Judge won't inquire into CIA tapes case By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 24 minutes ago WASHINGTON - A federal judge refused on Wednesday to delve into the destruction of CIA interrogation videos, saying there was no evidence the Bush administration violated a court order and the Justice Department deserved time to conduct its own investigation. ADVERTISEMENT The decision by U.S. District Judge Henry H. Kennedy was a victory for the Bush administration, which had urged the courts not to wade into a politically charged issue already being investigated by the Justice Department, CIA and Congress. The CIA acknowledged last month that in 2005 it destroyed videos of ...
The Afghanistan Surge; Pentagon Poised To Send 3,000 More Troops Post Date: 2008-01-09 18:52:15 by Brian S

Defense officials aren't calling it a surge, but it sure looks like one. The Pentagon is poised to send more than 3,000 additional troops to Afghanistan -- all of them Marines, ABC News has learned. The plan is a sign that things are not going well in Afghanistan. Commanders say they simply do not have enough troops to deal with the increased threat. "We are outmanned, across the board," one senior official told ABC News. There are currently 26,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, the largest number since the start of the war. The move to send additional combat forces is in response to request by General Dan McNeill, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan and has been approved ...

BAGHDAD (AFP) A US commander on Wednesday said the number of "spectacular" assaults by Al-Qaeda in Iraq has increased although the overall number of attacks was down and 20 key militants have been killed or caught. Major General Mark Hertling, commanding general of coalition forces in northern Iraq, gave no specific examples of what he termed "spectacular" attacks, referring only to big car bombs and to suicide attacks. "These spectacular events and intimidation are designed to incite fear in the population," Hertling told a news conference in Baghdad. Suicide bombers have continued to carry out bloody attacks in recent weeks, with one killing 25 ...

BAGHDAD (AFP) Three US soldiers were killed when they were attacked with small arms fire while conducting operations in northern Iraq, the American military announced on Wednesday. Two other soldiers were wounded in the attack, which occurred in Salaheddin province on Tuesday, a military statement said. US commanders announced on Tuesday the launch of a joint US-Iraqi assault against Al-Qaeda in Iraq, codenamed Operation Phantom Phoenix. The location of the operation was not identified, but US commanders say Al-Qaeda fighters have shifted to northern Iraq, especially Diyala, Salaheddin and Nineveh provinces, after being chased out of Baghdad by a "surge" of American ...

08/01/08 "ICH" -- -- I seem to have been demonstrating against American racism, imperialism, wars and mass murder all my adult life from the Vietnam era of the 1960s and 1970s onwards. Back in the 1960s decent people chanted Hay, hay LBJ, how many kids will you kill today? (LBJ being US President Lyndon Baines Johnson who presided over the Indochina War - 13 million excess deaths in total - from the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) in 1963 to the accession of President Richard Nixon in 1969. These days we have been chanting Bush, Blair, CIA, how many kids did you kill today? or the more general Hay, hay USA, how many kids did ...
U.S. Attack in Iraq Is No Surprise to Many Insurgents Post Date: 2008-01-09 06:21:25 by Ada

ESAIWID, Iraq With extraordinary secrecy, and even an information blackout aimed at most of their Iraqi Army comrades, American troops began a major offensive on Tuesday to drive Sunni insurgents from strongholds in Diyala Province. But many insurgents still managed to flee the first villages the Americans went into, showing just how difficult it is to trap the elusive militants. American forces moved into the north Diyala River Valley. More Photos » Because at least half the insurgents escaped before an offensive last June, American planners deliberately kept most Iraqi units in the dark before this one, a tactic that suggests they cannot fully trust the allies who are ...

The Gulf of Tonkin and the Strait of Hormuz By ROBERT FANTINA As the U.S. government continues to demonstrate its inability to learn from history, an alarming report from the Strait of Hormuz was broadcast to the world on January 7. The Associated Press reported the following: "In what U.S. officials called a serious provocation, Iranian boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, threatening to explode the American vessels." These Iranian ships are believed to part of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's navy, the organization that the U.S. Congress officially decreed a 'terrorist' organization. Those either old enough to ...

Report reveals Vietnam War hoaxes, faked attacks North Vietnamese made hoax calls to get the US military to bomb its own units during the Vietnam War, according to declassified information that also confirmed US officials faked an incident to escalate the war. The report was released by the National Security Agency, responsible for much of the United States' codebreaking and eavesdropping work, in response to a "mandatory declassification" request, the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) said Monday. From the first intercepted cable -- a 1945 message from Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh to his Russian counterpart Joseph Stalin -- to the final evacuation of US spies from ...

What is This "Iranian Provocation" BS? by dlindorff [Subscribe] Tue Jan 08, 2008 at 07:50:15 AM PST Who is provoking whom in the Persian Gulf? Don't expect your local newspaper to tell you. By Dave Lindorff Not one news story about this week's latest chapter in the administration's ongoing effort to gin up a crazy war with Iran--the so-called "provocation" caused by Iranian naval speedboats approaching within 200 meters of a US destroyer--mentioned that the US, which sits some 7500 miles away from Iran, has sent a whole fully-armed armada into the Persian Gulf just off Iran's coast. Or that the Vice President actually flew out to an aircraft carrier ...

