Extending Key Patriot Act Provisions - by Stephen Lendman On October 13, 2001 New York Times writers Robin Toner and Neil Lewis headlined, "A NATION CHALLENGED: CONGRESS; House Passes Terrorism Bill Much Like Senate's, but With 5-Year Limit," saying: The House gave "the government broad new powers for the wiretapping, surveillance and investigation of terrorism suspects. But in recognition of many lawmakers' fears of the potential for government overreaching and abuse, the House also included a five-year limit after which many of those powers would expire." On October 26, George Bush signed it into law, prompting Center for Constitutional Rights senior ...

Don't know if this was posted last year.... just came across it. The Lower Merion School District spied on a student in his home, using the webcam in his school-supplied laptop, a federal lawsuit alleges. The parents of Blake Robbins, a Harriton High student from Penn Valley, claimed the school never warned parents that the webcam in the Macintosh computer could be turned on remotely by school administrators. The laptops were issued to all Harriton students. Two Harriton students reached today said they were shocked to learn of the allegations. Both said they leave the laptop on in their room most of the time. They said it would have been running when they were changing clothes or ...

Killings, Detentions and Torture in Egypt - by Stephen Lendman On February 9, London Guardian writer Chris McGreal headlined, "Egypt's army 'involved in detentions and torture,' " saying: Military forces "secretly detained hundreds and possibly thousands of suspected government opponents since mass (anti-Mubarak) protests began, (and) at least some of these detainees have been tortured, according to testimony gathered by the Guardian." Moreover, Human Rights Watch (HRW) and other human rights organizations cited years of army involvement in disappearances and torture. Former detainees confirmed "extensive beatings and other abuses at the hands of the ...

Obama's Middle East Hypocrisy - by Stephen Lendman Since taking office in January 2009, Obama broke every major campaign promise, including relevant ones to his May 19 Middle East speech; namely: -- "hope;" -- "change;" -- peace; -- democratic values; -- closing Guantanamo in one year; -- ending torture, illegal spying, and detention without trial; -- "a new era of openness;" -- willingness to meet individually with Iranian, Syrian, Venezuelan, Cuban, and North Korean leaders; -- supporting Israeli and Palestinian efforts to "fulfill their national goals: two states living side by side in peace and security;" and -- on Afghanistan ...

Zero Tolerance Alert: High School Lacrosse players Charged with Possession of Deadly Weapons (Penknife, Lighter Used to Repair Equipment) 5/18/2011 EASTON, Md. — The Rutherford Institute is calling on Maryland school officials to exhibit some common sense and compassion in their handling of an incident involving two Easton High School lacrosse players who were suspended for being in possession of a penknife and lighter used for maintaining lacrosse equipment. It is undisputed that the sole reason the items were in the boys' lacrosse bags was for their use as tools for maintaining lacrosse equipment. Nevertheless, the police were called in and one player was actually handcuffed, ...

America's Student Loan Racket: Soaring Default Rates - by Stephen Lendman An earlier article discussed Permanent Debt Bondage from America's Student Loan Racket," accessed through the following link: http://sjlendman.blogspot.com/2011/01/permanent-debt-bondage-from-americas.html It explained government/corporate complicity to rip off students for profit, a racket continuing under Obama. His July 2010 Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act perpetuated the scam. It enriches providers, entrapping millions of students permanently in debt, because rising tuition and fee amounts plus interest, service charges, and late payment or collection agency penalties are too onerous to ...

How Totalitarian Police States Are Built
Post Date: 2011-05-18 06:37:32 by Ada

Totalitarian state powers grow by great leaps and bounds in the midst of obvious threats to the safety of the people, such as major wars and great financial crises. This has happened repeatedly in the U.S. from Lincoln's Civil War to Bush and Obama's Global "War On Terrorism" and their "Saving" the American people and the world from the Great Financial Crisis the government created through the wild pump-priming of the Federal Reserve and Big Banks. When the crisis is over some of those powers are reduced, but not eliminated, so the totalitarian powers ratchet up one big step at each major crisis and over a century and a half the U.S. government would by those big ...

America's Appalling Human Rights Record - by Stephen Lendman Coincidental with high-level US - China May 9 and 10 talks, the Atlantic magazine quoted Hillary Clinton calling China's human rights record "deplorable." She also suggested possible unrest erupting like in the Middle East, then added: "They're worried, and they are trying to stop history, which is a fool's errand. They cannot do it. But they're going to hold it off as long as possible," ignoring America's scandalous human rights record, by far the world's worse. Each year, the State Department publishes human rights reports for over 190 countries. Its April 8- released 2010 China ...

With so much criminal acts committed by the last 5 presidents and their cohorts, getting us back to the Constitution will be a most formidable task. Where should he start and what should he do first? He has talked about ending all the unconstitutional wars, bringing the troops home, ending the Federal Reserve, the IRS, the War on Drugs and freeing all those who have been incarcerated in the phony drug war, closing down the secret prisons and the torture of those who are denied due process of law under our Constitution. Please feel free to add to this list of things that need to be done very quickly right from the get go. What I have mentioned so far, "ALL" of which, have various ...

