Gore Vidal: ‘We’ll have a dictatorship soon in the US’ Post Date: 2009-09-30 14:53:17 by Horse

The grand old man of letters Gore Vidal claims America is rotting away and dont expect Barack Obama to save it A conversation with Gore Vidal unfolds at his pace. He answers questions imperiously, occasionally playfully, with a piercing, lethal dryness. He is 83 and in a wheelchair (a result of hypothermia suffered in the war, his left knee is made of titanium). But he can walk (Of course I can) and after a recent performance of Mother Courage at Londons National Theatre he stood to deliver an anti-war speech to the audience. How was his friend Fiona Shaw in the title role? Very good. Where did they meet? Silence. The US? Well, ...

High court to look at local gun control laws By MARK SHERMAN (AP) 43 minutes ago WASHINGTON The Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to decide whether strict local and state gun control laws violate the Second Amendment, ensuring another high-profile battle over the rights of gun owners. The court said it will review a lower court ruling that upheld a handgun ban in Chicago. Gun rights supporters challenged gun laws in Chicago and some suburbs immediately following the high court's decision in June 2008 that struck down a handgun ban in the District of Columbia, a federal enclave. The new case tests whether last year's ruling applies as well to local and state laws. The ...

White House Threatens to Prosecute Private Medicare Companies for Warning Seniors of Cuts Post Date: 2009-09-30 10:21:18 by freepatriot32

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 25, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Obama administration has aroused a fierce First Amendment controversy after threatening companies selling private Medicare coverage not to tell their customers that current health care legislation would result in benefit cuts - or else face a lawsuit. The administration and Senate Democrats justify the move by saying the claim, spread by at least one such company, is patently false. Yet some say the administration is the one twisting the facts to help the unpopular legislation: critics note that even the head of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office agrees that the legislation would mean a loss of senior benefits. The ...

"To compare the president to Hitler is not free speech. It is inciting violence." This is a very common talking point these days on the left. Google the terms and you will see the theme repeatedly. It is considered a hate crime to compare Obama to the Nazi leader, or even to describe more generally his agenda as fascist. Although I recall every president Ive lived under being characterized in this manner, suddenly it is a danger to American democracy for the comparison to be uttered. When Bush was compared to Hitler, of course the establishment right was hysterical, too, but the left seems even more willing than the neocons to propose outright prohibiting such political ...

More Obama Administration Witch-Hunt Targets - by Stephen Lendman The FBI's top six news stories for the week ending September 25 were about arrests and/or indictments of suspected Muslim terrorists. Combined, they became the latest national security targets in America's war on Islam. Waged relentlessly since 9/11, it continues unabated under Obama for the same political advantage George Bush sought by stoking fear to be used as a pretext to wage imperial wars and crack down ruthlessly at home with police state efficiency - today against Muslims, Latino immigrants, environmental and animal rights activists, and street protestors, tomorrow against anyone voicing dissent. ...

FDIC Proposes Banks Prepay Deposit Fees Through 2012 Post Date: 2009-09-29 16:11:44 by DeaconBenjamin

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. proposed asking banks to prepay three years of premiums to replenish reserves dented by a rash of bank failures that the agency said will cost $100 billion through 2013. The insurance fund will run a deficit as of tomorrow after 120 banks failed in the past two years, the agency said today. Half the costs from seized banks have been incurred already and prepaying the fees will raise $45 billion, the FDIC said. The agency rejected options for a second special fee or borrowing from the Treasury Department. What we are proposing to do is to tap the ample liquidity of the banking industry to improve our own liquidity position ...

(09-29) 10:28 PDT PHOENIX (AP) -- A new Arizona law allowing people with concealed weapons permits to carry their guns into bars takes effect Wednesday. But many bars are pulling in the welcome mat. The law allows bar and restaurant owners to post signs barring guns. There's no official tally on how many of the 5,800 establishments that sell alcohol have posted signs, but the state says it has provided at least 1,300 laminated placards so far, and the signs are also available over the Internet. The law was backed by the National Rifle Association, which argued that licensed gun owners shouldn't be forced to leave their protection behind. The law, however, prohibits gun-carriers ...

Senators Look To Remove Telco Retroactive Immunity For Warrantless Wiretaps Post Date: 2009-09-28 22:54:48 by Brian S

A handful of Democratic senators are promoting legislation to repeal immunity for telecommunications firms that cooperated with the Bush administration on a warantless wiretapping program. Congress voted last year to provide "retroactive immunity" to any companies participating in the controversial program. But with a more sizable majority, some Democrats are pushing to repeal that. Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) will introduce the Retroactive Immunity Repeal Act, opening up some of the country's largest firms to legal liabilities. Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) have signed on as co-sponsors. I believe we best defend America ...

(09-28) 11:42 PDT Seattle (AP) -- A Tacoma gun shop linked to the D.C. sniper case isn't getting its firearms license back. U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez ruled Friday the government properly revoked the license of Bull's Eye Shooter Supply, where John Allen Muhammad and teen accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo obtained weapons. Malvo and Muhammad lived in the Tacoma area before beginning a string of random sniper shootings that left 10 dead in October 2002. A Bushmaster rifle used in the attacks was among hundreds of weapons that went missing from the Bull's Eye, which was repeatedly warned about sloppy record keeping. In another instance, the pair had a Tacoma man buy for ...

Military and Riot Thugs Detain, Dehumanize and TORTURE American Citizens Posted By admin On September 27, 2009 @ 10:37 am In Featured Stories | 102 Comments Jason Bermas Prison Planet.com Sunday, September 27, 2009 In what was possibly the most surreal, horrific, and unimaginable thing I have ever witnessed in my life, 1200 Riot Police and Military Personal rabidly attacked a group of well under 300 American citizens, many of them just students that were unaware there was even a protest going on. They then expanded their perimeter and shut large areas of Oakland down. This is how my last experience at the G20 in Pittsburgh went down, out of control authorities mercilessly attacking an ...

Dear CCR Supporter: At this very moment, the fundamental right to dissent is being restricted, threatened, and perilously criminalized. CCR is on the front lines defending the right to dissent and has also reissued an important resource for all those likely to be targeted by thier actions. Right now, thousands of activists who have gathered in Pittsburgh to protest at the G20 summit have been met with what we have come to expect: overreaction by authorities and illegal preventive tactics by law enforcement officers at all levels. A secret communications hub with "electronic eyes" has been established by the Secret Service working with over 40 other agencies to inflitrate, spy ...

"There are few references in life so common as that to the lessons of history. Those who know it are doomed to repeat it." -- John Kenneth Galbraith in A Short History of Financial Euphoria Once bitten, twice shy? Not if it's the government of the United States. In a bizarre piece of logic, the Barack Obama-led administration has been giving out subprime loans through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), a government agency. Prime home loans are the best part of the market, where only borrowers with good credit ratings get a home loan. Subprime home loans are the worst, typically involving borrowers with very bad credit history and who won't get a loan in the ...
