JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - An influential Republican senator suggested Thursday that Congress might want to consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline and, in turn possibly ease fuel prices. Today I went out and bought one box of rifle ammo ($34.99!!), a Shakespeare fishing pole and reel combo, and a couple of lures. Oil change for my truck is next, I'll buy some pistol ammo and more rifle ammo next week.

Definitions of patriotism proliferate, but in the American context patriotism must involve not only devotion to American texts (something that distinguishes our patriotism from European nationalism) but also an abiding belief in the inherent and enduring goodness of the American nation. We might need to change this or that policy or law, fix this or that problem, but at the end of the day the patriotic American believes that America is fundamentally good as it is. The notion that the election of Barack Obama to the presidency will inaugurate a "post-racial" America, an America that has gone "beyond race" as Obama has put it, has been widely accepted, even by many conservatives. I'm not sure that anyone has ever explained what this post-racial condition of America would actually look like. During the last week or two, the country lost a couple of national treasures. First Tim Russert, then George Carlin passed within days of each other. At first glance, these two icons couldn't seem more different. Russert was a devoutly religious, serious family man while Carlin was an extremely irreverent single comedian.
