AP IMPACT: Number of disabled veterans rising Post Date: 2008-05-11 13:27:41 by christine

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Increasing numbers of U.S. troops have left the military with damaged bodies and minds, an ever-larger pool of disabled veterans that will cost the nation billions for decades to come - even as the total population of America's vets shrinks. Despite the decline in total vets - as soldiers from World War II and Korea die - the government expects to be spending $59 billion a year to compensate injured warriors in 25 years, up from today's $29 billion, according to internal documents obtained by The Associated Press. And the Veterans Affairs Department concedes the bill could be much higher. Why? Worse wounds. More disabilities. More vets aware of the benefits and ...
US Military Targets Southeast Colorado (Pt 1 of 3) Post Date: 2008-05-11 11:45:44 by christine

Property seizures in other countries are considered totalitarian. When they occur at the hands of the corporate-controlled U.S. government they are apparently condoned and even facilitated by the courts whose job it is to reign in this kind of abuse. The monopoly media, including conservative talk radio, is an information filtering system masquerading as news. They habitually conceal government land grabs and other privatization schemes like the current controversy in southeastern Colorado. The army is attempting to seize property, claiming they need extra land to better prepare the troops. Whats really behind this patriotic-lets-help-the-troops endeavor? ...
NeoCons Admit that War on Terror is a Hoax Post Date: 2008-05-10 20:48:28 by christine

Key war on terror architect Douglas Feith has now confirmed Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and Wesley Clark in admitting that the so-called War on Terror is a hoax. In fact, starting right after 9/11 -- at the latest -- the goal has always been to create "regime change" and instability in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Lebanon so as to protect Israel. And the goal was never really to destroy Al Qaeda. As reported in a new article in Asia Times: Three weeks after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, former US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld established an official military objective of not only removing the Saddam Hussein regime by force but overturning the ...

May 10 (Bloomberg) -- Blackwater Worldwide survived the controversy sparked by a September shooting incident in Baghdad that left at least 16 Iraqis dead and prompted a review of security contractors, the New York Times reported. The company's contract with the U.S. State Department was renewed for one more year last month after the agency decided two other companies, DynCorp International Inc. and Triple Canopy Inc., were unable to provide the necessary security in Baghdad, the newspaper said. Some Blackwater employees may face criminal charges from incidents, including the shooting death of an Iraqi vice president's bodyguard in December 2006, the newspaper said. A federal grand ...

Willing Executioners: America's Bipartisan Atrocity Deepens in Somalia Wednesday, 07 May 2008 Do you want to know what the entire American political establishment -- Democrat and Republican, conservative and "progressive" -- really stands for? Do you want to know what they all support, whole-heartedly, without the slightest objection or demur? Do you want to see their true vision for the world, behind all the pious rhetoric and poisonous lies? Then look no further; here it is, in the raw: A leading human rights group on Tuesday accused Ethiopian troops in Somalia of killing civilians and committing atrocities, including slitting people's throats, gouging out eyes and ...

Planners Dream of Five Star Hotel for Green Zone By Sharon Weinberger EmailMay 05, 2008 | 8:19:40 AMCategories: Cash Rules Everything Around Me MarriottNo sewer system, no power, no problem. U.S. officials in Iraq are thinking ahead about how to create a "high-end buffer" zone around the highly protected U.S. embassy, the AP reports. At the top of the list: a five-star hotel. When you have $1 billion hanging out there and 1,000 employees lying around, you kind of want to know who your neighbors are. You want to influence what happens in your neighborhood over time," said Navy Capt. Thomas Karnowski, who led the team that created the development plan. Karnowski said a deal ...

Mockery: A child's T-shirt proclaiming the camp a tourist spot The sands are white, the sea laps gently and crowds of bronzed Americans laze in the Caribbean sunshine. They have a cinema, a golf course and, naturally, a gift shop stocked with mugs, jaunty T-shirts and racks of postcards showing perfect sunsets and bright green iguanas. Only the barbed wire decoration, a recurring motif, hints at anything wrong. Welcome to "Taliban Towers" at Guantanamo Bay, the most ghoulishly distasteful tourist destination on the planet. As these astonishing mementoes show, the US authorities are promoting the world's most notorious prison camp as a cheap hideaway for American ...

