...

Pentagon: More Troops to Afghanistan Soon

WASHINGTON — Top Pentagon leaders are expected soon to recommend to Defense Secretary Robert Gates which additional U.S. troops could be sent to Afghanistan over the next month or so, according to a senior military official. The units are likely to be small and could include engineers, ordnance disposal troops and other support forces needed to shore up fighting needs and the training of Afghan forces. Officials have not ruled out identifying a larger, brigade-sized unit before the end of the year that could either be shifted to Afghanistan from a planned deployment to Iraq or moved from some other location. U.S. commanders in Afghanistan have been asking for three combat brigades, ...

Is Obama the 'Antiwar Candidate'?

Two words of advice for the antiwar voter: Caveat emptor Now that Barack Obama has pulled the rug out from under John McCain's "victory or death" campaign theme, with the invaluable assistance of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, he's preparing the way for a surge of his own: an Afghan surge, to be precise. Averring that we need to put more troops in Afghanistan, whose U.S.-supported "president" functions as little more than the mayor of Kabul, Obama is posing earnestly next to as many uniforms as he can, hoping to establish his credentials as a plausible wartime president. So, you thought we'd be rid of the endless "war on terrorism" once we ...

US planned war in Afghanistan long ago From:The Arab American NewsDate:November 30, 2001Author:AnonymousMore results for: US planned war in Afghanistan long ago Insider accounts published in the British, French and Indian media have revealed that US officials threatened war against Afghanistan during the summer of 2001. These reports include the prediction, made in July, that "if the military action went ahead, it would take place before the snows started falling in Afghanistan, by the middle of October at the latest." The Bush administration began its bombing strikes on the hapless, poverty-stricken country October 7, and ground attacks by US Special Forces began October 19. ...

Obama, the Democratic "War President"

CALGARY - Barack Obama wants to withdraw US troops from Iraq and send them to Afghanistan, which he calls the real front on the `war on terror.’ He also has repeated threats to attack Pakistan `if necessary.’ One understands Obama’s need to sound macho. Rival John McCain has been beating his chest, proclaiming, `I know how to win wars.’ Polls show Americans trust McCain three to one over Obama as a war leader. Unfortunately, recent US presidents seem to require small military conflicts to prove their political virility. But Obama has long called the US-led occupation of Afghanistan a `good war,’ a view most Americans and Canadians share. They see Afghanistan – ...

Why Afghanistan is Not the Good War

It's the perennial thorn in the colonialist's side. It's the war that won't go away. It's a wasp sting that swells, slowly choking the life out of the sting's recipient. It is the nearly seven-year old occupation of Afghanistan by the United States and various NATO allies. Nearly forgotten by most Americans, the situation in that country has taken headlines away from the occupation of Iraq because of the resurgence of the anti-occupation forces. Nine US troops were killed in one day, easily topping any recent US fatality figures coming out of Iraq in recent months. The growing ferocity of the resistance was brought home to me when a young man whom I have been close ...

Brzezinski: Obama May Make Soviets' Mistake

Former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski warns Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama not to make the same mistake the Soviet Union made more than 20 years ago when it deployed more troops in Afghanistan only to suffer a disastrous military defeat. “It is important for U.S. policy in general – and for Obama more specifically – to recognize that simply putting more troops into Afghanistan is not the entire solution,” Brzezinski tells The Financial Times. Brzezinski, an Obama supporter, offered his advice on the heels of Obama's trip to Afghanistan this weekend, where the senator from Illinois is calling for a more concerted effort to focus ...

Nearly Fifty Percent of Americans Think U.S. Should Help Israel Attack Iran Kurt Nimmo Infowars July6 20, 2008 If we are to believe the results of a Rasmussen poll released on July 20, an astounding number of Americans have no problem helping Israel attack Iran. “Forty-two percent (42%) of Americans say that if Israel launches an attack against Iran, the United States should help Israel. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 46% believe the United States should do nothing while just 1% believe the U.S. should help Iran.” Moreover, once again demonstrating a complete ignorance of history and an absence of rational thinking — predictable, ...

