Ron Paul vs. Rudy “The Thug” Giuliani [Full Thread]

In response to Ron Paul’s reasonable and informed contention that our interventionist foreign policy created the “blowback” that gave rise to Al Qaeda, and 9/11, Rudy Giuliani burbled “I don’t think I’ve ever heard that!” Of course he hasn’t heard it: he’s so busy pandering to the worst instincts of red-state fascists Republicans, calling for a national ID card, and drooling at the thought of torture that he has no time for a reality-based assessment of American foreign policy. That bullying would-be Mafia don, who looks and acts like someone out of “The Sopranos,” demanded that Ron Paul “withdraw his remarks and tell us he ...

The Anger Of The Left

Located Here. The Anger Of The Left by Thomas Sowell That people on the political left have a certain set of opinions, just as people do in other parts of the ideological spectrum, is not surprising. What is surprising, however, is how often the opinions of those on the left are accompanied by hostility and even hatred. Particular issues can arouse passions here and there for anyone with any political views. But, for many on the left, indignation is not a sometime thing. It is a way of life. How often have you seen conservatives or libertarians take to the streets, shouting angry slogans? How often have conservative students on campus shouted down a visiting speaker or rioted to ...

A Reply To Prof. Weissberg

A Reply To Prof. Weissberg Jared Taylor, American Renaissance, March 1999 Most readers of AR will agree with Prof. Weissberg’s first four numbered points. Blacks do not have the same average level of abilities as whites, and therefore do not reap the same rewards. Society has discovered no effective way to improve black abilities, and blacks have a well-deserved reputation for violence. Here, however, I part company with an analysis that I think both misinterprets the causes of black violence and is inadequate from a nation-building and perhaps even moral perspective. As a factual matter, I believe Prof. Weissberg is mistaken about the likelihood that blacks would react violently to ...

America's long Iraq nightmare

Bush has declared many spurious "turning points" during the war, but the reality is a failing occupation -- at great cost to the U.S. and Middle East. May. 14, 2007 | At 3 a.m. on Jan. 11, 2007, a fleet of American helicopters made a sudden swoop on the long-established Iranian liaison office in the city of Arbil in northern Iraq. Their mission was to capture two senior Iranian security officials, Mohammed Jafari, the deputy head of the Iranian National Security Council, and Gen. Minojahar Frouzanda, the head of intelligence of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. What made the American raid so extraordinary is that both men were in Iraq at the official invitation of Iraqi President ...

Commentary: The bookworm president
Post Date: 2007-05-14 23:03:13 by Ferret Mike

WASHINGTON, May. 14 (UPI) -- Two of Washington's best-informed men confirmed it so it must be true. President Bush and his consigliere Karl Rove bet on who had read the most books in a year. Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, told friends Rove won with 117 books and Bush was a close second with 104 books. Unhappy over his loss to his close confidant, Bush asked for a recount -- in words. And the president won by 1.7 percent. The story is not apocryphal. In fact, none other than McConnell's predecessor as the nation's top spymaster, John Negroponte, now deputy secretary of state, confirmed it. The president, he explained, reads two to three books a week and ...

Why Karl Rove Cared [About getting rid of attys.]

Why would Karl Rove want to fire a bunch of U.S. attorneys? If you think it seems out of character, you don't know Rove -- or more precisely, you don't know the two sides of Rove. President Bush's powerful adviser is one part spreadsheet-carrying, vote-counting political wonk, and one part no-holds-barred, brass-knuckled political operative. Vote-counting Rove knows that -- particularly in battleground states, where a few votes can make all the difference -- every little bit helps. Brass-knuckled Rove has energetically used government power to meet political ends. Vote-counting Rove has long been obsessed by voter fraud, either because (according to him) it threatens the ...

Defeat, retreat and repeat

Defeat, retreat and repeat By Cal Thomas Syndicated columnist For the sake of argument, let’s say former CIA Director George Tenet is right in his book and that Vice President Dick Cheney pushed too hard with questionable or inaccurate intelligence because of a predisposition to go to war in Iraq and topple Saddam Hussein. So what? We can’t go back and fix the mistakes of the past. Only two choices are available: victory or defeat. Let us assume the Democratic left is right and we should pull U.S. forces out as early as Oct. 1, or perhaps a few months later, but certainly before the next president takes office, because the Bush administration’s policy in Iraq has ...

