Are these Syrian nuclear pictures faked? Post Date: 2008-05-01 15:13:57 by a vast rightwing conspirator

The CIA published three aerial photographs last week purporting to show a Syrian nuclear reactor, bombed by Israel last September. But are the pictures all that they seem? Doubts about their authenticity have been raised by Professor William Beeman, head of anthropology at the University of Minnesota, who has had a long involvement with the Middle East. He posted on a Los Angeles Times website a note received from a "colleague with US security clearance" pointing out "irregularities". The unnamed colleague said a picture taken before the bombing looked as if it had been digitally enhanced, noting that the lower part of the building, the annexe and the windows pointing ...
CIA chief says China's rapid military buildup troubling Post Date: 2008-05-01 01:10:56 by richard9151

When you read this, please keep in mind the military budgets we saw posted in 4um, which had the US (so-called) defense budget at over 657 billion dollars. This figure did not include numerous programs hidden in other budget items but which should be declared in the defense budget. Remember that 657 billion dollars when the CIA talks about how troubling it is that China spends about 15% of that. Wed Apr 30, 3:41 PM ET WASHINGTON (AFP) - CIA chief Michael Hayden charged Wednesday that China was beefing up its military with "remarkable speed and scope," calling the buildup "troubling." The Chinese, he said, had fully absorbed the lessons of both Gulf wars, developing ...
White House admits fault on 'Mission Accomplished' banner Post Date: 2008-04-30 21:25:18 by richard9151

2 hours, 13 minutes ago WASHINGTON - The White House said Wednesday that President Bush has paid a price for the "Mission Accomplished" banner that was flown in triumph five years ago but later became a symbol of U.S. misjudgments and mistakes in the long and costly war in Iraq. Thursday is the fifth anniversary of Bush's dramatic landing in a Navy jet on an aircraft carrier homebound from the war. The USS Abraham Lincoln had launched thousands of airstrikes on Iraq. "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended," Bush said at the time. "The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on Sept. 11, 2001, and still goes on." The "Mission ...

Higher US Iraq toll not due to eroded security: general 1 hour ago WASHINGTON (AFP) The jump in April in US soldier deaths in Iraq -- at 49 the highest monthly toll since September 2007 -- does not reflect deteriorated security in the country, a senior US military official said Wednesday. "While it is sad to see an increase in casualties, I don't think it is necessarily indicative of a major change in the operating environment," said Lieutenant General Carter Ham, Joint Staff director for operations in the US Department of Defense. "When the level of fighting increases, then sadly the number of casualties does tend to rise," he said. The higher toll came ...

Iran dumps U.S. dollar for oil trades Post Date: 2008-04-30 17:18:10 by aristeides

Iran dumps U.S. dollar for oil trades TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran, OPEC's second-largest producer, has stopped conducting oil transactions in U.S. dollars, a top Oil Ministry official said Wednesday, in a concerted attempt to reduce reliance on Washington at a time of tension over Tehran's nuclear program and suspected involvement in Iraq. Iran has dramatically reduced dependence on the dollar over the past year in the face of increasing U.S. pressure on its financial system and the fall in the value of the American currency. Oil is priced in dollars on the world market, and the currency's depreciation has concerned producers because it has contributed to rising crude ...

Casus Bellum (SIC) Posted by Lew Rockwell at April 30, 2008 03:52 PM Uh oh. Now they've gone and done it. Iran has dissed the Fed and its dollar by saying it wants to be paid in euros and yen only for its oil. The murderous Bush, who was already itching to nuke the Persians, must be dreaming of mass death at this moment. (Thanks to Rachel.) **************************************************** Lew Rockwell must never have learned Latin. The correct phrase is "casus belli".
Operation Redwing Post Date: 2008-04-30 11:47:21 by echo5sierra

Recently, we looked at the Rules of Engagement under which our military must labor. We saw that those rules are a prescription for defeat; that they are the main reason we have failed to win a war since World War II, and that el presidente Jorge W. Boosh administers them today. We saw that Señor Boosh could replace them whenever he likes with a prescription for victory, but of course he does not, because victory is the last thing he wants. One of the examples we looked at was Operation Redwing, in which Booshs Rules of Engagement led directly to the deaths of nineteen of our men, three members of a four-man Navy SEAL team and the sixteen men who choppered in to rescue them. ...

