Obama's Wealth Destruction
Post Date: 2009-02-10 06:54:22 by Ada

President Obama is under the impression that history owes him $1 trillion right now to spend on whatever he wants. His language is strident and full of irritation that anyone would question his right to live out his personal dream of being Franklin Roosevelt to George Bush’s Hoover. This, he says, is what the election was all about. The arrogance reminds me of George Bush after 9-11, who similarly believed that history owed him a gargantuan war in the tradition of FDR. And look how that arrogance led to disgrace and loss, as he unwittingly presided over the destruction of American prosperity while searching for bugbears abroad. It just goes to show you that the presidency is ...

(Updated below - Update II - Update III - Update IV - Update V - Update VI) Two weeks ago, I interviewed the ACLU's Ben Wizner, counsel to 5 individuals suing the subsidiary of Boeing (Jeppesen) which had arranged the Bush administration's rendition program, under which those 5 plaintiffs had been abducted, sent to other countries and brutally tortured. Today the Obama administration was required to file with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals its position in this case -- i.e., whether it would continue the Bush administration's abusive reliance on the "state secrets" privilege to prevent courts from ruling on such matters, or whether they would adhere to Obama's ...

PRESIDENT & CONGRESS GROVEL BEFORE THE FED

According to Bloomberg News (Monday, February 9, 2009), "The stimulus package the U.S. Congress is completing would raise the government's commitment to solving the financial crisis to $9.7 trillion, enough to pay off more than 90 percent of the nation's home mortgages. "The Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation have lent or spent almost $3 trillion over the past two years and pledged up to $5.7 trillion more. The Senate is to vote this week on an economic-stimulus measure of at least $780 billion. It would need to be reconciled with an $819 billion plan the House approved last month. "Only the stimulus bill to be approved ...

Obama Administration Maintains Bush Position on 'Extraordinary Rendition' Lawsuit

The Obama Administration today announced that it would keep the same position as the Bush Administration in the lawsuit Mohamed et al v Jeppesen Dataplan, Inc. The case involves five men who claim to have been victims of extraordinary rendition -- including current Guantanamo detainee Binyam Mohamed, another plaintiff in jail in Egypt, one in jail in Morocco, and two now free. They sued a San Jose Boeing subsidiary, Jeppesen Dataplan, accusing the flight-planning company of aiding the CIA in flying them to other countries and secret CIA camps where they were tortured. A year ago the case was thrown out on the basis of national security, but today the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ...

The Scourge of Judicial and Prosecutorial Immunity: The Prosecutorial and Police Destruction of the Life of Timothy Cole

Although my recent column urging that immunity for police, prosecutors, and judges be eliminated received a lot of positive response, nonetheless some lawyers and others wrote to complain that if this actually were done, then those same officers of the court would face endless litigation from unscrupulous criminals. I understand that point well and even am sympathetic to it, but in the end believe that if the rest of us are subject to endless lawsuits from unscrupulous people, then everyone should be put in the same situation, if there is to be equal justice for all. The problem is that many of the unscrupulous people are the officers of the court. Furthermore, there really are few ...

By TONY SAAVEDRA and NORBERTO SANTANA Jr. The Orange County Register Comments | Recommend Eight months into office, Sheriff Sandra Hutchens is locked in a bitter power struggle with the same Board of Supervisors that appointed her. And the two sides could soon end up in court. What started as a debate over Hutchens' plan to reduce concealed weapons permits has morphed into a multi-faceted fight with supervisors, who accuse her department of spying, bullying and misusing public property. Twice in recent weeks, Hutchens has publicly apologized to board members. Once, after a deputy used a surveillance camera to zoom on supervisors' notepads during a hearing, and again after ...

Remember that it is not up to some corrupt government official to decide if government goon squad employees are to be held criminally accountable. It is up to you, the victim to make that decision. You are entitled to your day in court by maxim of law. Governments have a clear agenda to absolve themselves and their employees from criminal accountability. Police brutality and crimin More..ality kills more people than terrorism in North America, yet billions are spent on non existent threats while the real threats are permitted to escalate. Menawhile, the frenzie of police criminality continues...... ======= Police opened fire on an unarmed couple during a routine traffic stop late ...

Gitmo: Conditions Worsening Since Obama's Election

The Obama Administration has made the closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison facility a high priority. One of Obama's first executive orders, two days after inauguration, was that Guantanamo be closed within the year. Human rights activists are applauding the order, as well as his promise that all American-led torture will cease. With new leadership, many are optimistic that the methods American forces use to gather intelligence during conflict will be dramatically changed. But surprisingly, in Guantanamo's eleventh hour, conditions are deteriorating due to a massive hunger strike. Lt. Col. Yvonne-Bradley, a lawyer of detainee Binyam Mohamed, revealed to The Observer's Mark ...

TENAHA — A two-decade-old state law that grants authorities the power to seize property used in a crime is wielded by some agencies against people who are never charged with, much less convicted, of a crime. Law enforcement authorities in this East Texas town of 1,000 people seized property from at least 140 motorists between 2006 and 2008, and, to date, filed criminal charges against fewer than half, according to a San Antonio Express-News review of court documents. Virtually anything of value was up for grabs: cash, cell phones, personal jewelry, a pair of sneakers, and often, the very car that was being driven through town. Some affidavits filed by officers relied on the presence ...

