Samantha Power and the weaponization of human rights Post Date: 2009-07-23 07:04:33 by Ada

American liberals rejoiced at Samantha Powers appointment to the National Security Council. After so many dreary Clintonites were stacked into top State Department positionsDennis Ross, Richard Holbrooke, Hillary herselfhere was new blood: a dynamic idealist, an inspiring public intellectual, a bestselling author of a book against genocide, a professor at Harvards Carr Center for Human Rights. And she hasnt even turned 40. The blogosphere buzzed. Surely Samantha Power was the paladin, the conscience, the senior director for multilateral affairs to bring human rights back into U.S. foreign policy. Dont count on it. Human rights, a term once ...

Sotomayor: Wise Latin Liar? Post Date: 2009-07-22 14:11:19 by X-15

The court of appeals is where policy is made, said Sonia Maria Sotomayor, in February, 2005, in a panel discussion at Duke University. The task of a judge is not to make the law, it is to apply the law, said Sonia Maria Sotomayor, July 13, 2009, at the opening of the senate hearings for her confirmation as a Supreme Court Justice. These two statements alone should convince any objective person that Sotomayor is fundamentally untrustworthy. She is a politician, not a judge. For her, the bench is an opportunity for social engineering. For her, the purpose of a judge is to affect or change social values. For her, saying what seems appropriate at the moment ...

This bill will become public knowledge 30 days after it is voted into law. This is an amendment to the Internal Revenue Act of 1986. NEW GUN THREAT TO NEW YORK Post Date: 2009-07-22 08:54:03 by Jethro Tull

WASHINGTON -- The Senate is expected to vote today on a controversial measure that would force New York to honor concealed-weapon permits from other states -- touching off outrage from Mayor Bloomberg and other leaders. Critics are warning the vote could be close. The amendment, introduced by South Dakota Republican John Thune, would force police departments in states and localities with restrictive gun laws, like New York, to recognize gun permits obtained in states with less restrictive laws, such as Vermont. "There will be needless suffering, injuries and deaths if this amendment is passed," warned Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Under the rules agreed to for the amendment, it ...

Report: Iqbal case cited by lower courts 500 times in just two months In just two short months, a little-noticed case involving a former detainees lawsuit against two Bush administration officials may have become what one attorney called the most significant Supreme Court decision in a decade affecting U.S. civil litigation. Decided in May, Ashcroft v. Iqbal has already been cited over 500 times by lower courts, The New York Times reported on Tuesday. The lawsuit, which named former Attorney General John Ashcroft and former FBI Director Robert Mueller, stemmed from the alleged torture and humiliation of a Pakistani man, arrested in New York City in November, 2001. In a ...
Democrats irked by Obama signing statement [Ignore Laws He Doesn't Like] Post Date: 2009-07-21 18:18:12 by DeaconBenjamin

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama has irked close allies in Congress by declaring he has the right to ignore legislation on constitutional grounds after having criticized George W. Bush for doing the same. Four senior House Democrats on Tuesday said they were "surprised" and "chagrined" by Obama's declaration in June that he doesn't have to comply with provisions in a war spending bill that puts conditions on aid provided to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. In a signing statement accompanying the $106 billion bill, Obama said he wouldn't allow the legislation to interfere with his authority as president to conduct foreign policy and ...

Court knew man jailed for a year for non-support was not child's father Post Date: 2009-07-21 07:30:41 by PSUSA

Frank Hatley has languished in a South Georgia jail for more than a year. The reason? He failed to reimburse the state for all the public assistance his son received over the past two decades. The problem? Hatley is not the biological father -- and a special assistant state attorney general and a judge knew it but jailed Hatley anyway. I feel bad for the man, Cook County Sheriff Johnny Daughtrey said Tuesday. Put yourself in that mans shoes: If it wasnt your child, would you want to be paying child support for him? Daughtrey said he hopes a hearing Wednesday will resolve the matter. Hatley has been held at the county jail in Adel since ...

Obama: August healthcare deadline may "spill over" Jul 20, 2009 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Monday the August deadline he had set for Congress to pass initial healthcare legislation may "spill over," but repeated that he wanted reforms enacted soon. "I want this done now," Obama said in an interview on the PBS program "The Newshour with Jim Lehrer." "Now, if there are no deadlines, nothing gets done in this town. ... If somebody comes to me and says, it's basically done; it's going to spill over by a few days or a week -- you know, that's different," he said. Obama had repeatedly urged the House of ...

The letter, which the FederalTimes.com blog provided a scanned copy late last week, says: "[USPS] top executives are now saying that the USPS will default on a $5.4 billion payment to prefund future retiree health benefits on September 30, 2009. Many of the banks that got federal aid to support increased lending have instead used some of the money to make investments, repay debts or buy other banks, according to a new report from the special inspector general overseeing the government's financial rescue program. The report, which will be published Monday, surveyed 360 banks that got money through the end of January and found that 110 had invested at least some of it, that 52 had repaid debts and that 15 had used funds to buy other banks. Roughly 80 percent of respondents, or 300 banks, also said at least some of the money had supported new lending. The report by special inspector general Neil Barofsky calls on the Treasury ...
White House putting off release of budget update Post Date: 2009-07-20 08:23:24 by Disgusted

White House putting off release of budget update WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is being forced to acknowledge the wide gap between its once-upbeat predictions about the economy and today's bleak landscape. The administration's annual midsummer budget update is sure to show higher deficits and unemployment and slower growth than projected in President Barack Obama's budget in February and update in May, and that could complicate his efforts to get his signature health care and global-warming proposals through Congress. The release of the update - usually scheduled for mid-July - has been put off until the middle of next month, giving rise to speculation the White House is ...