"Our message to the Afghan government is this: We want a strong partnership based on `more for more' - more resources from the United States and NATO, and more action from the Afghan government to improve the lives of the Afghan people," Obama and Sens. 2 minutes ago KABUL, Afghanistan - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says the situation in Afghanistan is "precarious" and "urgent." In an interview broadcast Sunday during his first trip to Afghanistan, Obama said the U.S. needs to start planning now to send in more troops. He has called for an additional one to two brigades — or about 7,000 troops — to be sent to Afghanistan to help counter a resurgent Taliban and quell rising violence. Obama told CBS News that Afghanistan has to be the central focus in the fight against terrorists. He said the Bush administration allowed itself to be distracted by a "war of choice" but now is the ...

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama pledged steadfast aid to Afghanistan in talks with its Western-backed leader Sunday and vowed to pursue the war on terror "with vigor" if he is elected, an Afghan official said. On the second day of an international tour designed to burnish his foreign policy credentials, Obama and other U.S. senators held two hours of talks with President Hamid Karzai at his palace in the Afghan capital. Obama has chided Karzai for not doing more to build confidence in the Afghan government, whose grip remains weak after the ouster of the Taliban in 2001. U.S. Embassy spokesman Mark Stroh said the senators had discussed ...

As wars lengthen, toll on military families mounts

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Far from the combat zones, the strains and separations of no-end-in-sight wars are taking an ever-growing toll on military families despite the armed services' earnest efforts to help. Divorce lawyers see it in the breakup of youthful marriages as long, multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan fuel alienation and mistrust. Domestic violence experts see it in the scuffles that often precede a soldier's departure or sour a briefly joyous homecoming. Teresa Moss, a counselor at Fort Campbell's Lincoln Elementary School, hears it in the voices of deployed soldiers' children as they meet in groups to share accounts of nightmares, bedwetting and ...

Suspect soldiers: Did crimes in U.S. foretell violence in Iraq? Before Army Sgt. 1st Class Randal Ruby was accused in Iraq of beating prisoners and of conspiring to plant rifles on dead civilians, he amassed a 10-year criminal record in Colordao and Washington state for assaulting his wife and in Maine for a drunken high-speed police chase, for which he remains wanted. Before Lance Cpl. Delano Holmes stabbed an Iraqi private to death, angering the soldier’s unit of coalition soldiers, he was hospitalized after threatening suicide in high school, accused of assault, disorderly conduct and trespassing, and, in the months leading up to deployment, twice linked to drug use. Before ...

57 minutes ago BERLIN - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says U.S. troops should leave Iraq "as soon as possible," according to a magazine report, and he called presidential candidate Barack Obama's suggestion of 16 months "the right timeframe for a withdrawal." In an interview with Germany's Der Spiegel magazine released Saturday, al-Maliki said he was not seeking to endorse Obama. The Illinois senator and likely Democratic nominee has pledged to withdraw combat troops from Iraq within 16 months if he is elected. "That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes," al-Maliki was quoted as ...

(AP Photo/Robert Burns) BAGHDAD (AP) - Iraqi officials say they have approved plans to build a five-star hotel in the Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone. Bush, Fuel, and Funding Friends of Terrorists Written by Catherine Mullins Friday, 18 July 2008 10:27 In a June 4 ABC News report, it was revealed that an 80-million-dollar contract from the U.S. military for jet fuel was given to an Arab businessman wanted by the FBI. Even worse, a closer look shows this seeming conflict of interests may not be just a matter of incompetence. “If you do business with terrorists, if you support or sponsor them, you will not do business with the United States of America” President Bush adamantly proclaimed in his memorable address September 24, 2001, just a few days after “the war on terror” had been launched. However, after allowing ...

