We Are the 99.9%By PAUL KRUGMAN Published: November 24, 2011 Recommend Twitter Linkedin comments (42) Sign In to E-Mail Print Reprints Share Close DiggRedditTumblrPermalink. “We are the 99 percent” is a great slogan. It correctly defines the issue as being the middle class versus the elite (as opposed to the middle class versus the poor). And it also gets past the common but wrong establishment notion that rising inequality is mainly about the well educated doing better than the less educated; the big winners in this new Gilded Age have been a handful of very wealthy people, not college graduates in general. Romney Tells Iowa Audience: ‘I’m Not Trying To Put Money In People’s Pockets’ | Part of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s (R) plan to boost economic growth, he says, is a tax cut that comes in the form of repealing certain taxes on investments for the middle class. As ThinkProgress has noted, however, those cuts won’t actually benefit most middle-class individuals. Romney may now be aware of that fact, as he told one local resident in Des Moines, Iowa today that he isn’t “trying to put money in people’s pockets. That’s the other party.” Watch it: Despite what he says, Romney is indeed trying “to reduce the tax ...

November 23, 2011: The day before the Thanksgiving holiday brought three extraordinary news items. One was the report on the Republican presidential campaign debate. One was the Russian President’s statement about his country’s response to Washington’s missile bases surrounding his country. And one was the failure of a German government bond auction. As the presstitute media will not inform us of what any of this means, let me try. With the exception of Ron Paul, the only candidate in either party qualified to be the president of the US, the rest of the Republican candidates are even worse than Obama, a president who had the country behind him but sold out the American ...

Printing money will ZOT all our economic problems! ME of course! | k Moriens Posted on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 3:23:04 PM by kylemoriens Hi everyone! I just started blogging here and I thought I'd share my thoughts on the economy. But first about myself, Im 17 years old and live in Pawtucket Rode Island. I make a living as a profesional printer after I quit school and invented a revolutionary way to make money without working. I print it! YES! I can't believe no one ever thought of it before! I thought it up a year ago after I got fired from Wendys. I needed a quick way to make money so I printed it out on my computer using a scanner. I scan a 10 dollar or 20 dollar bill and ...

Retirement: Is 80 the new 65?

Slowing down may not be an option for many Americans. A new survey finds that many plan to keep working for years — whether they want to or not The traditional retirement age of 65 is a thing of the past, according to a new survey from Wells Fargo. Many Americans say they intend to work well into their retirement years, and a quarter say they won't have enough money saved to retire comfortably until they're 80, if ever. Three quarters of the 1,500 middle-class Americans surveyed said the amount you have squirreled away — not your age — should determine when you slow down. Meanwhile, just 20 percent said you should pick an age and quit then, no matter how much money ...

About 46 protesters spent Wednesday night in the United Methodist Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew. However, instead of respecting the sanctuary, police in plainclothes are entering churches to monitor their conduct. According to church officials, two police officers (one later ...

Living in a Delusional World

Living in a Delusional World by PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS I have come to the conclusion that Big Brother’s subjects in George Orwell’s 1984 are better informed than Americans. Americans have no idea why they have been at war in the Middle East, Asia and Africa for a decade. They don’t realize that their liberties have been supplanted by a Gestapo Police State. Few understand that hard economic times are here to stay. On October 27, 2011, the US government announced some routine economic statistics, and the president of the European Council announced a new approach to the Greek sovereign debt crisis. The result of these funny numbers and mere words sent the Standard & ...

Budget crunch? Or, who in the defense establishment is paid $1.5 million?

Budget crunch? Or, who in the defense establishment is paid $1.5 million? Posted By Thomas E. RicksFriday, November 18, 2011 - 10:35 AM Nope, not the chairman of the Joint Chiefs. But yes, the coach of the Navy football team gets that salary. The Air Force coach makes $889,000, USA Today reports. By comparison, the Army coach is practically on food stamps, getting just $610,000. (On the other hand, that still works out to more than $200,000 per Army win, so far this season.)

Did U.S. troops bring democracy? Iraqis have doubts

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Sitting in a barber shop in Baghdad's Shi'ite Sadr City slum, three friends agreed after a long and hard argument that U.S. forces brought democracy to Iraq. But they found it difficult to utter the words without raging about the flip side of what they saw as the U.S. occupation of their country. "OK, we have democracy. We can talk freely with no fear. We can demonstrate and vote freely. All these are available, and all were not before 2003," said student Hussain Ali, 20, as he waited for his haircut. "But why don't you ask us about the other side of the story of the U.S. presence in Iraq? Why don't you ask about their crimes, ...

EDITORIAL: A lucky break for occupiers Police actions allow protesters to plan next moves

Mayors in Portland, New York City and Oakland have done the Occupy Wall Street movement a big favor by clearing protesters’ encampments from public property. The tent cities’ effectiveness in building support for the occupiers’ anti-corporate message was on the wane. A winter of hypothermia and squalor lay ahead. By sending police to shut down the encampments this week, the mayors have forced the movement to do what needed to be done: Take stock and devise new strategies for calling public attention to such problems as widening economic inequality. People involved in Occupy Eugene should do the same. In Portland, Mayor Sam Adams set a deadline of 12:01 a.m. Sunday for the ...

Glenn Greenwald: Journalists have become servants to power

Salon.com’s Glenn Greenwald, a former constitutional rights attorney, said the media’s reaction to the “Occupy Wall Street” movement highlighted how mainstream media journalists had become part of the elite class. “If you look at, say, a host on MSNBC, what you’re actually seeing is a very high ranking employee of what was General Electric and now is Comcast, who makes many millions of dollars a year and has a make-up artist sitting in front of their face for an hour applying all sorts of make-up and another person working on their hair.” He said that journalists had traditionally been people outside of power who acted as watchdogs to aid the powerless, ...

A Retrosexual, no matter what the women insists, PAYS FOR THE DATE. A Retrosexual opens doors for a lady. Even for the ones that fit that term only because they are female. A Retrosexual DEALS with IT, be it a flat tire, break-in into your home, or a natural disaster, you DEAL WITH IT. A Retrosexual not only eats red meat, he often kills it himself. A Retrosexual doesn't worry about living to be 90. It's not how long you live, but how well. If you're 90 years old and still smoking cigars and drinking, I salute you. A Retrosexual does not use more hair or skin products than a woman. Women have several supermarket aisles of stuff. Retrosexuals need an endcap (possibly 2 ...
