Aussie straps in beer, not child

A car driver in Australia has been fined for strapping down his beer rather than his young child. Police said they were "shocked and appalled" when they pulled over the car south of Alice Springs in Australia's Northern Territory. They said the 30-can pack of beer was strapped down between two adults in the back, with the five-year-old child unrestrained on the floor. The driver was handed a fine of A$750 (US$709; £362). The fine was for failing to ensure a child was wearing a seatbelt as well as driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. 'Blank' look The car was pulled over on the Ross Highway last Friday. Constable Wayne Burnett said: "I ...

A New Supermarket

A new supermarket opened near my house. It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain. When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and you experience the scent of fresh mown hay. In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks with onions. When you a approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying. The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread &cookies. I don't buy toilet paper there any more.

Weekend Brain Teaser: Is a Flag Pin a Flag?
Post Date: 2008-05-10 15:00:59 by a vast rightwing conspirator

Politicians and TV heads sometimes tease each other for wearing or, more often, for NOT wearing flag pins. Obama was the target of such a tease in the recent ABC-sponsored debate. The way I see this most important issue is like this: if the flag pin is not a flag then, it doesn't matter if someone wears one or not because it's just an ornament, like Mad Albright's huge lapel spiders. They were not in indicator of her patriotism, they were just kitsch. If the flag pins are not flag, then they are (probably) Chinese-made kitsch. If the flag pins ARE flags, then, should their wearers be oh-so-careful handling them and disposing them? For example, they should never touch the ...

Clinton Has Become A Conservative Populist

The dying days of the Hillary Clinton campaign have brought the breathtaking spectacle of a candidate lashing out at every element of public life that has nourished her career. The über-wonk has disparaged economists and expertise. The staunch ally of black America has attacked her opponent for lacking support of "working, hard-working Americans, white Americans." People who thought they knew Hillary Clinton have gazed in astonishment: What has she become? The answer is, a conservative populist. Conservative populism and liberal populism are entirely different things. Liberal populism posits that the rich wield disproportionate influence over the government and push for ...

SpongeBob SquarePants image painted on historic Colo. cabin

MONUMENT, Colo. - The U.S. Forest Service is looking for the "SpongeBob fanatics" who painted the cartoon character on the chimney of a historic building. The 10-foot tall painting of Nickelodeon character SpongeBob SquarePants is on a cabin in the Pike National Forest that used to be the Forest Service's tree nursery until it was abandoned in the 1930s. Forest Service law enforcement officer Tom Healy says the incident is part of an increase in vandalism in the area. Officials say whoever painted the cartoon on the chimney brought four colors of paint and that it was a time-consuming venture. Healy says it will cost several thousand dollars to wipe the animated yellow ...