SLOBODAN LEKIC, Associated Press Writer 8 minutes ago BAGHDAD - The killings of three U.S. soldiers in separate attacks in Baghdad pushed the American death toll for April up to 47, making it the deadliest month since September, the military said Wednesday. One soldier died when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb. The other died of wounds sustained when he was attacked by small-arms fire, the military said. Both incidents occurred Tuesday in northwestern Baghdad. A third soldier died in a roadside bombing Tuesday night in the east of the capital, the military said. The statement did not give a more specific location. But the eastern half of Baghdad includes embattled Sadr City ...

news.yahoo.com/s/afp/2008...8X4sI1tknFTo1HGk5KJqWwvIE 25 minutes ago MEXICO CITY (AFP) - US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Tuesday the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf should be seen as a "reminder" of US military power in the region. But Gates flatly denied that the United States was preparing the ground for military strikes against Iran. "I don't think we'll have two carriers for a protracted period of time. So I don't see it as an escalation. I think it could be seen, though, as a reminder," Gates told reporters here during a visit with Mexican officials. The arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Gulf follows a ...

2 hours, 9 minutes ago WASHINGTON - Army officials said Tuesday they are inspecting every barracks building worldwide to see whether plumbing and other problems revealed at Fort Bragg, N.C., last week are widespread. Brig. Gen. Dennis Rogers, who is responsible for maintaining barracks throughout the Army, told reporters at the Pentagon that most inspections were done last weekend but he had not seen final results. While not providing specifics about problems discovered during the weekend inspections, Rogers indicated some deficiencies were corrected. In cases where extensive repairs are deemed necessary, the soldiers in that housing would be moved elsewhere until the fixes are ...

2 hours, 41 minutes ago BAGHDAD - Dozens of fighters ambushed a U.S. patrol in Baghdad's main Shiite militia stronghold Tuesday, firing rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun bursts as the American push into Sadr City increasingly faces pockets of close urban combat. U.S. forces struck back with 200-pound guided rockets that devastated at least three buildings in the densely packed district that serves as the Baghdad base for the powerful Mahdi Army militia. The U.S. military said 28 militiamen were killed as the U.S. patrol pulled back. Local hospital officials said dozens of civilians were killed or wounded. Such street battles in tight confines and amid frightened ...

Monday, April 28, 2008 11:34 PM PDT Longshoremen should finish unloading 6,700 tons of sand contaminated with depleted uranium and lead Tuesday afternoon, said Chad Hyslop, spokesman for the disposal company American Ecology. The BBC Alabama arrived at the port Saturday afternoon with the 306 containers carrying the contaminated sand from Camp Doha, a U.S. Army base in Kuwait. The sand was packaged in bags designed to transport hazardous waste. Longshoremen unloaded the containers in two shifts Sunday, then two more Monday, Hyslop said. They wore standard safety gear, and dust protection equipment and respirators were available, he said. However, no one has opted to wear the ...

29/04/08 "Washington Post" -- - 27/04/08 -- Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama offer the same beguiling Democratic version of the global war on terrorism: Get out of Iraq and put more U.S. forces into Afghanistan to win that conflict decisively. Republicans are also increasingly urging President Bush to adopt an Afghanistan-first policy. "The basic failure in priorities" in Bush's war on terrorism lies "in the fact that our monthly investment in Iraq is $10 billion a month and $2 billion a month in Afghanistan," writes David Abshire, a GOP elder statesman, in "A Call to Greatness," a new book intended to set the agenda for the next presidency. When ...

