I had a few hundred pre-tax dollars a month deducted from my paycheck for some very good health insurance. My company paid for the rest. My contribution was about 40 percent -- theirs was about 60 percent. I figured the system worked for most Americans since it worked so well for me. Then I came to graduate school at the university. Suddenly, health ...

16 minutes ago WASHINGTON - Attorney General Michael Mukasey refused Friday to refer the House's contempt citations against two of President Bush's top aides to a federal grand jury. Mukasey said White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former presidential counsel Harriet Miers committed no crime. As promised, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she has given the Judiciary Committee authority to file a lawsuit against Bolten and Miers in federal court. "The House shall do so promptly," she said in a statement. Mukasey said Bolten and Miers were right in ignoring subpoenas to provide Congress with White House documents or testify about the firings of federal ...

President George W. Bush warned on Thursday that U.S. telephone companies won't help the government in the war on terror if they are facing lawsuits from Americans who claim to have been spied on. "How can you listen to the enemy if the phone companies aren't going to participate with you?" Bush said in an impassioned news conference. "And they're not going to participate if they get sued." Bush was urging Congress to pass a new law that would give the companies immunity from prosecution on eavesdropping charges. "I just can't tell you how important it is to not alienate, or not discourage, these phone companies." AT&T and Verizon face some ...

— For the first time in U.S. history, more than one of every 100 adults is in jail or prison, according to a new report documenting America's rank as the world's No. 1 incarcerator. It urges states to curtail corrections spending by placing fewer low-risk offenders behind bars. Using state-by-state data, the report says 2,319,258 Americans were in jail or prison at the start of 2008 — one out of every 99.1 adults. Whether per capita or in raw numbers, it's more than any other nation. The report, released Thursday by the Pew Center on the States, said the 50 states spent more than $49 billion on corrections last year, up from less than $11 billion 20 years earlier. ...

02/28/2008 "St. Louis Post-Dispatch" -- - President Bush addressed the nation in December 2005, a day after The New York Times revealed that for several years he had been authorizing illegal wire taps on the telephones and computers of thousands of Americans believed to be communicating with foreigners who might wish us ill. Bush's attempted justification, however, was as legally baseless as President Richard M. Nixon's when he similarly was caught. Asked, years after his resignation, to justify his actions, Nixon crudely stated, "When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal." In his address, Bush said he had "authorized the National ...

Air Force Blocks Access to Many Blogs The Air Force is tightening restrictions on which blogs its troops can read, cutting off access to just about any independent site with the word "blog" in its web address. It's the latest move in a larger struggle within the military over the value -- and hazards -- of the sites. At least one senior Air Force official calls the squeeze so "utterly stupid, it makes me want to scream." Until recently, each major command of the Air Force had some control over what sites their troops could visit, the Air Force Times reports. Then the Air Force Network Operations Center, under the service's new "Cyber Command," took ...

Perez asked Congress today to investigate the IRS' threat to strip the United Church of Christ of its tax-exempt status over Barack Obama's speech to a church convention in Hartford in 2007. "If the IRS is successful, every church synagogue and mosque that invites an elected official to speak on issues such as the war in Iraq, abortion, the environment, labor and other issues of social justice could fear loss of their non-profit status," Perez said. He is asking U.S. Sens. Christopher Dodd and Joseph Lieberman and U.S. Rep. John B. ...

The president will speak to reporters at the White House at 10:05 a.m. EST. President Bush on Thursday urged Congress to pass a law that mkes it easier for the government to eavesdrop on terrorism suspects. The president wants Congress to renew a temporary law that expired earlier this month. The House and Senate have passed different versions of the measure, which would continue authorization of a program that lets the government listen in on the phone calls of suspected terrorists and view their e-mails. Bush wants the House to adopt the version passed by the Senate. That bill gives retroactive immunity from lawsuits to telecommunications companies that provided information to the ...

Barack Obama on Senator Dodd's Endorsement Remarks on Chris Dodd Endorsement As Prepared for Delivery Senator Barack Obama February 26, 2008 It has been my pleasure to serve alongside Chris Dodd in the United States Senate. It was a privilege to share the stage with him during his principled run for the presidency. And it is an honor to stand here with him today, and to accept his endorsement of my candidacy for President of the United States of America. I say that because Chris Dodd loves his country – and believes in the ideal of public service – as much as anyone I know. From his years as a young Peace Corps worker in the 1960s to this very day, Senator Dodd has ...

I have waited an extra week to see if the following letter would generate any response from those in authority over us. I have been grievously disappointed, but not at all surprised. To the hundreds of you who so graciously and forcefully responded, all I can offer you is deep gratitude for your efforts. We collectively made our last best try. No one can say we did not do our best. The result was predictable but necessary, at least in my view, because what follows in the next few weeks and months will be so difficult for this nation as to be nearly indescribable. I pray to God Almighty that I am wrong about this, but I fear not. The United States of America is collapsing from within at an ...

The Great Tennessee Valley Blackout My mailbox has filled up with comments from people focusing on the “technical difficulties” that stopped transmission of the Don Siegelman feature—and just that segment—in last night’s 60 Minutes. In a sense, this was symptomatic of what I’ve discovered in eight months of burrowing into the intersection of law and politics in Alabama. It always reminds me of that powerful opener in David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet.” We see a bucolic scene in small town America—everything is happy and wonderful. Then the camera burrows into the grass and zooms in and we see that it’s filled with menacing, frightening wicked ...

Crossing the Rubicon -- Posse Comitatus

After Hurricane Katrina, President Bush called for the weakening of “The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878” to allow more federal "control" of emergency situations. But would the elimination of that legislative Act of the Congress United States increase any lawful authority for the federal military to use its power and might to control the population of America? This is a controversial look at a controversial subject. It is presented here with the hope of giving everyone the knowledge, tools, and freedom to make essentially moral and informed decisions in the face of deception, tragedy, and usurpation. Could the Democrats in the House be slithering out of a primeval slime to evolve from a pusillanimous sea slug (native to the Sea of Hypocrisy), into something that breathes air, walks upright and as a rule does not eat its own young? Since September 11th, the Democrats in Congress have been on a downward evolutionary spiral; could that trend have been thrown into reverse by the doings of an even more degenerate species? To be sure, some members of Congress have been doing their duty to uphold the Constitution. John Conyers has been actively pushing impeachment of Bush and Cheney since 2005. And Rep. Robert Wexler has his campaign. Last November, Rep. Dennis Kucinich led the charge to ...