CROWN POINT, Ind. – According to Newton County Sheriff, Don Hartman Sr., random house to house searches are now possible and could be helpful following the Barnes v. STATE of INDIANA Supreme Court ruling issued on May 12th, 2011. When asked three separate times due to the astounding callousness as it relates to trampling the inherent natural rights of Americans, he emphatically indicated that he would use random house to house checks, adding he felt people will welcome random searches if it means capturing a criminal. Speaking under the condition of anonymity, a local city Police Chief with 30 years experience in law enforcement directly contradicted the Newton County Sheriff’s ...

Supreme Court gives police a new entryway into homes

The Supreme Court on Monday gave police more leeway to break into residences in search of illegal drugs. The justices in an 8-1 decision said officers who loudly knock on a door and then hear sounds suggesting evidence is being destroyed may break down the door and enter without a search warrant. Residents who "attempt to destroy evidence have only themselves to blame" when police burst in, said Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. In a lone dissent, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she feared the ruling in a Kentucky case will give police an easy way to ignore the 4th Amendment. "Police officers may not knock, listen and then break the door down," she said, without violating ...

Santiago, Chile Constitution toilet paper Indiana Supreme Court dispenses with Magna Carta, ConstitutionOn June 10, 1215 AD, after prolonged rebellion and frustrating negotiation, a group of England’s most influential barons entered London to force the disastrous King John Softsword into accepting a revolutionary charter of individual freedoms. Five days later in the Runnymede meadow of Surrey County, John affixed his royal seal onto what became known as the Magna Carta. It still exists on the books today in England and Wales. This document was one of the more important antecedents to the US Constitution; its proclamations ended the absolutism of England’s monarchy and spelled ...

10 Indications The United States Is A Dictatorship “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” — Lord Acton Activist Post May 16th, 2011 For a people to be free, they must first be honest with themselves, their government, and the world at large. History is filled with stories of free nations that fell under the spell cast by their governments who exploited the threat of terror. In fact, numerous presidents in American history already have used various specific threats to sidestep their Constitutional restraints. Today we are entering a nebulous world where our “enemy” cannot be defined, has no particular allegiance to one country, and is able to ...

Bill would ban parents from having sex at home while getting divorce: MyFoxBOSTON.com BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A new bill on Beacon Hill would ban parents from engaging in sexual relationships within the home until their divorces are final. Supporters say the bill is meant to prevent domestic violence and shield children while the divorce is underway. Critics say it takes away parents rights. In addition to the divorce bill, local lawmakers will also consider a bill this week to reform the state's alimony laws . The bill would end lifetime alimony payments in most cases and cap how much one spouse is ordered to pay the other. The state's current law does not contain ...

A Texas county attorney has described the federal government in a way that is both insightful and destined for greatness. He said, "That bunch has a real corner on stupid." Tom Edwards was talking about the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives, regarding a fire ATF agents accidentally set in Motley County, Texas, practicing detonations in an area locally designated no-burn. The county attorney is now helping Texans whose property was destroyed to apply for damages from the federal government. The federal government has always had a real corner on stupid. In the early 1800s, and up through the 1860s, discussion about states going their own way and ...

Indiana: Full Frontal Fascism

Indiana: Full Frontal Fascism Something huge--huge and not good--just happened in Indiana, which will be little more than a blip in the propaganda that passes for national news. The Supreme Court of Indiana just ruled that in Indiana, if a police officer decides to illegally come into your house, you're not allowed to do anything to stop him. According to "Justice" Steven David, resisting an admittedly "unlawful police entry into a home" is against "public policy." Got that? If you live in Indiana, and a cop decides to invade your home without a shred of legal justification, it is considered a crime for you to do anything to stop him. Bizarrely, ...

ObamaCare Appellate Judges Playing Semantic Games

A dictionary is all that's necessary for judges to see that "ObamaCare" is unconstitutional; however, dictionaries seem to be in short supply in some courtrooms. For example, to date four federal appeals courts have scheduled oral arguments challenging the constitutionality of ObamaCare -- the Third Circuit Court, the Fourth, the Sixth, and the Eleventh. The first of those hearings took place on May 10 in Richmond, VA. The Obama Administration sent its top appellate lawyer, acting Solicitor General Neal K. Katyal. He was opposed in the first by Matthew D. Staver, the law school dean at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and in the second by Virginia's state Solicitor ...

INDIANAPOLIS | Overturning a common law dating back to the English Magna Carta of 1215, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Hoosiers have no right to resist unlawful police entry into their homes. In a 3-2 decision, Justice Steven David writing for the court said if a police officer wants to enter a home for any reason or no reason at all, a homeowner cannot do anything to block the officer's entry. "We believe ... a right to resist an unlawful police entry into a home is against public policy and is incompatible with modern Fourth Amendment jurisprudence," David said. "We also find that allowing resistance unnecessarily escalates the level of violence and ...

He Served the Empire Abroad; The Regime Killed Him in His Home Posted by William Grigg on May 11, 2011 01:16 PM Jose Guerena survived two combat tours of Iraq, only to become a casualty of the Regime’s longest war — the one waged against its domestic subjects in the name of drug prohibition. The former Marine was slaughtered by a SWAT team during a May 5 assault on his home in Arizona. Guerena’s wife, Vanessa, heard a noise outside the couple’s home near Tucson at about 9 a.m. Jose, who had just gone to bed after pulling a 12-hour shift at the Asarco Mine, suspected — correctly, as it turned out — that his family was threatened by an armed criminal gang. ...