Only this time the rogue states are not the Third Reich and Fascist Italy. They are the United States and Israel. War coverage attracts viewers and sells advertising. The neoconservatives are ecstatic. Hegemony uber alles is back on track. The US Air Force cant wait to show what it can do. Defense contractors see no end of the profits. Under cover of the mayhem and ...
The Military Option : War with Syria? (URI AVNERY ) Post Date: 2008-04-29 17:28:49 by aristeides

The Military Option War with Syria? War with Syria? Peace with Syria? A big military operation against Hamas in the Gaza strip? A cease-fire with Hamas? Our media discuss these questions dispassionately, as if they were equivalent options. Like a person in a showroom making a choice between two cars. This one is good, and so is the other one. So which should one buy? And nobody cries out: War is the height of stupidity! * * * KARL VON CLAUSEWITZ, the renowned military theorist, famously said that war is nothing but the continuation of politics by other means. Meaning: war is there to serve policy and is useless when it does not. What policies did the wars in the last hundred years ...

U.S. ex-commander at Baghdad Airport dies from "depression" by GregMitch [Subscribe] Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 08:24:04 AM PDT Even after covering the tragic final chapters in the lives of so many U.S. military personnel in Iraq or veterans back home, I found the brutally frank opening line in an obituary from four days ago particularly haunting: "Donald P. Christy, Lt. Col, USAF, passed away April 21, 2008 in Colorado Springs after an extended bout of anxiety and depression." Further on, the obit mentioned that in 2004 "Don served a tour of duty as the Deputy Commander at Baghdad Airport in Iraq" -- which, as we now know, must have been one of the most stressful ...

MAINSTREAM MEDIA WILL BE COMPLICIT IN NEXT TERRORIST ATTACKS By: Devvy April 28, 2008 On April 24, 2008, The Arizona-Republic, published a hit piece on Sen. Karen Johnson, who currently serves in the Arizona State Legislature. This piece of drivel is titled, 'Drinking the 9/11 Kool-Aid.' As you can see by reading it, the author believes that no elected official should question any aspect of the Bush Administration's fairy tale of the events of September 11, 2001. This has been the prevailing attitude of the so-called mainstream media, including cable "news" networks since that day. Anyone questioning the hoax perpetrated on the American people is a Kool-Aid ...

Military Propaganda Pushed Me Off TV by Jeff Cohen In the fall of 2002, week after week, I argued vigorously against invading Iraq in debates televised on MSNBC. I used every possible argument that might sway mainstream viewers no real threat, cost, instability. But as the war neared, my debates were terminated. In my 2006 book Cable News Confidential, I explained why I lost my airtime: There was no room for me after MSNBC launched Countdown: Iraq a daily one-hour show that seemed more keen on glamorizing a potential war than scrutinizing or debating it. Countdown: Iraq featured retired colonels and generals, sometimes resembling boys with war toys as they used props, maps ...

1 hour, 20 minutes ago BAGHDAD - Bombardments by suspected militants killed four U.S. soldiers Monday as troops tried to push Shiite fighters farther from the U.S.-protected Green Zone and out of range of their rockets and mortars. At least 44 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq in April, making it the deadliest month for U.S. forces since September. The U.S. military said three soldiers were killed in eastern Baghdad by indirect fire, a reference to mortars or rockets. The statement did not give an exact location for the attack, but the Shiite stronghold of Sadr City has been the scene of intense fighting recently with Shiite militiamen. A fourth U.S. soldier was killed by a ...
Running a Risk with Iran (JEFF HUBER'S COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF WAR WITH IRAN) Post Date: 2008-04-28 16:49:28 by aristeides

Running a Risk with Iran Predicting what might happen in a shooting match with Iran is a perilous errand. The Clausewitzean concepts of fog and friction apply to modern war every bit as much as they do to the conflicts of bygone eras. For all our fantastical weaponry and information gizmology, stuff still breaks at the worst possible time and the information is often as not wrong. Nonetheless, we can do a back-of-the-envelope operational analysis to estimate whether any conceivable benefit of attacking Iran can justify the risks involved. Wild Purple Yonder I noted last week that it would be difficult to bomb Iran back to the Stone Age because so little of it has evolved even that far. ...
