Beltway Democrats are seriously flawed, but the election is still critically important Post Date: 2006-09-30 02:52:00 by Morgana le Fay

Now that the torture and detention bill will become law, it is necessary to focus on the political implications of what happened yesterday and, more broadly, what has been done to our country by the Bush administration and the blindly loyal Congress for the last five years. It goes without saying that the conduct of Democrats generally (meaning their collective behavior) was far, far short of anything noble, courageous or principled. And one could, if one were so inclined, spend every day from now until November 7 criticizing the strategic mistakes and lack of principle of Beltway Democrats and still not exhaust the list. But that's all besides the point at the moment, because -- right ...
And what did the Democrats get for selling out? Post Date: 2006-09-30 02:47:31 by Morgana le Fay

The New York Times reports: The [military detention] bills ultimate passage was assured on Wednesday when Democrats agreed to forgo a filibuster in return for consideration of the [Specter] amendment [on habeas, which lost by a 48-51 vote]. Any changes in the Senate bill, however, would have made it impossible for Republican leaders to meet their goal of sending the bill to the White House before adjourning on Friday to hit the campaign trail. Underscoring the political stakes involved, White House spokesman Tony Snow said today that President Bush will emphasize Democratic opposition to the bill in campaign appearances. Hell be citing some of the comments that members ...

Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor and former Baghdad bureau chief Rajiv Chandrasekaran has written a behind-the-scenes account of the Bush administration appointees who ran Iraq after the US invasion. Invoking the embattled ex-Director of FEMA, Chandrasekaran calls them Michael Brown x100. [includes rush transcript] In Washington, a federal inspector testified before Congress on Thursday on how private contractors have failed in their efforts to rebuild Iraq. The inspector, Stuart Bowen, criticized three companies in particular: Parsons, Bechtel and the Halliburton subsidiary KBR. Bowen said that of the fourteen major projects built by Parsons in Iraq, 13 of them were ...

A little intimidating, if you ask me. My family went close to here a few weeks ago. Did not see this, or really wanted to, after we entered the first part of the "Black Hole of the White Canyon". Not my photo. If you see a stream of water comming..... I would guess the water level at this point was close to twice the level of the debris.
The erosion of the Arab state Post Date: 2006-09-29 23:46:14 by Burkeman1

The Israeli assault on Lebanon has poignantly brought two truths home: that some Arab states are unable to respond to ever- mounting external threats, and that the burden of homeland protection is increasingly shifting from the standard political order to non-state actors. The Lebanese case offers a glimpse of the shape of the balance of powers in the Middle East in years to come. The modern state, we should recall, derives its legitimacy from the right to monopolise and use the instruments of organised violence for the purpose of maintaining internal stability and civil peace on the one hand; and securing its borders, or what is conventionally referred to as national sovereignty, on ...
ELITISM IS DIALECTICAL TERRORISM Post Date: 2006-09-29 15:19:39 by Tauzero

ELITISM IS DIALECTICAL TERRORISM By Niki Raapana September 26, 2006 http://NewsWithViews.com The biggest threat to the United States of America in the 21st century is dialectical terrorism. Dialectical terrorists believe that conflicts between opposites are part of a natural human progression to spiritual and cultural perfection. They all share the common belief that they are ordained by God to force the world to progress dialectically, and they claim their dialectical ideology is the most reasonable and logical way to think. They tell Americans if they don't understand it's only because they're too stupid and un-reasonable. "It is this theory, sir, which furnishes to the ...
Stay the course in Iraq? What course? Post Date: 2006-09-29 11:29:11 by Ferret Mike

WASHINGTON President Bush likes to say he will stay the course in Iraq. The question is: What course? Is it the course that has so far cost some 2,700 American lives, 100 Iraqi lives a day, and an estimated expenditure of $300 billion so far? Is it the course, which, according to a leaked consensus estimate of the US intelligence community, has made Iraq a primary recruitment vehicle for the next generation of violent extremists and weakened the global fight against terrorism? The president has said that Iraq is the central battleground in the war against terrorism. But the intelligence agencies suggest that if this is so, it is only because the war has made it so. Intelligence ...
The Public School Nightmare Post Date: 2006-09-29 06:06:00 by YertleTurtle

I want you to consider the frightening possibility that we are spending far too much money on schooling, not too little. I want you to consider that we have too many people employed in interfering with the way children grow up--and that all this money and all these people, all the time we take out of children's lives and away from their homes and families and neighbourhoods and private explorations--gets in the way of education. That seems radical, I know. Surely in modern technological society it is the quantity of schooling and the amount of money you spend on it that buys value. And yet last year in St. Louis, I heard a vice-president of IBM tell an audience of people assembled to ...
Well, Here’s a Question… [Where are all the patriots screaming for strict constructionist judges?] Post Date: 2006-09-28 21:51:07 by Morgana le Fay

Article I, Section 9, Clause 2 of the United States Constitution states as follows: The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it. It expressly forbids suspension of the writ of habeas corpus except under very specific and highly limited circumstances and as we are neither dealing with a case of rebellion or invasion at the time of this attempted enactment of this torture law in Congress, I am really wondering on what leg they propose to stand when arguing constitutionality at the first legal challenge to this law. And if it is deemed unconstitutional, as it is likely to be, then ...

