Obama Ignores Eisenhower at Country's, World's Peril Saturday 15 January 2011 by: Melvin A. Goodman, t r u t h o u t | News Analysis On January 17, 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued his prophetic warning about the military-industrial complex, anticipating the increased political, economic, military and even cultural influence of the Pentagon and its allies. Several weeks earlier, he had privately told his senior advisers in the Oval Office, "God help this country when someone sits in this chair who doesn't know the military as well as I do." Several months after his inauguration in 1953, he warned against warfare that had "humanity hanging from a ...

How bad is the economy? Women are having sex with their husbands/boyfriends because they can't afford batteries. Jury Duty is now considered a good-paying job. I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail. African television stations are now showing 'Sponsor an American Child' commercials! I ordered a burger at McDonald's and the kid behind the counter asked, "Can you afford fries with that?" CEO's are now playing miniature golf. Karl Marx and “Reconstruction”

In his rather infamous book “Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution” James M. McPherson has enthusiastically quoted Karl Marx’s remarks about Abraham Lincoln. McPherson was one of the first people I read, years ago now, that openly admitted the Lincoln/Marx political love-fest. He quoted Marx when Marx referred to Lincoln as “…the single-minded son of the working class” who has led his “country through the matchless struggle for the rescue of an enchained race and the reconstruction of a social world.” The key words here are “reconstruction of a social world.” You can argue about what Marx meant all you want, but it is of interest to note that when the ...

Gabrielle Giffords should stop supporting the deaths of innocent people

It has been one week since the tragic massacre in Tuscon Arizona, where six innocent people were killed countless others injured. Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords miraculously survived and is reportedly improving. Dramatic photographs were released of her astronaught husband holding her hand at her hospital bedside. They have been posted on Gifford's campaign website. So much political rhetoric has been ballied about in the wake of the shootings, the end result being death threats against the Tuscon Tea Party leader, 'unprecedented' death threats against Sarah Palin, and a demand for Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik to resign or be forcibly recalled from office. One ...

U.S. Had Helo Deal With Ousted Tunisian Dictator * By Spencer Ackerman Email Author * January 14, 2011 | * 3:10 pm | * Categories: Gadgets and Gear * Check out the #sidibouzid Twitter hashtag and you’ll see real-time updates from a popular coup in Tunisia that’s ousted the kleptocratic dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. Months of unrest over unemployment and rising food prices — pushed along by WikiLeaked disclosures — forced Ben Ali to flee to Paris. As it turned out, the Obama administration tried last year to give him what would amount to a parting gift: $282 million worth of upgrades to Ben Ali’s helicopter fleet. The First Twitter Revolution? Not so fast. The Internet can take some credit for toppling Tunisia's government, but not all of it. BY ETHAN ZUCKERMAN | JANUARY 14, 2011 Friday evening, Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali boarded a jet for Malta, leaving his prime minister to face streets filled with protesters demanding a change of government in the North African country. The protests began weeks earlier in the central city of Sidi Bouzid, sparked by the suicide of Mohamed Bouazizi, an unemployed university graduate whose informal vegetable stall was shuttered by the police. His despair exemplified the frustration that many Tunisians felt with their contracting economy, high ...

The Tucson Shooter and the Case for Involuntary Commitment

Warning label: This article will make civil libertarians unhappy. Read at your own risk. We are embroiled, alas, in a politicized argument about the slaughter in Tucson. While most of the charges being flung about rest on a scanty basis (at best), the most important and least contestable facts are getting lost: Jared Lee Loughner was mentally ill when he pulled the trigger, there were multiple signs of his descent into delusion over the past year, and no one did very much about it. To be sure, the authorities at Pima Community College finally suspended him after five contacts with the police and conditioned his return on clearance from a mental health professional. Police delivered the ...

“Fifty years ago, it made sense to assert that mental illnesses are not diseases, but it makes no sense to say so today. Debate about what counts as mental illness has been replaced by legislation about the medicalization and demedicalization of behavior. Old diseases such as homosexuality and hysteria disappear. New diseases such as gambling and smoking appear.” So writes the iconoclastic psychiatrist Thomas Szasz. Almost 50 years ago Szasz published The Myth of Mental Illness. It changed the political framework in which mental illness was addressed by laying the foundation for a concept Szasz developed through a series of books, including The Manufacture of Madness (1970). That ...

How propaganda poisons the mind - and our discourse By Glenn Greenwald * How propaganda poisons the mind - and our discourse Twitter Alan Rusbridger (updated below - Update II - Update III) Last week, on January 3, The Guardian published a scathing Op-Ed by James Richardson blaming WikiLeaks for endangering the life of Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the democratic opposition in Zimbabwe. Richardson -- a GOP operative, contributor to RedState.com, and a for-hire corporate spokesman -- pointed to a cable published by WikiLeaks in which American diplomats revealed that Tsvangirai, while publicly opposing American sanctions on his country, had privately urged their continuation as a means ...