Musharraf: "We Are Not Looking" for Bin Laden By Noah Shachtman EmailJanuary 07, 2008 | 7:12:30 PMCategories: Perils of Pakistan, War Update Pervez_musharraf_india_ipe_20060109 The U.S. has dropped $10 billion into Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf's lap -- much of it in cash. Allegedly, that's to fight the jihadists in his country and across his border. But, somehow, that mission does not involve hunting for Osama bin Laden. Musharraf, in response to a 60 Minutes question about bin Laden, said, "We are not particularly looking for him, but we are operating against terrorists and Al Qaeda and militant Taliban. And in the process, obviously, combined, maybe we are ...

A Pentagon official said that US forces were "literally" on the verge of firing on the Iranian boats as they passed through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and had moved to man their guns when the Iranians turned and sped away. No shots were fired in the incident yesterday morning in one of the world's key shipping routes for crude oil. "We urge the Iranians to refrain from ...

from the January 7, 2008 edition Washington - Little has been known about so-called foreign fighters in Iraq, other than that they are typically motivated by ideology and are usually smuggled in through Syria in small numbers. Many perform suicide bombing missions and instigate some of the country's starkest violence. But a new analysis published last month by experts at West Point shows that most of these individuals come from Saudi Arabia and Libya, as well as other North African countries such as Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. The analysis suggests that the bulk of foreign fighters originate from countries with whom the United States is allied Saudi Arabia, for one ...

There, on p. 90, for instance, is the larger-than-life CIA director of the era, William Casey, the "Catholic Knight of Malta educated by Jesuits," who "believed fervently that by spreading the Catholic Church's reach and power he could contain Communism's advance, or reverse it." And, if you couldn't have the ...

01/06/08 "New York Times" - -- -WASHINGTON President Bushs senior national security advisers are debating whether to expand the authority of the Central Intelligence Agency and the military to conduct far more aggressive covert operations in the tribal areas of Pakistan. The debate is a response to intelligence reports that Al Qaeda and the Taliban are intensifying efforts there to destabilize the Pakistani government, several senior administration officials said. Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and a number of President Bushs top national security advisers met Friday at the White House to discuss the proposal, which is part of ...

Ehud Barak, the defence minister, is said to want to convince him that an Israeli military strike against uranium enrichment facilities in Iran would be feasible if diplomatic efforts failed to halt nuclear operations. A range of military options has been prepared. Last month it was revealed that the US National Intelligence Estimate report, drawing ...

Bush: We would defend Israel against Iran By Reuters An Iranian attack on Israel isn't imminent, but the U.S. would defend its ally in such an event, United States President George Bush told Channel 2 television just days before he begins a Mideast visit. A recent U.S. intelligence report suggesting that Iran suspended its nuclear weapons program in 2003 did not mean that Iran wasn't a danger, because Iran can restart the program or use its civilian nuclear program for military purposes, Bush said in an interview broadcast yesterday. "If I were an Israeli, I would take the words of the Iranian president seriously, and as president of the United States I take them ...

BAGHDAD An Iraqi soldier opened fire on U.S. troops during a joint patrol in the northern city of Mosul on Dec. 26, killing two and wounding three others along with a civilian interpreter, Iraqi and U.S. officials said on Saturday. The U.S. military said it was not clear why the Iraqi soldier had opened fire, but two Iraqi generals told Reuters the attacker had links to Sunni Arab insurgent groups. The U.S. military said in a statement the two soldiers were Captain Rowdy Inman and Sergeant Benjamin Portell, both assigned to 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, III Corps, based in Fort Hood, Texas. "The Iraqi soldier who allegedly opened fire fled the scene but was ...

If the reader has not already done so, I again urge you to read the book, Hitler's Cross, which was written by Erwin Lutzer and published by Moody Press. This book should be "required reading" for every pastor and Christian layman in America. In his book, Lutzer focuses on the attitudes and actions of Germany's pastors and churches during the rise and reign of the Third Reich. It is a masterpiece. For those of us living in a country and time far removed from Hitler's Germany, it is hard to comprehend how that nation's Christiansand especially its ministerscould have been so thoroughly taken in by old Adolf. We assume such an event could never happen ...

January 3, 2008 Iran's leaders are no longer supplying weapons or training to Islamic militants in Iraq, the spokesman for the top U.S. commander in Iraq told The Washington Times. Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, sees Iran as following through on assurances it made to Iraqi and U.S. officials last fall not to assist extremists in Iraq, spokesman Col. Steven Boylan said, adding that other U.S. officials have noted declines in Iranian weapons and funds to Iraqi insurgents. "We are ready to confirm the excellence of the senior Iranian leadership in their pledge to stop the funding, training, equipment and resourcing of the militia special groups," ...
Preemptive Surgical Strike By The Intelligence Community Against The War Party Post Date: 2008-01-04 12:38:47 by Brian S

The issuance of the National Intelligence Estimate on Dec. 3, could be compared to the historic "shot heard round the world;" but, perhaps the characterization given by Barbara Slavin, author of a new book on Iran, is more to the point. As she put it in mid-December at a conference of the Center for American Progress in the U.S. capital, the NIE report was " a preemptive surgical strike by the intelligence community against the war party" of Dick Cheney et al, those who have been building for a military attack against Iran. Since the publication of the report's findings, that the Islamic Republic of Iran has not had a military nuclear program at least since 2005, a ...
