And the American people are going to sit home and say, Really, at a time when the wealthy are doing phenomenally well, do we really need to give them huge tax ...
Global Crisis: The Convergence of Marx, Orwell and Kafka Post Date: 2012-07-26 04:13:40 by Tatarewicz

The global crisis is not merely economic; it is the result of profound financial, sociological and political trends best captured by Marx, Orwell and Kafka. The global crisis is best understood as the convergence of the modern trends identified by Marx, Orwell and Kafka. Let's start with Franz Kafka, the writer (1883-1924) who most eloquently captured the systemic injustices of all powerful bureaucracies--the alienation experienced by the hapless citizen enmeshed in the bureaucratic web, petty officialdom's mindless persecutions of the innocent, and the intrinsic absurdity of the centralized State best expressed in this phrase: "We expect errors, not justice." If this ...

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told CNN's Piers Morgan last night that he doesn't "understand why police officers across this country dont stand up collectively and say were going to go on strike, were not going to protect you unless you, the public, through your legislature, do whats required to keep us safe." We've been hearing a lot of that recently. Earlier this year, The New York Times reprinted a Department of Justice press release and slapped this lede on top of it: As violent crime has decreased across the country, a disturbing trend has emerged: Rising numbers of police officers are being killed. Bloomberg and The New ...

The value of Tom Friedman His status among American elites is the single most potent fact for understanding the nation's imperial decline By Glenn Greenwald 20 more (updated below Update II) In The New York Times today, Tom Friedman argues that the only thing that could save Syria is if that country is lucky enough to have the U.S. do to it what the U.S. did to Iraq, and in the process, says this: And, for me, the lesson of Iraq is quite simple: You cant go from Saddam to Switzerland without getting stuck in Hobbes a war of all against all unless you have a well-armed external midwife, whom everyone on the ground both fears and trusts to manage the ...

I went to high school in Aurora, Colorado, about two miles from the scene of the Dark Night movie massacre. My late parents' home was a mile away from the scene of the crime. My immediate family and I have attended several movies at the now infamous Aurora Mall theaters. Therefore, this recent tragedy is somewhat personal for me. A part of me wants to ignore this tragedy and go on with my life because this is so very painful to look at this event. Several families and untold numbers of friends have lost a loved one in a seemingly senseless tragedy. Someone's husband and father is not coming home tonight and someone's child won't be there to open presents next Christmas. ...

That didnt stop Susan Ford, a senior executive at the company, from telling the House Ways and Means Committee this week that Americas high corporate tax rate was putting her company at a disadvantage: American manufacturers are at a ...

Scaring the hell out of Wall Street From an Unlikely Source, a Serious Challenge to Wall Street By Matt Taibbi July 21, 2012 "Rolling Stone" - - Something very interesting is happening. Theres been so much corruption on Wall Street in recent years, and the federal government has appeared to be so deeply complicit in many of the problems, that many people have experienced something very like despair over the question of what to do about it all. But theres something brewing that looks like it might be a blueprint to effectively take on the financial services industry: a plan to allow local governments to take on the problem of neighborhoods blighted by toxic home ...

Repentance: once a means of righting your wrongs before God, now a mechanism for the savages of our post-Christian society to publicly humiliate anyone who goes against the grain. If youre a rebel and the masses cant kill or silence you, their fallback is to try to convert you. Castrate you, lobotomize you, make you as mindless and suppliant as they are. OBrien smiled slightly. You are a flaw in the pattern, Winston. You are a stain that must be wiped out. Did I not tell you just now that we are different from the persecutors of the past? Regulators and Industry "Hook-Up" There are some real connections between Wall Street and prostitution. See this, this and this. Instead of using taxpayer-generated bailout money to help the economy, some banking executives used it for prostitutes and other gratifications. The "regulators" who are supposed to act as watchdogs play a very similar game. The Hill reported yesterday that investigators from the Treasurys Office of the Inspector General found that some of the regulators employees surfed erotic websites, hired prostitutes and accepted gifts from bank executives
instead of actually working to help the economy. Likewise, senior SEC ...