Ayn Rand: The Virtue of Selfishness--How Does One Lead A Rational Life In An Irrational Society?

How Does One Lead A Rational Life In An Irrational Society? Ayn Rand The Virtue of Selfishness 1962 I will confine my answer to a single, fundamental aspect of this question. I will name only one principle, the opposite of the idea which is so prevalent today and which is responsible for the spread of evil in the world. That principle is: One must never fail to pronounce a moral judgment. Nothing can corrupt and disintegrate a culture or a man’s character as thoroughly as does the precept of moral agnosticism, the idea that one must never pass moral judgment on others, that one must be morally tolerant of anything, that the good consists of never distinguishing good from evil. It is ...

If a federal judge was murdered by a gunman on any other day, it would have been even BIGGER news. Especially if he was pro-abortion. However, this was a disposable federal judge. Not worthy of mention. Judge John Roll was the leading judicial voice supporting Sheriff Richard Mack's Tenth Amendment lawsuit against the Feds. Sheriff Mack has stated that Judge Roll was by far the best Federal Judge in the U.S. ...

The ongoing discussion of the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords makes an outstanding example of the utter insanity and profound hypocrisy which the belief in "government" creates. Specifically, nearly all the related discussions about violence have turned reality upside- down, backwards, and inside out. Leftists are having conniption fits about the political ads by Sarah Palin, showing Giffords in "crosshairs," screaming that that counts as advocating violence. There are several ways in which this complaint is completely batty. 1) Leftist constantly advocate violence. "Taxation," as one example, is the forced confiscation of wealth backed by the threat of ...

Liberal Media was Already Prepared for Violence in Tucson Matt Ryan Infowars.com January 11, 2011 Editor’s Note from Alex Jones: What we have here is a clear case of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The national and local media knew exactly what they were doing. They hyped to a pool of 300 million Americans over and over again that a deranged tea partier is going to gun politicians down. Then, a highly suggestible paranoid schizophrenic acts on the hype and the media instantly blames the tea party. If they continue to hype this, it will cause more deranged copycats to act. The terrible shooting in Tucson, Arizona left six dead including federal Judge John Roll and critically injured ...

The Left's Exploitation of the Tucson Tragedy

The Tucson shooting was an unspeakable horror, a characteristic exercise in American democracy — a townhall meeting outside a Safeway store — interrupted by gunshots and bloodshed. The gunman targeted Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot through the head but survived, and killed six and wounded thirteen others. Any time someone attempts to assassinate a public official it is an attack on the entire country, and the Tucson shooting has been appropriately treated as such by politicians across the political spectrum. We barely knew all the facts in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, though, before this vicious act was being milked for political advantage by ...

The majority of the world will suffer economic catastrophe, led by the final collapse of the US and UK and the economic depression of China. Smaller nations dependent upon these three: such as Venezuela, Brazil, Australia and others will see themselves driven to the edge or at least to their knees, though none will fall over the cliff. Other nations, such as Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, South Africa and Mexico will face their final Armageddon, becoming nations in name only (Somalia is already just that). Depending on how hard the US/UK land this year, they may just join this august list. Finally will be a series of wars: Argentina vs UK, where Argentina will, with minimal conflict take the ...

The AMERICAN DREAM is a 30 minute animated film that shows you how you’ve been scammed by the most basic elements of our government system. All of us Americans strive for the American Dream, and this film shows you why your dream is getting farther and farther away. Do you know how your money is created? Or how banking works? Why did housing prices skyrocket and then plunge? Do you really know what the Federal Reserve System is and how it affects you every single day? THE AMERICAN DREAM takes an entertaining but hard hitting look at how the problems we have today are nothing new, and why leaders throughout our history have warned us and fought against the current type of financial ...

Two Sicknesses On Display in Arizona The shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of several people by gunman Jared Loughner in Arizona yesterday has revealed two sicknesses. The first and most serious is the sickness living in Loughner's head. Evidence in the form of farewell videos, internet postings, and the recollections of people who knew him reveal a profoundly disturbed person who had veered far into a paranoid world. Loughner's complaints about government mind control and other rants were not "anti-government" in any political sense, but anti-government or anarchist in the Ted Kazynski-deranged sense. We do not know Loughner's motives, but ...

Diary headline: "My CongressWOMAN voted against Nancy Pelosi! And is now DEAD to me!" There are also several references to "dead" in the comment thread. All of it now deleted - something Kos does on a regular basis when he wishes to change history. Kos also seems to have forgotten a posting of his calling for putting a ...
