Florida Judge Jails Prospective Juror FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- A judge sentenced a 19-year-old to four months in jail for not mentioning his arrest record when he was called for jury duty, outraging his family. Circuit Judge Eileen O'Connor freed Stacey Forbes on bond Wednesday while he pursues an appeal. He had already served a month of the sentence she imposed for criminal contempt. "She wants blood from this kid, clearly," said Bill Gelin, Forbes' attorney. "It's unheard of nationwide, this type of sentence" for a juror. "Mean," said Coleen Forbes, Stacey's mother. "She is mean." Police arrested Forbes in October on charges related to car ...

GOP analysis gives Rossi 100-vote winBut Democrats say state law doesn't allow counting like that By GREGORY ROBERTS SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Without ballots cast by felons, dead voters and non-citizens, Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire would have lost the 2004 election to Republican Dino Rossi by about 100 votes, according to a statistical report cited by the GOP in its legal challenge to Gregoire's victory. But it's uncertain if the courts will buy the statistical arguments, which are a key to the GOP effort to overturn Gregoire's 129-vote win. Democrats say state law doesn't allow such arguments. The analysis was part of recent legal filings by the Republicans listing ...

Origins of the Money Power in America David Champeau A fantastic book describing the growth of the banking elite in America is The Coming Battle by M. W. Walbert. The book was first published in 1899 and chronicles the rise of the money power in America in the 19th century. The author uses documents from Congressional records, newspaper reports and writings by the founding fathers and others to chronicle the events long forgotten that shaped the young nation from 1776 to 1899, "though 123 years of history and hypocrisy by men in banking, government and business." The first chapter is titled "Origins of the Money Power in America" and I would like to give the reader a ...

FEMA CONCENTRATION CAMPS: Locations and Executive Orders

FEMA CONCENTRATION CAMPS: Locations and Executive Orders There over 800 prison camps in the United States, all fully operational and ready to receive prisoners. They are all staffed and even surrounded by full-time guards, but they are all empty. These camps are to be operated by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should Martial Law need to be implemented in the United States and all it would take is a presidential signature on a proclamation and the attorney general's signature on a warrant to which a list of names is attached. Ask yourself if you really want to be on Ashcroft's list. The Rex 84 Program was established on the reasoning that if a "mass exodus" of ...

SHOULD OFFICIALS OF THE FDIC BE PROSECUTED?

The "Federal" Deposit Insurance Corporation is another sweetheart deal like the privately owned "Federal" Reserve. The FDIC in an "independent" agency of the federal government created in 1933. Like the "independent" U.S. Postal Service which has their own corporate logo, the FDIC receives no Congressional appropriations. It funds itself from premiums that bank and thrift institutions pay for deposit insurance coverage and from earnings on investments in U.S. Treasury securities. Another incestuous affair so familiar in the District of Criminals, er, District of Columbia. What does this have to do with arresting and putting FDIC officials on trial? ...

The Republicans have just voted against a closed session hearing. UPDATE: I'll leave this diary up, but the better play by play is in the live open thread. They have essentially BROKEN A RULE to ram through the public hearing. AMERICA IS DEAD. These motherfuckers are KILLING OUR COUNTRY. The 10 Republicans have just thumbed their noses at the 8 Democrats, in essence saying, "Screw you, we have the votes, you don't, PROPRIETY and RULES have NOTHING to do with the way this government is going to be run while WE'RE in charge. I'm sorry. I said it in the Open thread, but this is APPALLING. I WEEP for the future. Frankly, this is earthshaking, and Dodd's shouting is possibly a signal ...

The Department of Homeland Security recently carried out an extensive anti-terrorist exercise entitled TOPOFF 3 (April 4-8, 2005). The "drill" was described by officials as "a multilayered approach to improving North American security". The stated objective of the TOPOFF 3 "Full Scale Exercise" was to "prepare America" in the case of an actual bioterrorism attack by Al Qaeda: ".. we deliberately built the scenario as a very complex WMD bioterrorism attack in New Jersey, as well as a kind of a dual-header in the state of Connecticut in terms of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, and then a simultaneous chemical attack. The system in TOPOFF 3 ...

The religious Right seeks to insert God in our Constitution as an “eternal value” to forever guide America and to restrict Americans. A recent article in The Kansas City Star stirred some serious doubts in my mind about the rationality of those leading the Christian Right movement. Nina Easton indicated in the article that key leaders of the conservative Christian movement met in Washington on 4/7/05 to formulate their strategy to take control of the federal judiciary. In their conference, “Confronting the Judicial War on Faith”, the Religious Right castigated George Bush, brother Jeb, and Bill Frist for failing to take a strong enough stand against the courts in the ...

Freedom Above Fortune News Dear Friends: Undoubtedly timed to coincide with April 15th, Walter “Al” Thompson’s sentencing occurred on Wednesday, April 13th. Judge William Shubb sentenced Al to 60 months of confinement for charges relating to withholding and an additional 12 months for the charges relating to amended income tax returns, for a total of 72 months incarceration. It is regrettable that due to Al’s incarceration before and during the trial, and the hurdles he encountered as he represented himself during the trial, he had tremendous difficulty in providing the documents and testimony that would have proven to the jury that he had conducted himself in good ...