A Vote That Will Live in Infamy -- Who Will Betray Their Country Today and Who Will Stand Up for America? Post Date: 2006-09-28 21:44:45 by Morgana le Fay

You must read this New York Times editorial on the detainee bill that Senators will be voting on today. They are not the only ones saying this, it is just a simple summary of the one of the worst bills in American history. This piece of legislation guts what this country is founded on. As the New York Times explains, it is our Alien and Sedition Acts. There is no excuse. Democrats who vote for this bill because of cowardly political expediency will forever be tainted. We will never forget. This is the most un-American bill I have ever seen. Republicans have proven themselves to be craven sycophants who will do Vice President Cheney's bidding no matter what, over and over. There is almost ...
Rushing Off a Cliff [Two Party Failure on Bush's Torture Bill] Post Date: 2006-09-28 21:42:00 by Morgana le Fay

Heres what happens when this irresponsible Congress railroads a profoundly important bill to serve the mindless politics of a midterm election: The Bush administration uses Republicans fear of losing their majority to push through ghastly ideas about antiterrorism that will make American troops less safe and do lasting damage to our 217-year-old nation of laws while actually doing nothing to protect the nation from terrorists. Democrats betray their principles to avoid last-minute attack ads. Our democracy is the big loser. Republicans say Congress must act right now to create procedures for charging and trying terrorists because the men accused of plotting the ...

Some people will never vote for someone from another party so I propose the following Clean Slate Pledge be taken by candidates running in each district from the Republican, Democratic, Green, Libertarian and other parties in 2008. We hereby pledge to refuse all money and influence from the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission, the Bilderberg Society and AIPAC ( the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.) You will have to educate the public about money laundering. Ask them why government everywhere seems to be so corrupt. Then ask if this might have something to do with the 500 billion dollars a year in bribes that the banks launder. Ask them why there are so many ...

The headlines about them are, of course, entirely wrong. It is not essential that a past President, bullied and sandbagged by a monkey posing as a newscaster, finally lashed back. It is not important that the current Presidents "portable public chorus" has described his predecessors tone as "crazed." Our tone should be crazed. The nations freedoms are under assault by an administration whose policies can do us as much damage as Al-Qaeda; the nations "marketplace of ...

The NY Post: "POWDER PUFF SPOOKS KEITH" Keith Olbermann flipped out when he opened his home mail yesterday. The acerbic host of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" was terrified when he opened a suspicious-looking letter with a California postmark and a batch of white powder poured out. Why Some Republicans Want to Lose Post Date: 2006-09-27 18:55:54 by Morgana le Fay

Disillusioned Conservatives Believe Party Has Gone Adrift, See Value in Democratic Congress WASHINGTON -- As the White House and its Republican allies on Capitol Hill work to retain control of Congress in November's elections, a small but vocal band of conservative iconoclasts say they would prefer to see their own party lose. The array of former members of Congress and officials from Republican administrations dating to the 1970s are using opinion articles, speeches and interviews to make the surprising -- and, to many of their friends and colleagues, near-heretical -- argument that it would be better for the country if their party lost. Some say they plan to vote Democratic for the ...

10,000 gay people were slaughtered in the Nazi death-camps. Many more were humiliated, jailed, deported, ethnically cleansed, or castrated. One gay survivor of the camps, LD Classen von Neudegg, has written about his experiences. A snapshot: Three men had tried to escape one night. They were captured, and when they returned they had the word homo scrawled across their clothing. They were placed on a block and whipped. Then they were forced to beat a drum and cheer, Hurrah! Were back! Hurrah! Then they were hanged. This is one of the milder events documented in his book. So the idea of a gay fascist seems ridiculous. Yet when the British National ...

Bush dismisses Clinton critique as "finger-pointing" By Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday dismissed as "finger-pointing" criticism from his predecessor Bill Clinton of his counter-terrorism efforts in the months leading up to the September 11 attacks. Click to learn more... Clinton, angrily defending his own administration's attempts to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, had accused the Bush administration of doing far less to stop the al Qaeda leader before the 2001 hijack plane attacks. Bush, who is trying to stave off a Democratic takeover of Congress in November, seemed to bristle when asked about Clinton, only to ...

Rafael Correa also said he would not extend the U.S. military's use of the Pacific coast Manta air base as an operational site for drug surveillance flights when the treaty runs out in 2009. "A symbol of sovereignty is to not have foreign soldiers on national soil," he said. The only way the U.S. military presence would continue in Ecuador was if Washington allowed "an Ecuadorean ...

Police failed her, and now Daley has too Published September 21, 2006 The Daley administration is stonewalling the case of Christina Eilman, the blond, white and bipolar California woman released from a police lockup at 51st and Wentworth after an episode at Midway Airport in May. Police left her to fend for herself. She couldn't. And now City Hall is fighting the release of interviews that would show how police allowed her to leave, to walk alone in a neighborhood where, residents told me Wednesday, she had no chance. In the past, Mayor Richard Daley has been eager to publicly hold his Police Department up to ridicule, when it served his political interests and when the cops were ...
Good Shepherds, Bad Shepherds, and their Sheeple Post Date: 2006-09-25 06:21:04 by YertleTurtle

Men do not follow causes --- they follow leaders. -- John Thomas Cripps I don't consider this my opinion; I consider it a fact. A lot of good practical wisdom about life is in the Bible, especially the Gospels. Forget the "religion" in it. That's not what I mean. What I mean is that you can find out a lot about human nature if you just think about what is written in the Bible. Put it this way: it wouldn't have lasted for thousands of years unless it was of immense practical value. Let's consider the well-known fact that Jesus called Himself the "Good Shepherd" and referred to His "flock" and His "sheep." That almost sounds disturbingly ...