Three weeks after the 9/11 terror attacks, former U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld established an official military objective of not only removing the Saddam Hussein regime by force but overturning the regime in Iran, as well as in Syria and four other countries in the Middle East, according to a document quoted extensively in then Undersecretary of Defence for Policy Douglas Feith's recently published account of the Iraq war decisions. Feith's account further indicates that this aggressive aim of remaking the map of the Middle East by military force and the threat of force was supported explicitly by the country's top military leaders. Feith's book, "War and ...
War Funding May Soon Reach Floor (HOUSE DEMS SEEK TO END TORTURE, GITMO, PERMANENT BASES, IRAQ OCCUPATION) Post Date: 2008-05-06 10:37:56 by aristeides

War Funding May Soon Reach Floor By Liriel Higa, CQ Staff Democratic leaders said Monday they aim to bring the long-awaited bill that would fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the House floor later this week. But GOP appropriators, upset that Democrats plan to bypass a committee markup and bring the supplemental funding measure directly to the floor, began their promised efforts to block the bill. With the bill now written, Louise M. Slaughter, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the Rules Committee, said she hoped her panel would mark up the measure on Wednesday, meaning floor action as early as Thursday. But Appropriations Chairman David R. Obey, D-Wis., said House Majority Leader Steny H. ...

To the critics, whether anti-war activists or House Republicans, Pelosi has made her feelings clear: Get over it. This weeks maneuvering over a $200 billion war spending bill has revealed Pelosi self-confidently playing what she believes with increasing evidence is a strong hand. Warring as Lying Throughout American History Post Date: 2008-05-06 05:54:32 by Ada

Americans are taught to expect their elected leaders to be relatively honest. But it wasnt always like that. In the mid 1800s, people joked about political candidates who claimed to have been born in a log cabin that they built with their own hands. This jibe was spurred by William Henry Harrisons false claim of a log-cabin birth in the 1840 presidential campaign. Americans were less naive about dishonest politicians in the first century after this nations founding. But that still did not deter presidents from conjuring up wars. Presidential deceits on foreign policy have filled cemeteries across the land. George W. Bushs deceits on the road to war with Iraq fit a ...
Pat Tillman: Killed by Friendly Fire or Executed by His Own Government? Post Date: 2008-05-05 21:56:34 by richard9151

Charles E. Carlson Apr 04, 2007 The Bush Administration knew at the top that celebrity soldier Pat Tillman had been killed by persons in, or attached to his own unit, yet it purposely chose to muffle the incident for more than two years; lying to the family while lionizing the victim as a war hero. Circumstantial evidence, primarily illogical actions at very high levels of the administration, suggests more than a cover up of a friendly fire accident (a common mistake during war.) Had Tillman been accidentally shot by one of his own unit the whole matter could have been put to rest by holding a few harsh court marshals of those immediately involved, and issuing profuse ...

Published: Monday May 5, 2008 US denies again on Monday Former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter, who was among the original experts to question Bush Administration claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, now says he believes an attack on Iran is a "virtual guarantee." "We take a look at the military buildup, we take a look at the rhetoric, we take a look at the diplomatic posturing, and I would say that its a virtual guarantee that there will be a limited aerial strike against Iran in the not-so-near futureor not-so-distant future, that focuses on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Command," Ritter said last week in a little-noted interview with ...

If you learned that the man in this photo -- a professional assassin -- was the head of security at one of our nations most vulnerable nuclear facilities, would it trouble you? Or would it sound like one hell of a story? SEE PHOTO HERE: www.esquire.com/print-this/features/mercenary0607 The Palisades Nuclear Plant in Covert, Michigan, is real. It produces 778 megawatts of electricity, and the electricity keeps the lights burning for about half a million residents. The nuclear reactor inside the nuclear plant is also real. UPDATED: Another Iraq vet suicide--this one witnessed by his mom by GregMitch Mon May 05, 2008 at 08:12:30 AM PDT As the scandal of suicide attempts by Iraq veterans expands -- in the face of Veterans Administration denials -- another horrific case has emerged, once again only gaining attention because of a local newspaper. I have been tracking these accounts for almost five years and only recently has the problem, with an estimated 1,000 attempts a month now reported, gained wide media, and to some extent official, attention. The latest story came Saturday in a story by Patrick McCreless in The Cullman Times of Cullman, Ala. The headline is similar to so many others lately: ...
Top U.S. officer says would prefer no war on Iran Post Date: 2008-05-05 14:04:15 by FOH

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq would make it difficult to mount any attack on Iran, the Pentagon's top officer said in remarks broadcast on Monday, adding that he would prefer to avoid a new regional war. "I actually am very hopeful that we don't get into a position where we have to get into a conflict," Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Israel's Channel Ten television when asked if he might recommend that U.S. forces strike Iranian nuclear facilities preemptively. "It would be a very significant challenge for the United States right now to get into a third conflict in that part of the ...