Military Standards Falling

Are we lowering standards? I recently attended a Warrior Leaders Course graduation. I was told by my soldier after graduation that of the 140 soldiers in the company, only 83 passed the initial physical fitness test or height and weight standards. I’ve found that as per All Army Activities message 075/2007, DTG 171414Z, a soldier may attend WLC or any noncommissioned officer school, and while there never pass the physical fitness test or meet height and weight requirements, yet still graduate. Will we lower the standards for selection at senior-level boards as well when these “graduates” compete for promotion? Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth O. Preston posted on his Web ...

Illinois Tax Implosion - The political limits of "universal" health care.

"Universal" government health care has once again returned as a political cause, with many Democrats believing it's the key to White House victory in 2008. They might want to study last week's news from Illinois, where Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich's tax increase to finance health care became the political rout of the year. The Democratic House in Springfield killed the proposal, 107-0, after Mr. Blagojevich came out against his own idea when it became clear he was going to be humiliated. Only a month earlier he had said he was prepared to wage "the fight of the century" in defense of his plan to impose a $7.6 billion "gross receipts tax" on ...

Ron Paul: Security, Washington-Style

May 14, 2007 Congress voted this past week to authorize nearly $40 billion for the Homeland Security Department, but the result will likely continue to be more bureaucracy and less security for Americans. Five years into this new Department, Congress still cannot agree on how to handle the mega-bureaucracy it created, which means there has been no effective oversight of the department. While Congress remains in disarray over how to fund and oversee the department, we can only wonder whether we are more vulnerable than we were before Homeland Security was created. I was opposed to the creation of a new Homeland Security Department from the beginning. Only in Washington would anyone call ...

The Red Hand Of Deception

The Red Hand Of Deception By Ted Lang Exclusive to http://Rense.com 5-12-7 Reiterating my basic philosophy of government and its politics, I again offer that there are two types of people: good ones and bad ones. There are people who feel Man is basically evil, and then there are those who see their fellow human beings as basically good. The folks in the former category may conclude that there are some exceptions to their rule, but not enough to change their overall philosophy that big government is needed to force people to do the right thing and to behave. The libertarian view point, and the one I support, offers that people are basically good. Oddly, the very same people who believe in ...

Why Arabs Lost Past Glories

Why Arabs Lost Past Glories Khaled Batarfi Why are the Arabs so low in so many measurements? Even before the dissolution of the Ottoman Caliphate in the beginning of the 20th century, we went down a slope that took us to where we stand today — at the bottom of the achievement ladder. Collectively, we contribute less than most nations to world progress and civilization. Apart from a few notable achievements in a few better-off countries, most Arabs live in an environment of servility. Slaves do not initiate or innovate. They can only follow orders. And if, as it happens so often, they have ignorant and arrogant masters, even the smartest of slaves won’t dare to do any better. ...

Fighting Terror: Where US Went Wrong Khaled Batarfi “Why most terrorists these days are Muslims?” my American friend asked. I answered: “When did that start? Ten years ago? Why do you think? Because they hate your freedom, democracy and prosperity? You have been free, democratic and prosperous even more in the past, why now all of a sudden? And why against the US, not Switzerland or Sweden, who, by the way, has more freedom, democracy and prosperity? America is an intelligent nation. After any school shooting, the whole country asks: Why? They go all ways by all means looking for answers. Academia, media and every intellectual and intelligence circle investigate the latest ...

Ahmadinejad blames U.S. for Mideast ills By JIM KRANE, Associated Press Writer 24 minutes ago DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Iran's president led a raucous anti-American rally on Sunday in this tightly controlled U.S. ally in the Persian Gulf, a day after a low-key visit by Vice President Dick Cheney aimed at countering Tehran's influence in the region. ADVERTISEMENT Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a cheering crowd that America was to blame for creating instability and robbing the region of its wealth. "We are telling you to leave the region. This is for your benefit and the benefit of your nation," Ahmadinejad shouted to the crowd of thousands at a soccer stadium. "The ...