Mike Harvey, Technology Correspondent, in San Francisco I use Googlemail for my e-mail. As is the case for millions of others, it is the hub of my online existence. I have just sent myself an e-mail saying that I wanted to buy a new bed. Within four minutes this link appeared in the small ad box at the top of my inbox: Temperature-pedic 70% off www.eBed.com/Tempur-Pedic - Mattress Sale: Get Free Delivery, Free Pillows, No Tax & Much More. What has happened is that Google has digitally "crawled" my inbox, noted that I was writing about beds, and sent me a targeted advert. To some this is very scary. Google knows what I am writing about all the time. In theory, it knows that ...

Lieutenant-Colonel Yvonne Bradley, an American military lawyer, will step through the grand entrance of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London tomorrow and demand the release of her client - a British resident who claims he was repeatedly tortured at the behest of US intelligence officials - from Guantánamo Bay. Bradley will also request the disclosure of 42 secret documents that allegedly chronicle not only how Binyam Mohamed was tortured, but may also corroborate claims that Britain was complicit in his treatment. But first, Bradley, a US military attorney for 20 years, will reveal that Mohamed, 31, is dying in his Guantánamo cell and that conditions inside the Cuban ...

FED UP: The popular uprising against central banking

The way Ron Paul tells it, his more than 30 years of speaking and writing about money, inflation, and the Federal Reserve System attracted only limited interest outside libertarian and constitutionalist circles. The subject, and Paul as its spokesman, were scarcely to be found in the media, even—or perhaps especially—on the business networks. But Paul’s 2008 presidential bid changed that. Suddenly the Fed was on the table for discussion for the first time since Congress established it in 1913. With Paul making the evils of central banking and fiat money a theme of his campaign, the issue took on a vigor that few expected. Even calling for the Fed’s outright abolition ...

(Jason Reed/Reuters) WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia (Reuters) – Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Saturday told lawmakers that financial institutions that receive government assistance will have to make loan modifications and meet other new standards, according to Democratic sources. Geithner, during a briefing with House of Representatives' Democrats, was asked about a New York Times report that the Obama administration would not require banks to increase their lending as part of revamped government effort to restore stability to ...

[Water Cooler Archive] In Washington state, DNA samples would be taken from suspects in cases as minor as shoplifting if a new proposal is adopted by the state's legislature. For now, DNA samples are taken after sentencing from people convicted of a felony and many misdemeanor sex-related crimes, The Seattle Times reports. Under the new bill, police or jail staff would be required to collect DNA from all adults and juveniles arrested on suspicion of a felony or gross misdemeanor. ...

By PAMELA HESS – 1 hour ago WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States will continue to hand foreign detainees over to other countries for questioning, but only with assurances they will not be tortured, Leon Panetta told a Senate committee considering his confirmation as CIA director. That has long been U.S. policy, but some former prisoners subjected to the process — known as extraordinary rendition_ during the Bush administration's anti-terror war say they were tortured. "I will seek the same kind of assurances that they will not be treated inhumanely," Panetta said Friday in his second day before the Senate Intelligence Committee. "I intend to use the State ...

Thursday, February 05, 2009 Police State Keynesianism: Stimulating Tyranny Victims of the Regime's Narco-Terrorism: Cheye Calvo (right) and his wife Trinity. There's no way to know how badly things would have gone at the Berwyn Heights, Maryland home of Cheye and Trinity Calvo if Amir Johnson hadn't shown up when he did. Johnson, a private on the local police force, was making his accustomed rounds in the neighborhood when he saw a swarm of heavily armed men laying siege to the Calvo home. Inside, Cheye and his mother-in-law, Georgia Porter, were being held face-down at gunpoint with their hands tied behind their backs. The Calvo family's two black ...

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves from tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson As expected, the Republican Senate leadership sold supporters of the Second Amendment down the river in a, you cover my crimes against the Constitution, I’ll cover yours, agreement to confirm Eric Holder as Attorney General. The agreement was reportedly reached when Holder agreed to not seek criminal charges against agents of the state (CIA etc.) who participated in the torture of suspected terrorists at Gitmo. Holder has a long history of opposition to the Second Amendment; he supports federal licensing of ...

DO AMERICANS CHERISH FREEDOM ANYMORE?
Post Date: 2009-02-05 22:20:13 by Rotara

I am often guilty of using the term "freedom-loving Americans." But I think the question now needs to be asked, Do Americans really cherish freedom anymore? I believe an argument could be made that not many do. In fact, I doubt that most Americans today remotely understand what freedom--as envisioned by our Founding Fathers--even is. Freedom is more than not being in prison (although America incarcerates more people than any nation on earth). Freedom is more than driving a car, or taking a vacation, or being able to choose your place of residence, or attending a sporting event. People in totalitarian regimes have, for the most part, been able to do the equivalent of all that. ...

Police raid victim Ryan Frederick convicted for act of self defense

In Chesapeake, Virginia, Ryan Frederick was convicted by a jury of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a burglar who was breaking down his door. It could have been worse; Frederick faced capital murder charges in the case, since the burglar was Jarrod Shivers, a police detective who was participating in a misfired marijuana raid on Frederick's home. But it also could have been better. Frederick could have received the same slap on the wrist that police officers usually get for killing innocent people during SWAT raids gone wrong. The case has been mired in controversy since the beginning. The raid was apparently sparked by a report from a freelance burglar who had earlier ...

Gun Owners of America Opposes AG Nominee "I have many serious questions about Mr. Holder’s nomination. At the top of the list are his anti-2nd amendment right positions.
