GRANT COUNTY, Ind. - A man mowing grass in Grant County was found dead after his tractor fell into a farm pond. The man, who was not identified, was mowing a piece of land near the pond Wednesday night when his tractor got too close to the edge, conservation officers said. After the man didn't return home that night, family members searched the property but couldn't find him, so they called police. Conservation officers found tractor tracks over a steep bank down to the farm pond. A Department of Natural Resources diver found the man's body in the pond. Poster Comment:Golly, if only the federal government would mandate breathalyzer lock-outs for lawnmowers this tragedy could ...

The birth of the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler has been celebrated by Google with the publishing of an interactive Google doodle. Euler was arguably the most important mathematician of the 18th century and one of the greatest of all time. He introduced most modern mathematical terminology and notation and was also renowned for his work in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, and astronomy. Euler was born in Basel on 15 April 1707. He was tutored by Johann Bernoulli, a family friend who was also Europe's leading mathematician. When Euler's father tried to make him become a pastor, Bernoulli persuaded him that his son had the potential to be a great mathematician. He travelled ...

How to have the perfect day: Have sex for 106 minutes

Chances are, the ideal day doesn’t come close to the one you’re having. That’s because few of us are living by the optimal 36:106 ratio, (which is 36 minutes of work to 106 minutes of sex) cited in a recent paper by Sebastian Pokutta and Christian Kroll titled, “Just a perfect day? Developing a happiness optimised day schedule.” Kroll is a research fellow at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany, while Pokutta is an assistant professor of engineering at Georgia Tech. Most research into the area known as subjective well-being (SWB, for short) focuses on “people’s living conditions such as marriage, income or employment status.” Rather than magnifying ...

NAACP calls for Mount Rushmore to be demolished [Full Thread]

At a hastily organized news conference today, the national president of the NAACP asserted that images of two of the presidents honored on Mount Rushmore, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, are "offensive and hurtful." National NAACP president Rev. William Barber claimed that he was shocked Friday when he was shown a picture of the monument. Upon researching the memorial's history on Wikipedia, he discovered what he described as "disturbing truths" that require the site's "total demolition." Both former presidents were slaveowners. One historian who disagrees is Civil War historian Kevin M. Levin. "I sympathize with Reverend Barber, and ...

Archeologists called to the depths of the Citybanan tunnel project in Stockholm were stunned to find what they believe to be Mjölnir, the hammer of Norse lightning god Thor. The hammer was found in the granite bedrock of Södermalm island in Stockholm, where engineers are excavating a tunnel to redirect the suburban commuter trains in one of the capital's biggest infrastructure investments since the metro was built. "It was a case of shock and awe when one of my engineers recognized engravings on the object to be Norse runes," Citybanan project manager Johan Leber told The Local. "I at first thought it was piping sticking out of the ground," added ...

This is a story of self control and marksmanship with an itsy bitsy shooter by a woman against a fierce predator. What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself? The Beretta Jetfire: While out hiking in Alberta Canada with my boyfriend we were surprised by a huge grizzly bear charging at us from out of no where. She must have been protecting her cubs because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire with me I would not be here today! Just one shot to my boyfriend's knee cap was all it took…….the bear got him and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. It's one of the best pistols in my ...

Tansy Shrugged

Tansy Shrugged (an abortive short story) Thursday, March 21st, 2013 I’m always getting these ideas for the openings of stories. Then I either don’t know where to go with them or (more likely) don’t have enough ambition to figure it out. So here’s one I’m tossing at you. —– Tansy yawned and dropped the big book to the floor beside her chair. It landed with a window-rattling thump. Finally, she thought. I made it. She imagined this is what Medieval penitents had felt like after the last stop on a “go ’round the countryside whipping themselves from village to village” tour. Not pleasant, but done. She had finally managed to fulfill Aunt ...

A little old lady went into the Bank of Canada one day, carrying a bag of money. She insisted that she must speak with the president of the bank to open a savings account because, "It's a lot of money!" After much hemming and hawing, the bank staff finally ushered her into the president's office. The bank president then asked her how much she would like to deposit. She replied, "$165,000!" and dumped the cash out of her bag onto his desk. The president was of course curious as to how she came by all this cash, so he asked her, "Madam, I'm surprised you're carrying so much cash around. Where did you get this money?" The old lady replied, "I ...
