According to the Army Times (dated Tuesday, September 30, 2008), "Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT [Brigade Combat Team] will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks." The article continued by saying, "But this new mission marks the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities. "After 1st BCT finishes ...

The "Sin" of Confederate Hero Worship

This week, I took my family to Virginia in pursuit of one of my favorite summertime activities, visiting Civil War battlefields. We traveled to the four great battlefields around Fredericksburg, where more than 100,000 soldiers died in the course of the war. I also fulfilled my lifelong dream of visiting Appomattox Courthouse where on April 9, 1865, Lee famously surrendered to Grant, in effect ending the war. What consistently baffles me in making these visits is the romanticism of the Confederacy that continues 140 years after the war’s end. Wherever you go in the South, Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, J.E.B. Stuart, James Longstreet, and the other Confederate leaders are venerated ...

McCain urges Treasury Department to take action

As I have been saying; McCain says President Bush can take with the stroke of a pen. The only people that do not understand what is going on are the so-called voters. If they did, they would say as I do, why bother? No matter who gets elected, nothing changes, and people still do not understand why that is so. 1 hour, 28 minutes ago DES MOINES, Iowa - Republican presidential nominee John McCain is urging the Treasury Department to intervene aggressively to limit damage from the financial meltdown, action that McCain says President Bush can take with the stroke of a pen. Opening a business round-table Tuesday in Des Moines, Iowa, McCain said he has urged the Treasury to use its ...

Hurricanes Gustav and Ike have caused severe gasoline shortages throughout the southeastern U.S., especially in Georgia and the Carolinas. The hurricanes disrupted the two major pipelines feeding the southeast from the Gulf of Mexico, Colonial and Plantation, temporarily knocking out up to 60% of the Gulf of Mexico’s oil production. The southeast is still – two weeks after Ike made landfall, and about a month after the arrival of Gustav – facing rampant gasoline shortages, which analysts expect to last at least another couple of weeks. According to the Washington Post, half of the gas stations in Atlanta were closed last week; most that were open had hour-long lines of ...

At Guantánamo, bizarre proceedings with the 9/11 suspects raise questions about a prisoner's psychiatric evaluation and the murky role of the CIA. Sept. 29, 2008 | GUANTÁNAMO BAY, Cuba -- It was the second day of a round of pretrial hearings in the 9/11 case, and Ramzi Binalshibh, one of five accused al-Qaida operatives, was in an angry mood. He didn't seem upset about facing the death penalty; in a previous round of hearings he had declared that he would embrace martyrdom. What bothered him were his lawyers' efforts to save his life. Complaining about his military defense counsel, Binalshibh, a Yemeni, stated categorically: "I refuse that she speaks on my ...

The Rescue Package Will Delay Recovery

The Rescue Package Will Delay Recovery Daily Article by Frank Shostak | Posted on 9/29/2008 In his testimony to the Congress on September 24, Fed Chairman Bernanke urged the legislators to quickly approve the bailout of the financial sector with a package of $700 billion. Bernanke echoed Treasury Secretary Paulson's view that the bailout expense, while hefty, is needed to remove from banks' balance sheets the mortgage-linked assets, which are paralyzing the flow of credit. I think it's extraordinarily important to understand that as we have seen many previous examples in different countries and in different times that choking up of credit is like taking the lifeblood away ...

SERVUS (Latin for SLAVE)

Suggestion I found on dailypaul.com. (A Senator in the old Rome Republic once told another Senator that they should have a white armband around all of their slaves so it would be easier to identify them. The other Senator was much wiser and said that if they did that, the slaves would realize that they outnumbered us. My proposal (not really mine, but a friend of mine is going to do it, and I am as well ... figured I'd give the idea a push here): We start wearing white armbands with the Latin word "Servus" (meaning slave) on it. This way we have a way to begin identifying each other, and maybe, just maybe, we will outnumber them. We may as well do this while we still can, ...

RBS will get 'billions' in US bail-out of economy Scottish bank benefits if plan gets green light By Ian Fraser THE ROYAL Bank of Scotland is to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the planned $700 billion bail-out that comes courtesy of the American tax-payer if the US Congress gives the financial rescue package the go-ahead this weekend. The bank's share of the bail-out will enable RBS to offload billions of dollars of questionable assets. The bank's shares closed last Friday at 205p, a 71% fall from their pre-credit-crunch peak. However, analysts and investors predict that the shares will rebound sharply when markets open on Monday morning if the bail-out is ...