From Hitler to Pinochet and beyond, history shows there are certain steps that any would-be dictator must take to destroy constitutional freedoms. And, argues Naomi Wolf, George Bush and his administration seem to be taking them all Last autumn, there was a military coup in Thailand. The leaders of the coup took a number of steps, rather systematically, as if they had a shopping list. In a sense, they did. Within a matter of days, democracy had been closed down: the coup leaders declared martial law, sent armed soldiers into residential areas, took over radio and TV stations, issued restrictions on the press, tightened some limits on travel, and took certain activists into custody. They ...

DEMOCRATS & IRAQ: HERE'S HILLARY By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN May 13, 2007 -- FOR those who are too obtuse to understand Sen. Hillary Clinton's simple and clear position on Iraq, the following is an attempt to summarize it: * She voted in the Senate for H.J. Res. 114, the "Authorization of the Use of Military Force Against Iraq," in October 2002. But now she wants to repeal it. Why? Because, according to Hillary, President Bush misinterpreted the "Authorization of the Use of Military Force Against Iraq" resolution to mean that the use of military force against Iraq had been authorized by Congress. * At the time of her vote, she stated that her vote ...

Washington, D.C., May 11, 2007: “A number of subjects that ought to be of interest to the public, aside of the fatal crushing to death of our President by the anaconda of public opinion. The first subject deals with the new French President, Nicolas Sarkozy. Yesterday, there was a top level phone call between the Israeli Embassy and Vice President Cheney’s office. One of his top staff is a friend. The call dealt with the election of Sarkozy and an actual quote was…’Our man is in and we can now talk!’ It is no secret here that the U.S. contributed heavily to Sarkozy’s political war chest in the recent election. There are a number of reasons why we, and Israel, ...

Cheney throws down the gauntlet Gulf News From the safety of a US aircraft carrier somewhere in the Arabian Gulf, Vice-President Dick Cheney increased the anti-Iran rhetoric. Vowing the US - and its allies - would not allow Tehran to restrict sea traffic in the Gulf, nor develop nuclear arms; his comments were a deliberate provocation, both in timing and location, to Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. It is more than likely Ahmadinejad will respond, initially by equally strident rhetoric, but ultimately is anyone's guess. And it is that unpredictability that makes so many nervous. Cheney has been on a short visit to Middle East countries the US sees as allies. So making ...

What I have been taught in college Craig B. Goldberg Today I finished my third year of college. This time next year I will graduate with a degree in history in secondary education. What have I learned over the past 3 years? Well, I'll tell you. * I've learned that Iran isn't a big threat to Israel or the United States, and that it's all right for them to have nuclear bombs simply because we do. It's only fair. I've learned terrorism is overrated, and that it really isn't a big threat. Bush, on the other hand, uses the same tactics as Hitler and is just as evil and dangerous. * Universal health care will be successful in America if the mean, evil conservatives ...

The girl scout who helps an unsteady old man across the street could also have pushed him aside. The aftermath of each action engenders a new range of moral possibilities. Having pushed him aside, she might then regret her act and return to help him. Even when we’ve made bad choices, acted out of indifference or greed rather than compassion and generosity, another choice awaits us: how to compound or rectify the immoral act, stay the course or imagine how to salvage some ...

Posted on May 11, 2007 WASHINGTON—The Bush administration says that its zero-tolerance policy against terrorism applies to all suspected evildoers, not just Muslims, and that its zero-tolerance policy against Cuba is a principled position, not just an exercise in pandering to the implacable anti-Castro exiles in Miami. On both counts, evidence suggests otherwise. The fact is that Luis Posada Carriles, an accused terrorist who entered the United States illegally and was taken into custody by authorities, is not being kept in solitary confinement and dragged out for occasional waterboarding. As of this writing, he is a free man. Posada, 79, has a long history of violent opposition to ...

Impeach Bush or Get Rid of the Impeachment Clause

Congress has an obligation to defend the Constitution against attack. If it fails in its duty, then it should at least have the decency to give a proper burial to the impeachment clause that the Founders gave them to use for that purpose. What is it about impeachment that has the Democratic Party leadership so frightened? Talking with members of Congress, one hears the same refrain: "I know Bush and Cheney have committed impeachable crimes, but impeachment is a bad idea." The rationales offered are many, but all are either specious or based upon flawed reasoning. Let’s consider them separately: Excuse one, offered by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is that impeachment would be a ...
