INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 1, 2008—Administrators at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) have revoked their finding that a student-employee was guilty of racial harassment merely for publicly reading the book Notre Dame vs. the Klan: How the Fighting Irish Defeated the Ku Klux Klan. Following pressure from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), IUPUI has declared that Keith John Sampson's record is clear and said it will reexamine its affirmative action procedures relating to internal complaints. "Just when you'd thought you'd seen every crazy act of censorship a college administrator can dream up, along comes a case where ...

Source: Wired The Internet Archive, a project to create a digital library of the web for posterity, successfully fought a secret government Patriot Act order for records about one of its patrons and won the right to make the order public, civil liberties groups announced Wednesday morning. On November 26, 2007, the FBI served a controversial National Security Letter(.pdf) on the Internet Archive's founder Brewster Kahle, asking for records about one of the library's registered users, asking for the user's name, address and activity on the site. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Internet Archive's lawyers, fought the NSL, challenging its constitutionality in a ...

According to the Martin County Sheriffs Office, just about everyone wants a gun, and some gun dealers in the east agree. The reason why may surprise you. One dealer says it has to do with who may win the presidency. "That's my 2nd Amendment right. I should be able to have a handgun permit,” said gun owner Dallas Barber. “That's my 2nd Amendment right." And apparently in Martin County many others feel that way. The Sheriff tells us since January 180 people have applied for a permit. Like dozens of others Dallas Barber was denied a handgun carry permit. In his case, he is a Vietnam Vet who has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.. "I ...

WIRED’s Ryan Singel reports on the continued secrecy of the Department of Homeland Security’s so-called “Manhattan Project” that has prompted members of the Senate Homeland Security Committee to “beg” for more details on the cybersecurity initiative. The government’s new cyber-security “Manhattan Project” is so secretive that a key Senate oversight panel has been reduced to writing a letter to beg for answers to the most basic questions, such as what’s going on, what’s the point and what about privacy laws. The Senate Homeland Security committee wants to know, for example, what is the goal of Homeland Security’s new National ...

The Above is a speculative map of known ICE DRO, FEMA, and Military personnel holding facilities in the United States, either Completed, Empty, In Use, or under construction in the United States. Click the image for a clearer view. My apologies for not having a link to the original interactive map. The more precise among you will no doubt notice that it is in fact a bit pessimistic, some would even say paranoid. Its contents include every Federal Airfield and Military Base that has land that could be requestioned, according to existing domestic emergency procedure and regulation, into holding facilities. So to call every blip on this map a "Prison Camp" is a bit inflammatory. ...

Post Editor Brady Wants an End to Internet Anonymity by ohmproject [Subscribe] Tue May 06, 2008 at 08:12:08 AM PDT Washington Post editor Jim Brady wants to put an end to the "back alley environment" on the Internet. His feelings and those of some of his subordinates (in particular, Deborah Howell), have been injured in the past by comments that Brady felt were the kind of thing you'd find "carved on the wall of a public toilet stall." The solution, Brady says, is to end Internet anonymity. "People say things online they would never say when disagreeing with someone at the dinner table. Brady has tried various solutions to maintain control of the ...

WATERLOO--- Normal operations on the National Cattle Congress fairgrounds have been suspended for most of May as the federal government has leased out virtually the entire facility for a training exercise, NCC general manager Doug Miller said Saturday. Miller said he could release few details. But activity on the NCC fairgrounds was apparent Saturday, as contractors installed massive generators adjacent to many buildings on the NCC fairgrounds and windows of many of the buildings were covered up, blocking views of any work going on inside. A number of large mobile home-size trailers also have taken up residence on the site in the past several weeks. Miller said the federal government is ...

04/05/08 "Washington Post" -- - NEW YORK — The U.S. political system is, at best, "a work in progress" according to an evaluation from the pro-democracy group Freedom House, which finds significant flaws in the U.S. criminal justice system, counterterrorism strategies and the treatment of minorities and immigrants. In a 300-page report, titled "Today's American: How Free?", to be released tomorrow, the group subjects the United States to the scrutiny it more often applies to the Belaruses and Tajikistans of the world. Despite concerns, today's America is "quite free," according to group, which constantly places the United States in the ...

Homeland Security Update: Chertoff Says New Laws Needed

At a speech before the Heritage Foundation this week, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the U.S. needs to have a “nonpoliticized, serious discussion” while writing new laws to define the best way to combat terrorism. Chertoff said that once laws are written, the public should not second-guess government actions and claim that federal officials are overstepping their authority. He decried critics who make such accusations, despite the widespread pubic calls after the September 11, 2001 attacks for the U.S. government to do more to protect the country. Chertoff further said U.S. society needs to come to a determination as to what are acceptable authorities for the ...