By James Petras 28/09/08 "ICH " -- - Human Rights Watch, a US-based group claiming to be a non-governmental organization, but which is in fact funded by government-linked quasi-private foundations and a Congressional funded political propaganda organization, the National Endowment for Democracy, has issued a report “A Decade Under Chavez: Political Intolerance and Lost Opportunities for Advancing Human Rights in Venezuela” (9/21/2008 hrw.org). The publication of the “Report” directed by Jose Miguel Vivanco and sub-director Daniel Walkinson led to their expulsion from Venezuela for repeated political-partisan intervention in the internal affairs of the country. ...

On Dissolving the United States of America

On Dissolving the United States of America by Michael S. Rozeff The United States of America is a political union of fifty states and a federal district, commonly considered to be operating under the authority of the U.S. Constitution that was first adopted in 1787. The Union known as the U.S.A. was a creation of the then-existing thirteen states of the Union. Lysander Spooner has provided ironclad arguments that this Constitution is an invalid authority for Americans of today. If that is so, and I believe it is, then no "legal" moves need to be taken to dissolve the U.S.A. It is already an entity that has no legal authority. In this case, the Union does not legally exist. To ...

Senate sends big spending bill to Bush to sign

By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 35 minutes ago WASHINGTON - Automakers gained $25 billion in taxpayer-subsidized loans and oil companies won elimination of a long-standing ban on drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as the Senate passed a sprawling spending bill Saturday. The 78-12 vote sent the $634 billion measure to President Bush, who was expected to sign it even though it spends more money and contains more pet projects than he would have liked. The measure is needed to keep the government operating beyond the current budget year, which ends Tuesday. As a result, the legislation is one of the few bills this election year that simply must pass. Bush's ...

Drug Dogs Don't Have ESP, or What's Wrong with Judges Today?

This week I write an editorial that could be written almost any week. What's wrong with judges today? In Washington, a state where medical marijuana is legal, a judge decided that it isn't. That's technically not what happened, but for all intents and purposes it really is. Judge Anna Laurie convicted patient Robert Dalton for marijuana growing, because she didn't agree with Dalton's doctor's decision to recommend marijuana to him. Where did Judge Laurie go to medical school? How incredibly arrogant of her to play doctor. And how atrocious too -- Dalton, not a well man, could get up to six months in jail. As his attorney told the press, no patient in Washington is ...

By Jeff Randall "To preserve their [the people's] independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our selection between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude" - Thomas Jefferson 26/09/08 "The Telegraph" -- - There was a time, early in America's history, when its leaders believed in financial discipline. No more. Perpetual debt, which Jefferson feared would enslave future generations, is clamped on Uncle Sam's undercarriage like a ball and chain. US public borrowing is $9.8 trillion - and rising. Jefferson, America's third president (1801-09), is widely regarded as the White House's most intellectually ...

Teaching Freedom Early? Written by Wilton D. Alston Friday, 26 September 2008 11:13 Prompted by school officials who apparently wanted a shorter and more quiet graduation ceremony, seven students were arrested for cheering for friends and family members at a high school graduation. As I prowl the Internet, looking for a juicy pseudo-fascist nugget upon which to pounce, I am often struck by the sheer volume of unmitigated barking lunacy masquerading as "rule of law" imposed by some group of people under the pretext of "doing what's right" or whatever. Admittedly, as a market anarchist — a person convinced that the operation of the free market in combination ...

Senseless violence is a part of American History (This is the title that the editor gave my letter, not necessarily what I would have used--I deleted my name and the name of the Dr. I was replying to) Dear Editor, Dr. Henry ________'s claim that the shootings at Virginia Tech was the "single worst incident of its kind in American history" which ran in last week's issue of the paper is just plain wrong. Not that it wasn't bad enough, but apparently the good Dr. has forgotten Waco and the government's victims there. Almost three times as many innocent people were killed at Waco. The government, through its agents, kill people on a fairly regular basis, many of ...

AURORA (MyFOXColorado.com) - An 11-year-old in Aurora says his first amendment rights are being trampled after he was suspended for wearing a homemade shirt that reads "Obama is a terrorist's best friend." The sixth grader at Aurora Frontier K-8 School wore it on a day when students were asked to wear red, white and blue to show their patriotism. The boy's father Dann Dalton describes himself as a "proud conservative" who has taken part in some controversial anti-abortion protests. Dalton says the school made a major mistake by suspending his son for wearing the shirt. "It's the public school system," Dalton says. "Let's be honest, ...