Bush agrees to time 'horizon' on Iraq troop cuts

22 minutes ago WASHINGTON - President Bush has agreed to set a "general time horizon" for deeper U.S. troop cuts in Iraq, the White House said Friday, a dramatic shift from his once-ironclad unwillingness to talk about any kind of deadlines or timetables. The announcement put Bush in the position of offering to talk with Iraqi leaders about a politically charged issue that he adamantly has refused to discuss with the Democratic-led Congress at home. It also could complicate the presidential campaign arguments of Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama who have staked out starkly opposite stands about the unpopular war. What's changed? The sharp reduction in ...

BERLIN, July 11 (UPI) -- A 91-year-old German man who was Adolf Hitler's main bodyguard says in his book, "The Last Witness," the Nazi leader was "a good boss." Rochus Misch, the only person still alive who was present in Hitler's bunker when he killed himself in 1945, discusses his personal opinions of the Fuhrer in the book, published this month in Germany, Haaretz reported. Misch became part of Hitler's "inner circle" in 1940, when he began working as a bodyguard, courier and assistant in the German leader's office. "In the inner circle, Hitler was a good boss. In the living quarters and the work room Hitler was a very relaxed man. He ...

Obama, McCain Plans on Afghan Surge Need Pakistan to Join Fight

July 18 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama and John McCain, in a rare note of harmony on national security, both want a surge of troops into Afghanistan. Experts say adding forces won't help much in combating insurgents unless Pakistan joins the fight. Afghanistan will remain vulnerable to attacks as long as Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters have safe havens in neighboring Pakistan, and a bigger U.S. force won't force the Pakistanis to eradicate the sanctuaries, the experts say. A buildup also won't address obstacles to progress such as mistrust between villagers and Afghan security forces or tribal elders' reluctance to resist the insurgents. ``Simply to focus on the level of troops ...

REPORT: DANGER FROM ELECTRICAL WORK IN IRAQ SEVERE

NEW YORK (AP) - Inferior electrical work by private contractors on U.S. military bases in Iraq is more widespread than the Pentagon has acknowledged, according to a published report. A Senate panel investigating the electrocutions of Americans on bases in Iraq was told last week by former KBR Inc. (KBR) electricians that the contractor used employees with little electrical expertise to supervise subcontractors in Iraq and hired foreigners who couldn't speak English. The Pentagon has said 13 Americans have been electrocuted in Iraq since September 2003. It has ordered Houston-based KBR to inspect all the facilities it maintains in Iraq for electrical hazards. The New York Times ...

Madam Speaker, as one who is most consistently opposed to war and violence, I join my colleagues in condemning the brutal and unjustified attack on a Jewish community center in Argentina 14 years ago. I do not support this resolution, however, as it misuses a tragedy 14 years ago in a foreign country to push for US war against Iran today. Although this resolution clearly blames Iran and Hezbollah for the bombing, in fact the investigation is ongoing and far from conclusive. In an article titled “ U.S. uses probe to pressure Iran,” the Wall Street Journal earlier this year suggested that renewed US interest in this 14 year old case is more related to politics than a genuine desire ...

WASHINGTON - Pentagon leader on Wednesday signaled a surge in U.S. forces in Afghanistan "sooner rather than later," a shift that could send some units there within weeks, as officials prepare to cut troop levels in Iraq. Senior military officials are looking across the services to identify smaller units and other equipment that could be sent to Afghanistan, according to a defense official. Although there are no brigade-sized units that can be deployed quickly into Afghanistan, military leaders believe they can find a number of smaller units such as aviation, engineering and surveillance troops that can be moved more swiftly, said the official, who requested anonymity because ...

Military surge in Iraq ends; 150,000 troops remain

WASHINGTON (AP) - The military surge into Iraq that began more than 18 months ago has ended. But 150,000 U.S. troops remain, as many as 15,000 more than before the buildup began. In recent days, the 3rd Infantry Division's 2nd Brigade, the last of the five additional combat brigades sent in by President Bush last year, left the country. Its departure marks the end of what the Pentagon calls the "surge." And it starts the 45-day evaluation period that Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, told Congress he would need to assess the security situation and determine how many more troops he could send home. In the complex battlefield that is Iraq, it's not that ...
