Mukasey Defends Bush Regime Spying, Domestic Military Operations Post Date: 2008-04-13 21:33:12 by robin

During an emotional speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on March 27, U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey asserted that the September 11 attacks could have been prevented "if the government had been able to wiretap a phone call from Afghanistan," the San Francisco Chronicle reports. As I wrote March 30, we know that Mukasey's declaration was factually false, yet the USAG continues to claim that the government should be able to monitor communications from "terrorists," without seeking permission from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) whose brief from Congress, under the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), does precisely ...

The Green Light. The Infamous Department of Justice Memorandum designed to authorize tortureBy Scott HortonGlobal Research, April 13, 2008 Harpers Yesterday the public finally got to see the full text of an infamous Department of Justice memorandum from March 2003 designed to authorize torture. I will have some more comments on this odious document authored by John Yoo, a man who (amazingly) teaches at a prominent law school. But this disclosure serves as a fitting introduction for the publication today of Philippe Sandss article The Green Light in Vanity Fair. The article is a teaser for Sandss forthcoming book, set for release later this month, The Torture Team. ...

Conyers "Deeply Troubled" by Use of FBI Agents to Contact Wecht Jurors By Paul Kiel - April 11, 2008, 5:20PM House Judiciary Committee Chair John Conyers (D-MI) on today's story: I am deeply troubled by reports of FBI agents contacting former jurors who failed to convict Dr. Wecht. Whether reckless or intended, it is simply common sense that such contacts can have a chilling effect on future juries in this and other cases. When added to the troubling conduct of this prosecution, there is the appearance of a win at all costs mentality. The committee continues to investigate this matter.

Bush: Yeah, We Signed Off on Torture. So What? By Paul Kiel - April 11, 2008, 6:03PM ABC finally got a hold of President Bush to respond to its story that top administration officials, as members of the National Security Council's Principals Committee, had signed off on "enhanced interrogation" techniques in 2002 that included waterboarding. And Bush doesn't understand what the big deal is: "Well, we started to connect the dots, in order to protect the American people." Bush told ABC New s White House correspondent Martha Raddatz. "And, yes, I'm aware our national security team met on this issue. And I approved."... Bush said the ABC report ...

Council's measures appear to fly in the face of state law and legal precedent. The NRA says it will sue. By Jeff Shields - Inquirer Staff Writer Mayor Nutter likened himself and City Council members yesterday to the band of rebels who formed this country as he signed five new gun-control laws that defy the state legislature and legal precedent. "Almost 232 years ago, a group of concerned Americans took matters in their own hands and did what they needed to do by declaring that the time had come for a change," Nutter said as he signed the bills in front of a table of confiscated weapons outside the police evidence room in City Hall. The list of goals and objectives should include: 1.) The right to maintain our traditional majorities in our own lands, control our own sovereignty and our own self-determination. We do not wish harm or ill-feeling toward any other peoples on earth, but we assert the right to maintain our own majorities in our own lands without being accused of ...

Obama, Clinton cosponsor measure saying McCain is eligible to be president By Klaus Marre Posted: 04/10/08 06:42 PM [ET] In order to counter the views of some pundits, a group of senators, including Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama (Ill.) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), on Thursday introduced a measure that clarifies that presumptive GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) is eligible to hold the office. The effort, spearheaded by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), is meant to counter the views of some pundits, who had openly questioned whether McCain would qualify to be president because he was born ...

The FCC has approved a new nationwide alert system that will send text messages to cell phones to alert Americans when an emergency, disaster, or attack occurs. Only three types of events will trigger the emergency text message, which will be sent by your carrier. This is a good idea, though I am sure it will be completely ignored by many. The text messages will be sent for the following reasons: there is a terrorist or other attack that threatens the safety or health of Americans; an imminent or on-going natural disaster such as an earthquake, hurricane or tornado; or an Amber alert. If any of these three happens, your network operator will be contacted by the government, and an alert ...

Clinton or Sen. Obama, Cheney noted in a telephone interview with conservative talk show host, Sean Hannity, today. "I thought the controversy over Rev. Wright was remarkable," Cheney said. I thought some of the things he said were absolutely appalling. And, you know, I haven't ...

Political Prosecution in Pittsburgh Collapses One of the more astonishing political prosecutions in the country was brought by Rick Santorums handpicked U.S. Attorney, Mary Beth Buchanan. Ms. Buchanan is best known for her adversity to mail order bong businesses and other matters carefully calculated to play to a right-wing political audience. She also played a handmaidens role in the recent U.S. Attorneys scandal, sending one of her deputies to Alaska as an acting U.S. Attorney there. No doubt about it, Mary Beth Buchanan is Karl Roves very model of a modern U.S. Attorney. She breathes fire and when she utters the word Democrat, the adjective ...

Somebody at CNBC, billed as "America's business channel," made a mistake. They allowed Jim Rogers, investor and buddy to George Soros, to get on and slam the Federal Reserve. "I will ask you this," one of CNBC's talking heads asks Mr. Rogers, "what would be the first two things you would do if you were in Mr. Bernanke's seat tomorrow morning?" "I would abolish the Federal Reserve," avers Rogers, "and I would resign," a response that brings nervous laughter all around at the CNBC studios. FBI also spies on home soil for military, documents show; Much information acquired without court order Tuesday April 8, 2008 The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been routinely monitoring the e-mails, instant messages and cell phone calls of suspects across the United States -- and has done so, in many cases, without the approval of a court. In 2005, federal authorities concluded that a Monsanto consultant had visited the home of an Indonesian official and, with the approval of a senior company executive, handed over an envelope stuffed with hundred-dollar bills. The money was meant as a bribe to win looser environmental regulations for Monsantos cotton crops, according to a court document. Monsanto was also caught concealing the bribe with fake invoices. A few years earlier, in the age of Enron, these kinds of charges would probably have resulted in a criminal indictment. Instead, Monsanto was allowed to pay $1 million and avoid criminal prosecution by entering into a monitoring agreement with the Justice Department. ...

Bible Is Hate Says US Government By Rev. Ted Pike 4-9-8 In its recent report to Congress, the U.S. State Department "Office of Global Anti-Semitism" makes a startling policy statement. It says the New Testament record that the Jews had Christ crucified is "classical anti-Semitism" -- a historic form of hate. 1 In its 2005 report to Congress, the State Department included as an "anti-Semitic incident" the case of a Polish priest who said Jews killed Christ. Today, three years later, the State Department could not be clearer. Are you one of tens of millions of Christians who agree with Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ that evil Jewish leaders ...

A Tale of Three Lawyers On Thursday in the National Press Club in Washington, a crowd gathered to witness the presentation of the Ridenhour Prize for Truth-Telling to Lieutenant Commander Matthew Diaz. The story of Matthew Diaz was chronicled in this space repeatedly (also here and here). It is a story of courage, fortitude, conviction and suffering. Joe Margulies introduced the honoree with clarity: no one can think it is fun when you sit in a courtroom as an accused, and a United States prosecutor points an accusatory finger at your chest and calls you a criminal and tells you that you have betrayed your oath and you have betrayed your country, and you have endangered the safety of the ...

Homeland Security Committee members fault Chertoff for delaying legal framework for new office A controversial plan that would allow domestic law enforcement agencies to use data gathered by US spy satellites still lacks necessary civil liberties and privacy protections, and three Democratic lawmakers are urging Department of Homeland Security Chair Michael Chertoff to established a legal framework for the new plan he promised six months ago. DHS plans to create a new office that would expand law enforcement and other civilian agencies' access to data gathered by powerful intelligence and military satellites orbiting the earth. The National Applications Office will oversee who can ...