Take a moment to picture this...Picture that you are born into a family... but not your usual family. This family has many many families combined. Each one helping the other to take care of each other, to cook meals , to clean up, to build things, to survive. In this family, everyone is expected to help with daily living. You all have a job, a responsibility. Each is treated fairly, and equally, and there is much love. Every day you walk with the others to the center of the home... there's a small chapel there built for daily worship of the Lord, and for Bible studies. Everyone within your family was taught early on to have respect for elders and people every where. You were shown by your ...

Collapse of some groups may leave disaffected followers, experts say NEW YORK - Although it’s been 10 years since the Oklahoma City bombing, and no similar attacks have occurred on U.S. soil, experts who follow the extreme radical right say they still pose a serious threat of domestic terrorism. "We are still experiencing a large degree of right-wing activity, including acts of terrorism," said Mark Pitcavage, who tracks the radical right for the Anti-Defamation League. "Overall, anti-government and hate groups remain very active." But certain groups — such as the militia movement which gained widespread publicity in the mid-1990s — have declined, while ...

(04-18) 07:29 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) -- The Supreme Court agreed Monday to consider whether a church in New Mexico can continue using hallucinogenic tea in its religious services. At issue is whether use of the tea, which contains a drug banned under the federal Controlled Substances Act, is protected under freedom of religion laws. The Bush administration contends the tea is illegal and use of it potentially dangerous for church members. Justices will review a lower court ruling that allowed the Brazil-based church — O Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal — to import and use the hoasca tea while the case was appealed. The church, which has about 140 members in the ...

(04-18) 08:04 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) -- The Supreme Court on Monday said it will consider whether police may search a home when one occupant consents but another does not. Justices will review the case of Scott Fitz Randolph of Georgia, who was charged with cocaine possession in 2001 following a domestic disturbance call by his wife. When police arrived, she complained that Randolph had taken away their son and that he had been using cocaine. A few minutes later, Randolph returned home and told police the son was at a neighbor's home. Officers then asked to search the couple's home, but Randolph objected. Mrs. Randolph, however, consented and led police to a drug stash inside the ...

Federal marshals and warrants officers stormed into James V. Lemmon's house about 6:30 a.m. Friday, waking his wife and daughters. To the family's horror and confusion, police handcuffed Lemmon and led him to a police car. While he was being driven to the Allen County Lockup, Lemmon protested that he had committed no crimes, but police were less than sympathetic. Offenders are always telling police that they're innocent. But this time was different. Police had arrested the wrong James Lemmon on three counts of child molesting, charges that are punishable by 20 to 50 years in prison. It wasn't a police error, however. The Allen County Prosecutor's Office mistakenly filed the charges ...

Paull Shin on January 13, 2005, to authorize the Department of Ecology to permit by rule, under conditions appropriate to the water resources inventory area, the use of rain barrels and cisterns to collect rainwater intended for beneficial use on the same property from where it was collected. The bill remedies a regulatory problem stemming from a 1917 law that requires the state to issue use permits for all waters, including rain water. In recent times some counties have been denying building permits for residences that included cisterns due to lack of clarity about the 1917 law. This bill would remove the mandatory permitting process and allow the Department of ...

Latest Assault on Judges Threatens Rule of Law By Cass R. Sunstein Cass R. Sunstein teaches law at the University of Chicago. April 15, 2005 In the last half-century, conservative politicians have mounted three dramatically different attacks on the federal judiciary. The first attack, in which they emphasized the need for judicial restraint, was principled and coherent. The second, which called on judges to consider the original meaning of the Constitution, was more radical but still had honorable goals: to promote stability, neutrality and the rule of law. The third attack, however, is the most worrisome: a large-scale challenge to judicial independence, and we are now in the midst of ...

On April 19, 1775, British and American soldiers exchanged fire in the Massachusetts towns of Lexington and Concord. On the night of April 18, the royal governor of Massachusetts, General Thomas Gage, commanded by King George III to suppress the rebellious Americans, had ordered 700 British soldiers, under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith and Marine Major John Pitcairn, to seize the colonists' military stores in Concord, some 20 miles west of Boston. A system of signals and word-of-mouth communication set up by the colonists was effective in forewarning American volunteer militia men of the approach of the British troops. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "Paul Revere's Ride" ...

WASHINGTON — The taxman is outsourcing. The Internal Revenue Service (search) has gotten the go-ahead to begin contracting out to private debt collection agencies (search) to go after uncollected federal tax payments, believed by the IRS to be around $270 billion a year. "The use of these collection agencies will allow the IRS to focus its resources on more complex cases and will allow the IRS to handle more cases at an earlier stage before they become harder to collect," said IRS spokeswoman Nancy Mathis. Though several federal agencies use private collectors to retrieve debts, the IRS was only given the authority when President Bush signed the American Jobs Creation Act ...
