Iran 'could restore ties with US'

Iran 'could restore ties with US' Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has said relations with the US could be restored in the future. In a speech to students, he said the time was not right to restore ties, but if it were ever in Iran's interests he would endorse such a move. The US and Iran cut their diplomatic ties after the 1979 Islamic revolution and the subsequent takeover of the US embassy by militants in Tehran. Relations have been further strained by the row over Iran's nuclear programme. "We have never said these relations should be suspended indefinitely," said Ayatollah Khamenei. But he said now was not the right time because it would ...

M. Collins: Forget the Torture Tapes

CaravaggioMichael Collins"Scoop" Independent NewsWashington, D.C.There's a reflexive tendency to think the worst of the Bush-Cheney administration when scandals like the torture tapes emerge. This tendency is well justified. This administration's defining moment was the Iraq invasion. Over time, it caused death to 1.2 million civilians and the injuries of 1.1 million noncombatants. Just last week we found out that there are now five million orphans in Iraq. How can the administration and their enablers ever top that? Why shouldn't we expect the worst immediately when we hear yet another accusation of criminal or unethical conduct? Destroying torture tapes pales by ...

2007 is record year for Afghanistan: Violence, opium trade, U.S. deaths

The latest: U.S. military deaths, suicide bombings and opium production hit record highs in 2007. Taliban militants killed more than 925 Afghan police, and large swaths of the country remain outside government control.Positive outlook: U.S. officials in Kabul insist things are looking up. The Afghan army is assuming a larger combat role, and militants appear unlikely to mount a major spring offensive, as had been feared a year ago. Training for Afghan police is increasing.Turmoil lingers: Still, six years after the 2001 U.S.-led invasion, violence persists in much of southern Afghanistan where the government has little presence, and recent militant attacks in Pakistan highlight a long-term ...

UK: A friendly morning encounter has left me linked with terrorism

By WILLIAM JF PAUL Police stop and search target I AM now associated with the war on terror. Approached by two uniformed British Transport Police officers as I descended the steps into Waverley Station in Edinburgh, I was a little dismayed. "Good morning, Sir. My colleague and I are stopping you under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act." The police singling me out and applying "wartime" emergency powers after my morning swim was the last thing I expected on a dull Thursday. The Terrorism Act covers the UK. Following the failed attacks on Glasgow International Airport on the last day of June, the whole of Scotland has been under a Section 44 order. It gives police the ...

The U.S. and Pakistan After 9/11 Immediately after 9-11 the U.S. government began barking orders to the world, especially to the Muslim world. Perhaps echoing unconsciously the Christian scripture passages Matthew 12:30 and Luke 11:23, it proclaimed, "Either you are with us, or with the terrorists." Remember those terrifying days, of omnipresent institutionalized ritualistic grief, anger and mandated unity, when any questioning was met with official indignation, threats, or punishment? When everything was supposed to be so clear? When above all, the national need to attack somebody---some Muslims---was supposed to be obvious, and the attack on Afghanistan in particular framed as ...

Anglo-American ambitions behind the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and destabilization of Pakistan By Larry Chin Online Journal Associate Editor Dec 31, 2007, 01:15 Email this article Printer friendly page It has been known for months that the Bush-Cheney administration and its allies have been manuevering to strengthen their political control of Pakistan, paving the way for the expansion and deepening of the “war on terrorism” across the region. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto does not change this agenda. In fact, it simplifies Bush-Cheney’s options. Seeding chaos with a pretext “Delivering democracy to the Muslim world” has been the Orwellian ...

Nicole Gabriel said. Some 300 Ohio Guard members ...

Today, the very idea of a submarine permanently on patrol is mad Her Majesty's Submarine Vigilant is on patrol. As you read these words, down there in the Atlantic or North Sea deeps the Royal Navy Vanguard-class submarine Vigilant is moving at a fast walking pace. She is on a routine 90-day patrol mission, carrying 48 nuclear bombs with enough explosive power to kill a country. Sixteen Trident missiles can speed those bombs with a professional dart-thrower's accuracy to targets 4,600 miles away. Imagine every bomb and shell dropped and fired in World War II all going bang in the same instant. The Vigilant packs a bigger punch than that! In a safe on the vessel is a letter ...

NEW YORK A day after the Huffington Post first reported it, The New York Times has announced that it has indeed hired conservative pundit, and Fox News analyst, Bill Kristol, as a new regular op-ed columnist. Liberal bloggers had been up in arms over the move. Kristol said, in an interview with Politico.com, it gave him some pleasure to see their "heads explode." Kristol was perhaps the most influential pundit of all in promoting the U.S. invasion of Iraq and has strongly defended the move ever since. Times' editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal defended the move. Rosenthal told Politico.com shortly after the official announcement Saturday that he fails to understand ...

-- Two weeks after being acquitted of criminal mischief charges, the anti-Iraq war group calling itself the Seriously P.O.'d Grannies returned Friday to the same sidewalk outside a Northeast Portland U.S. military recruiting center where they were arrested in April. On Good Friday, a half a dozen members of the group were busted after using washable red finger paint to leave handprints on a front window. But a Multnomah County jury found no problem with the protest, even though a judge cited them for leaving graffiti. Joseph Rose of The Oregonian was outside the recruiting station as the grannies -- and a few grandpas -- made their return. Marine and Army recruiters inside the ...

PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Reports that Poland's troops in Afghanistan may have committed a war crime against defenseless civilians has shocked the country's public, which remains sensitive to the performance of the Polish military abroad. In August separate Polish and U.S. patrols were reportedly struck by explosive devices. Polish reinforcements soon arrived and opened fire on a nearby village. The mortar attack on the village of Nangar Khel, close to the Afghan-Pakistani border, killed eight Afghani civilians and left three women crippled. A pregnant woman and a child were among the dead. Underlying that idea is the notion that human beings have pugnacious inner drives that require an outlet for aggressive behavior if they are to achieve their full potential in a highly competitive world in which people have to dominate others to guarantee their own survival. This theory is ...

Brownies Will Get You Five to Ten A Boondocks Chapter Christmas at Fort Bragg By Jason Hurd On the morning of December 17, 2007, Steve Casey and I awoke bright and early at the Quaker House in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Steve and I had driven nearly three hundred miles from our home-base in Asheville, North Carolina to distribute holiday gift bags to the wonderful servicewomen and men stationed at our nation's busiest military post--Fort Bragg. Our friends and supporters in Asheville stuffed nearly three hundred small lunch bags full of holiday cards, chocolates, cookies and home-made brownies. The gift bags had a humble feel to them: brown paper lunch sacks with the tops folded ...
