The huge boom in popularity of the King of Pop's music has boosted pension fund ABP, which owns the rights to a number of of Michael Jackson songs. ABP bought two music catalogues last year, including the rights to some Michael Jackson songs like You Are Not Alone, according to the website of Imagem Music Group, which manages the music assets for ABP. "There are always certain songs that for whatever reason, in this case tragic, suddenly become very popular. The last fact is a basis for the investment," said an ABP spokesman. ABP total portfolio of music rights is understood to have to returned about 8pc annually, although there are no figures for Michael Jackson alone. ...

The Problem of the Power Elite
Post Date: 2009-07-03 20:00:19 by Turtle

It is the chief myth of our age that the legitimacy of government is derived by Lockean consent. Consent is the founding principle of democracy and everyone knows how sacred, beautious and alround super-desirable democracy is. Well, we do, don’t we? That’s what we are told, anyway. But it doesn’t matter. It really doesn’t matter what we think because all the noise about consent is a screamingly obvious sham. The interests of the ruling elite simply do not lie in its own submission to popular consent. They lie in securing and ever-strengthening its hold on power, infuence and wealth. The elite will, therefore, seek by any and all means the submission of the people to ...

Word came last night that a massive protest is planned in order to send Washington a message. WEBSTER, Texas - Police used a Taser on a pastor and pepper spray to disperse his congregants Wednesday after the pastor allegedly interfered with a traffic stop in the church parking lot. Congregants say they were in the Iglesia Profetica Peniel church for an early morning prayer when pastor Jose Elias Moran went to assist the stopped driver, a church member, by asking the police what had happened. An incident report on the Webster police department's Web site said Officer Raymond Berryman tried to calm Moran and arrest him. But police say he pushed the officer, went inside the church and returned with 40 other congregants. The congregants say Moran fled into the church when the ...

The suppressed fact: Deaths by U.S. torture

(updated below) After numerous delays sought by the Obama administration, it is expected that a 2004 CIA Inspector General's Report -- aggressively questioning both the efficacy and legality of Bush's interrogation tactics -- will be released tomorrow. A heavily redacted version of that document was already released by the Bush administration in response to an ACLU lawsuit and it remains to be seen how much new information will be included in tomorrow's version. In anticipation of the release of that report, there is an important effort underway -- as part of the ACLU Accountability Project -- to correct a critically important deficiency in the public debate over torture and ...

Just say no to banks
Post Date: 2009-07-01 19:52:38 by DeaconBenjamin

NEW YORK, June 30 (Reuters) - When it comes to taxpayers’ money, the chutzpah of banks knows no bounds. Take Guaranty Financial Group, a Texas savings and loan, which said in a filing last month that there was “substantial doubt” that it can continue as a going concern. Now it is calling for an unusual government lifeline. Guaranty said in an SEC filing on Monday that it has approached the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation over “open bank assistance,” a method by which FDIC subsidizes “too-big-to-fail” banks in order to avoid absorbing their toxic assets. If GFG’s primary bank subsidiary, Guaranty Bank, collapses, it would be the largest bank ...

Supreme Court Rules Protests At Troops' Funerals Can Continue

Washington - A Kansas-based church has won a fight to continue holding antigay protests in Missouri near funerals of American troops killed overseas. The US Supreme Court on Monday declined to take up an appeal that sought the enforcement of a Missouri law regulating protests at funerals. Groups from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., have been demonstrating at military funerals across the country to spread the church's message that God is punishing America by killing US soldiers for what the church says is the sin of homosexuality. Church members near military funerals have displayed signs proclaiming: "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" and "God Blew Up the ...

Auditing the Fed will Audit the State - Go All The Way Back to Jekyll Island in 1910

Auditing the Fed will Audit the State Mises Daily by George F. Smith | Posted on 7/1/2009 12:00:00 AM [An MP3 audio version of this article, read by Floy Lilley, is available as a free download.] If Ron Paul succeeds in getting the Fed audited, the consequences could be far-reaching. Assuming the audit isn't rigged to protect the guilty, as a similar bill was in 1978, the Fed will need every obfuscating Keynesian to testify and write editorials on its behalf, to reassure the public that monetary matters really are best left to the gods who rule us, such as Ben Bernanke and Timothy Geithner. Monetarists, too, would likely join the "Save the Fed" crusade, perhaps arguing ...