Dismantling the Temple [Abolish the Fed] Post Date: 2009-07-19 09:12:58 by DeaconBenjamin

The financial crisis has propelled the Federal Reserve into an excruciating political dilemma. The Fed is at the zenith of its influence, using its extraordinary powers to rescue the economy. Yet the extreme irregularity of its behavior is producing a legitimacy crisis for the central bank. The remote technocrats at the Fed who decide money and credit policy for the nation are deliberately opaque and little understood by most Americans. For the first time in generations, they are now threatened with popular rebellion. During the past year, the Fed has flooded the streets with money--distributing trillions of dollars to banks, financial markets and commercial interests--in an attempt to ...
The Sinister Purpose Behind Bush Administration Lawlessness Post Date: 2009-07-19 08:57:47 by Ada

The seeming irrationality behind the George W. Bush administrations "against the grain" (and the law) policies on torture, warrantless domestic surveillance, and now notification of Congress about CIA covert operations was not irrational at all. Most experts say that torture is counterproductive because the subject will tell the interrogator what he or she wants to hear to stop the pain and because many military people say that it merely revs up the opposition, gives them no incentive to surrender, and gives them every incentive to torture U.S. military personnel. Yet in the face of this mountain of authoritative opinion and the policys clear violation of ...
FEMA And REX 84 Post Date: 2009-07-18 19:42:42 by Horse

In April 1984, President Reagan signed Presidential Directorate Number 54 that allowed FEMA to engage in a secret national "readiness exercise" under the code name of REX 84. The exercise was to test FEMA's readiness to assume military authority in the event of a "State of Domestic National Emergency" concurrent with the launching of a direct United States military operation in Central America. The plan called for the deputation of U.S. military and National Guard units so that they could legally be used for domestic law enforcement. These units would be assigned to conduct sweeps and take into custody an estimated 400,000 undocumented Central American immigrants in ...

Good News, Bad News, Unbelievable News by James W. Harris National ID: The Battle Begins... Again Last year REAL ID -- the Bush administration's plan to turn state driver's licenses into a national ID card -- was stopped by a heroic grassroots effort. Ultimately, an amazing 23 states enacted anti-REAL ID bills or resolutions, driving a stake into the heart of that monstrous proposal. But a national ID is just too terrible an idea not to appeal to power-hungry government officials, whatever their party. And so the fight is on again. REAL ID is back, under the name PASS ID and with the support of President Obama and the Department of Homeland Security. And like its predecessor, ...

DICK ACT of 1902... CAN'T BE REPEALED (GUN CONTROL FORBIDDEN) - Protection Against Tyrannical Government Submitted by Jonathan on Sun, 03/29/2009 - 2:04pm. The Dick Act of 1902 also known as the Efficiency of Militia Bill H.R. 11654, of June 28, 1902 invalidates all so-called gun-control laws. It also divides the militia into three distinct and separate entities. ** SPREAD THIS TO EVERYONE ** The three classes H.R. 11654 provides for are the organized militia, henceforth known as the National Guard of the State, Territory and District of Columbia, the unorganized militia and the regular army. The militia encompasses every able-bodied male between the ages of 18 and 45. All members of ...
Senate Passes Hate Bill! Yet Democrats Compromise Post Date: 2009-07-17 10:15:38 by christine

Sen. Patrick Leahys hate crimes bill, amending the National Defense Authorization Act, effectively passed the Senate tonight at about eleven oclock p.m. EDT. A call for cloture, or termination of debate after thirty hours, was passed 63 to 28. Clearly, the Senate majority had spoken. Once cloture is invoked there is usually little more that can be done to resist. There was no floor debate. A complete end run had been done around adequate Senate hearings, a Mark-up session and Rules Committee debate. Total Senate debate of the hate bill amounted to little more than a brief kangaroo hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee several weeks ago. Witnesses, which included ...

Were 3,000 Afghans Murdered As U.S. Troops Stood By? NEW YORK--"I've asked my national security team to...collect the facts," President Obama told CNN. Then, he said, "we'll probably make a decision in terms of how to approach it once we have all the facts together." Probably. Such was Obama's tepid reaction to a New York Times cover story about an alleged "mass killing of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Taliban prisoners of war by the forces of an American-backed warlord during the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan." Obama sounds so reasonable. Doesn't he always? But his reaction to the massacre in the Dasht-i-Leili desert is nothing more than ...

Double Jeopardy OKd for John Demjanjuk Written by John F. McManus Wednesday, 15 July 2009 12:25 The U.S. Justice Department may indeed get their man this time even if justice is tossed out the window. Retired auto worker John Demjanjuk has been deported to Germany where he will be charged this time with complicity in Nazi crimes at Polands Sobibor concentration camp. Why emphasize this time? Well, the now 89-year-old Ohioan was put through several legal wringers beginning 30 years ago because he was supposed to be Ivan the Terrible, the sadistic prison guard from Treblinka, a completely different camp. Turns out he wasnt Ivan after ...

How would censorship work in the Internet age? Australia gives us a sneak preview of the gong show that ensues when medieval thinking is applied to a wired world. Australias government nannies have officially banned 1,370 web sites. Theyve drawn up a blacklist, just like the medieval index of banned books. Right now its a voluntary pilot project to which Internet service providers can submit. But if the trial run is deemed a success and made law, anyone who links to a blacklisted site can be fined $11,000 a day. That means it will be a crime not just to provide the contents of a web site, but to merely reproduce its address. Thats not just like banning books. ...
