Go Back to Bed America

Post-America--Is there any truth left?

Years ago now, a pastor who is a friend of mine did a lecture series on American history. He ended his series with “reconstruction” in the South and took it no further. Someone once asked him why he had stopped at “reconstruction” and his answer was “because everything after “reconstruction” is post-America.” In other words, the War of Northern Aggression and the ensuing “reconstruction” spelled the end for the America given to us by the founders. It was and is no more. What we live in today is not the country our founders gave us. It is an entirely different animal, and not one we are necessarily better off getting along with. Since ...

Revolt of the Cheeseheads nytimes * Share * retweet * Email * Print NANCY FOLBRE, On Monday February 28, 2011, 6:00 am EST Nancy Folbre is an economics professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. No matter what the short-term outcome, the upsurge of resistance in Wisconsin to efforts by Gov. Scott Walker to crush public sector unions will make history. The extraordinarily passionate yet disciplined, virtually nonstop demonstrations in the state capitol building have dramatized opposition to a national Republican strategy: tax breaks for the rich, reductions in public sector wages and benefits, privatization of public enterprises and strategic investments in political ...

Robert Fisk: The corrupt, feudal world of the House of Saud The Saud family is a real House that Jack built. Its thousands of princes are sublimely unworthy of rule Wednesday, 14 May 2003 Poor old Saudis. It takes quite a lot to evoke sympathy for the head-chopping, hand-severing, anti-feminist, misogynist, feudal, anti-democratic Saudis. These, after all, are the folks who bankrolled the Islamist resistance to the Soviet army in Afghanistan. This is the nation whose interior minister used to have cosy chats with Osama bin Laden in the Saudi embassy in Islamabad. Indeed, this is the country that chose Osama to be its "prince" in the campaign against Soviet atheism – its ...

The Political Economy of Government Employee Unions (Thomas DiLorenzo)

The main reason why so many state and local governments are bankrupt, or on the verge of bankruptcy, is the combination of government-run monopolies and government-employee unions. Government-employee unions have vastly more power than do private-sector unions because the entities they work for are typically monopolies. When the employees of a grocery store, for example, go on strike and shut down the store, consumers can simply shop elsewhere, and the grocery-store management is perfectly free to hire replacement workers. In contrast, when a city teachers' or garbage-truck drivers' union goes on strike, there is no school and no garbage collection as long as the strike goes on. In ...

"The Cynical Dance Macabre" is the title of the most recent reflection by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro. The policy of plunder imposed by the United States and their NATO allies in the Middle East has gone into a crisis. It has inevitably unraveled with the high cost of grain, the effects of which can be felt more forcefully in the Arab countries where, in spite of their huge resources of oil, the shortage of water, areas covered by desert and the generalized poverty of the people contrast with the enormous resources coming from the oil possessed by the privileged sectors. While food prices triple, real estate fortunes and the treasures of the aristocratic ...

Behind the Arab Revolt Is a Word We Dare Not Speak Thursday 24 February 2011 by: John Pilger, t r u t h o u t | News Analysis Behind the Arab Revolt Is a Word We Dare Not Speak Former CIA officer Ray McGovern. (Photo: Cheryl Biren) Shortly after the invasion of Iraq in 2003, I interviewed Ray McGovern, one of an elite group of CIA officers who prepared then-president George W. Bush's daily intelligence brief. At that time, McGovern was at the apex of the "national security" monolith that is American power and had retired with presidential plaudits. On the eve of the invasion, he and 45 other senior officers of the CIA and other intelligence agencies wrote to Bush that the ...

Blood In Libya, Silence In The Nanny States

On the English service of Al Jazeera, it was heartbreaking to hear the opposition under gunfire in Libya and Bahrain begging for an intervention of the "international community". But the international community, so swift to lecture Mubarak and Ben Ali by way of the spokesperson of UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, is doing nothing. What's going on? Apart from the USA, there is very little reaction or indignation. It is true that the term "indignation" only pops up when it concerns the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The US has also vetoed a hypocritical, so-called "Arab" resolution against Israel in the UN. These "Arab" countries had better look ...

Budget Baloney (1): Why Social Security Isn’t a Problem for 26 Years, and the Best Way to Fix It Permanently Wednesday 16 February 2011 by: Robert Reich | Robert Reich's Blog | Op-Ed New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican presidential hopeful, says in order to “save” Social Security the retirement age should be raised. The media are congratulating him for his putative “courage.” Deficit hawks are proclaiming Social Security one of the big entitlements that has to be cut in order to reduce the budget deficit. This is all baloney. In a former life I was a trustee of the Social Security trust fund. So let me set the record straight. Social Security ...

Why Do They Hate Social Security? Friday 18 February 2011 by: Joe Conason, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed Among the mysteries of modern politics in America is why so many of our leading pundits and politicians persistently seek to undermine Social Security, that enduring and successful emblem of active government. In the current atmosphere of budgetary panic, self-proclaimed "centrists" are joining with ideologues of the right in yet another campaign against the program -- and yet again they are misinforming the public about its purposes, costs and prospects. Among the puzzling aspects of the crusade against Social Security is the zeal that animates its enemies, as if the present and ...

Things Don't Go Better With the Koch Brothers Submitted by mark karlin on Sat, 02/12/2011 - 5:52pm. * EditorBlog MARK KARLIN, BUZZFLASH EDITOR FOR TRUTHOUT Things don't go better with the Koch brothers. It's amazing that many middle-class Americans fall for the siren song that government is the source of all evil when many global corporations are putting US citizens out of work; sitting on profits generated by gullible consumers; and polluting our air, water and food. That's why the Koch brothers are the latest in a long line of ultra-wealthy, right-wing investors in running the federal government through owning politicians and financing propaganda that diverts ...