A Debt The Founders Wouldn't Believe

In a 1789 letter to James Madison, Thomas Jefferson wrote: "The earth belongs to each of these generations, during its course, fully, and in their own right. The 2d. generation receives it clear of the debts and encumbrances of the 1st. The 3d of the 2d. and so on. For if the 1st. could charge it with a debt, then the earth would belong to the dead and not the living generation. Then no generation can contract debts greater than may be paid during the course of its own existence." What would Thomas Jefferson think today, as the Obama administration puts this generation on a path to drive the debt sky-high, effectively leaving our children and grandchildren to foot the bill? ...

Recently, the Shelby County Commission passed an ordinance that would make it illegal for employers and firms that contract with the county to discriminate against people based on sexual orientation. Unfortunately, the discussion got bogged down in questions about whether homosexuality is or is not moral. It was assumed that the government can intervene on behalf of favored groups in order to correct the perceived injustice of discrimination. The debate largely ignored the key issue, which is whether it is just, moral, and appropriate to use force to correct others' wayward beliefs. Now that the dust has settled, we can ask about this. As a consumer, I am free to indulge whatever ...

Arizona officers fight concealed gun proposal

Law-enforcement officials are working to quash a proposal that would allow gun owners in Arizona to carry concealed weapons without a permit. The proposal, which is scheduled to be heard today in the Senate Judiciary Committee, has sparked a debate over what restrictions should be placed on gun owners who wish to carry weapons in public buildings, schools and other places. Opponents said the bill would endanger law-enforcement officers and the public by eliminating permits and the training courses now required to obtain them. "This bill would make a radical and very dangerous change to state law," Attorney General Terry Goddard said at a Thursday news conference. "The ...

Talk Show Hosts May Be Accomplices Under Hate Bill

The Hate Crimes Prevention Act HR 1966 which has passed the Congress by overwhelming margins is now facing hearings in the Senate. There are already similar hate crime laws in place, however, this bill imposes much stronger federal enforcement, which is a clear violation of the Tenth Amendment. It grants greater power to federal prosecutors to prosecute hate crime laws by prosecuting those who have been found innocent by local or state courts. The current bill will extend special privileges to gays and transgender individuals that are currently only granted to ethnic and religious minorities. The most dangerous part of the Bill which is a direct assault against the First Amendment is that ...

This includes not only the freedom of movement, but also, in the event the officer inquires as to whether the driver is carrying a weapon, "Your right to be able to hold on to your weapon and say whether [you] have a weapon or not" – as well as the right to retain possession of that weapon, should the officer decide to confiscate it from you. Should you choose not to answer the question, or answer it in the negative, the officer could still choose, "in the interest of officer safety, to secure you in a safe ...

The Right to Torture Americans

Conservatives are protesting a federal judge’s ruling that torture victim Jose Padilla’s civil lawsuit against former Justice Department attorney John Yoo be permitted to continue. The conservatives feel that Yoo, who authored some of the infamous torture memos for the Bush White House, should be immune from lawsuits from Americans who were tortured as a natural consequence of such memos. Let’s sum up what conservatives (and neo-conservatives) are saying about the America in which we now live. They’re saying that the federal government now wields the power to torture Americans and that Americans had better get used to this new way of life. Any American who is tortured ...

For decades we have known that women vote differently than men. In the presidential elections from 1980 to 1996 the gender gap—the difference between the way men voted and the way women did—was: 14 points in 1980, 16 in 1984, 15 in 1988, 5 in 1992, and 17 in 1996 (Langer, November 8, 1996). According to Voter News Service election day exit polls, if men alone could have voted in the 1996 presidential election, Robert Dole would have been elected president by carrying 31 states. We know that the differences between men and women extend to even such things as their sources of news, with women relying predominantly on television and men on newspapers and radio (Nando News July 30, ...