A Summit County Common Pleas judge ordered the county medical examiner to delete any reference that Tasers contributed to the deaths of three Ohio men. All three men were in an 'agitated' state and 'on drugs' when police officers shot them with Tasers, and the judge ordered their deaths be ruled 'accidental' also that any reference to "homicide or "electrical pulse stimulation" should be deleted from death certificates and autopsy reports." Five sheriff's deputies had been indicted on charges related to the death of one of the men, who also had a history of mental illness. The judge further ordered that man's death be ruled as ...

Microsoft may have inadvertently disclosed a potential Microsoft backdoor for law enforcement earlier this week. To explain this all, here is the layman term of a backdoor from Wikipedia: A backdoor in a computer system (or cryptosystem or algorithm) is a method of bypassing normal authentication, securing remote access to a computer, obtaining access to plaintext, and so on, while attempting to remain undetected. The backdoor may take the form of an installed program (e.g., Back Orifice), or could be a modification to an existing program or hardware device. According to an article on PC World: “The software vendor is giving law enforcers access to a special tool that keeps tabs ...

Global Research, March 5, 2008 KBR, or Kellogg Brown & Root, was a subsidiary of the Halliburton Corporation until 2007, when bad publicity and indictments against KBR forced Halliburton to sell its shares in KBR.1 KBR and Vietnam: KBR, having financed Lyndon Johnson from the 1940s and into the Vice Presidential position, was rewarded after Kennedy’s assassination with lucrative contracts in the escalated Vietnam War. “Johnson, who became president in 1963 after Kennedy’s assassination and who was elected with broad support in 1964, used the Gulf of Tonkin incident,” in order to “justify the sending of ground troops into Vietnam. Billions for Pentagon Failures At House Hearing, Pricey High-Tech Failures Triggered Bipartisan Disgust By Matthew Blake 05/01/2008 | 3 Comments In 1995, Army Maj. Gen. Robert H. Scales was playing war games in order to determine what military combat might look like in 25 years. In the process, he created "Future Combat Systems," a weapons system made up of unmanned ground and air vehicles that would be directed by computers at an Army base. Thirteen years later, the technology to realize Scales' vision still isn't available. That hasn't stopped the Pentagon from spending more than $20 billion for Boeing, SAIC and 550 other contractors and ...

Mr. Woodard said he intends to help the Innocence Project of Texas, which worked to release him from prison, however he can now that he is finally out of jail. "Unfortunately, you're not getting justice today," State District Judge Mark Stoltz told Mr. Woodard. "You're getting the end of injustice." DNA testing freed Woodard a full 27 years and four months after being wrongly convicted finally exonerated him. "After a careful review of the files in this case by our Conviction Integrity Unit, it is ...

AS HOUSE Republicans now push for a vote on the Senate’s revision of the Protect America Act, one key point has been lost in the debate: The Senate version of the legislation would do more to protect the Bush administration than it would to protect Americans and their rights. Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear a case against the government, brought by the ACLU and others, alleging that the National Security Agency’s warrantless wiretapping program had violated the Fourth Amendment and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) then in effect. FISA was designed to provide a check on the executive branch’s ability (via the NSA, FBI and CIA) to conduct ...

Every once in a while there is an event that perfectly encapsulates the nature of the people who rule over us from our Imperial Capital. There are pretty much glaring examples of this or that federal politician's maliciously evil nature every day in our corporate media and one could spend all day, every day, breaking down their sickening actions and statements and exposing them for the corrupt lying degenerates they are. But occasionally one story appears that clearly shows how the entire lot of them, regardless of party affiliation, are a bunch of delusional criminal sociopaths. The story that I think is a perfect snapshot in time that fully captures the evil that is our federal ...

April 28, 2008 - 5:49pm Signed into law April 24, 2008, the oh-so innocent sounding Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of 2007 establishes a national database of newborn DNA. This law establishes collection and warehousing of newborn DNA for scientific research and requires no parental consent or knowledge. As reported by Minnesota state health department, 42,210 of the 780,000 children whose DNA have been taken have been subjected to genetic research. As usual, the government tells us that they are looking out for our best interests and have the utmost concern for our health and safety. In this age of bio-engineering and designer diseases engineered to attack individuals or groups ...

2 May, 2008 WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is setting up a global network of foreign-language news websites, including an Arabic site for Iraqis, and hiring local journalists to write current events stories and other content that promote U.S. interests and counter insurgent messages. The news sites are part of a Pentagon initiative to expand "Information Operations" on the Internet. Neither the initiative nor the Iraqi site, www.Mawtani.com, has been disclosed publicly. At first glance, Mawtani.com looks like a conventional news website. Only the "about" link at the bottom of the site takes readers to a page that discloses the Pentagon sponsorship. The site, which has ...
