Krugman: In Bush's world, only the little people make sacrifices
Post Date: 2007-07-07 18:06:39 by robin

"On this Fourth of July, President Bush compared the Iraq war to the Revolutionary War and called for 'more patience, more courage and more sacrifice,'" writes Paul Krugman in his column published in the New York Times Friday. "Unfortunately, it seems that nobody asked the obvious question: 'What sacrifices have you and your friends made, Mr. President?'" Krugman adds, "On second thought, there would be no point in asking that question. In Bush's world, only the little people make sacrifices." Excerpts from Krugman's op-ed: # You see, the Iraq war, although Bush insists that it is part of a Global War on Terror(TRADEMARK), a fight ...

There is no Constitution...

I am looking for feedback on this, and esp. as to what is missing, if noted, to make it ironclad. Or, is it ironclad to the point where this part ends? That is what I need to know. Thank you. There is no Constitution, Part I It is difficult to begin a subject such as this, simple because it flies in the FACE of what we have all been raised to ‘believe.’ But then, perhaps understanding ‘belief’ is a place to start. In Webster’s Dictionary of 1828, we are told that ‘belief’ is opposed to knowledge and science. Perhaps it is with that thought that we should continue. After all, we ‘believe’ that which we have been told, BUT, how many of us have ...

IT'S THE PEOPLE vs. THE GOVERNMENT By: Devvy July 5, 2007 © 2007 - http://NewsWithViews.com "A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works ...

David Shuster Dismantles Fouad Ajami who compared Libby to our fallen soldiersBy: Logan Murphy @ 3:10 PM - PDT David Shuster filled in for Chris Matthews this evening on “Hardball” where he interviewed neo-con author, Fouad Ajami, and absolutely shredded him over his Wall Street Journal OpEd comparing Scooter Libby to fallen U.S. Soldiers in Iraq. Shuster was relentless, never letting Ajami off the hook and blasting him with the truth and hard facts. Play Paul Rieckhoff of Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans Of America joined Shuster on the phone to mop up, tearing the Libby apologist a new one for using the troops as props and for his absurd assertion that Libby has anything in ...

Senator Specter Fights for Constitution

Senator Specter Fights for Constitution Joel S. Hirschhorn On the Friday before July 4 Republican Senator Arlen Specter showed his respect for the U.S. Constitution and his anger about President Bush’s repeated pissing on it by introducing the Presidential Signing Statements Act of 2007. What happens to this crucial bill will test both congressional integrity and courage. Specter had the honesty to call President Bush's abuse of signing statements an "unconstitutional attempt to usurp legislative authority." "The president cannot use a signing statement to rewrite the words of a statute nor can he use a signing statement to selectively nullify those provisions he ...

(07-06) 09:41 PDT CINCINNATI (AP) -- A federal appeals court ordered the dismissal Friday of a lawsuit challenging President Bush's domestic spying program, saying the plaintiffs had no standing to sue. The 2-1 ruling by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel vacated a 2006 order by a federal judge in Detroit, who found that the post-Sept. 11 warrantless surveillance aimed at uncovering terrorist activity violated constitutional rights to privacy and free speech and the separation of powers. U.S. Circuit Judge Julia Smith Gibbons, one of the two Republican appointees who ruled against the plaintiffs, said they failed to show they were subject to the surveillance. The ...

Libby Case May Aid Hamas Suspect By JOSH GERSTEIN Staff Reporter of the Sun July 5, 2007 An alleged Hamas operative is likely to be among the first criminal defendants to try to capitalize on President Bush's commutation of the 2 1/2 year prison sentence imposed on a former White House aide, I. Lewis Libby Jr., for obstructing a CIA leak investigation. Mohammed Salah, 57, is scheduled to be sentenced by a federal judge in Chicago next week on one count of obstruction of justice. In February, a jury convicted Salah and a co-defendant, Abdelhaleem Ashqar, of obstruction, but acquitted the pair of a far more serious charge of racketeering conspiracy in support of Hamas's terrorist ...

London court jails 'cyber-jihadis' for online terror Three "cyber-jihadis" who used the Internet to urge Muslims to wage holy war on non-believers were jailed for between six-and-a-half and 10 years Thursday in the first case of its kind in Britain. Tariq Al-Daour, Younes Tsouli and Waseem Mughal had close links with Al-Qaeda in Iraq and thought there was a "global conspiracy" to wipe out Islam, the Woolwich Crown Court in south-east London was told. Moroccan-born Tsouli, 23, was jailed for 10 years; UAE-born Al-Daour, 21, received a six-and-a-half year sentence; and 24-year-old Mughal, who was born in Britain, was given seven-and-a-half years. “This is a society of true believers. The belief in democracy, market economics and the importance of religion is far more pervasive here than Marxism ever was in Russia.” Michael Ignatieff, in The Daily Telegraph It is the Fourth of July. Should we hang out the red, white, and blue bunting from our office balcony… or the black crepe? Should we whine about the America we have lost, or give a whoop for what we have left of it? That star-spangled banner still waves, but does it still fly over the land of the free, we ask? Or over a country with a spy camera on every street corner…a nation so deeply in debt that freedom has become a luxury it can no longer afford? Whatever ...

(07-05) 19:31 PDT Omaha, Neb. Shirley Phelps-Roper, 49, of Topeka, Kan., was charged with negligent child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, flag mutilation and disturbing the peace. "I have not failed to do my duty to my children, to my God or to my fellow countrymen, and I take my job dead serious," Phelps-Roper said Thursday. She said county prosecutor Lee Polikov "has pointed the big guns of government at my liberty and at my children." ...

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Florida man described as patriotic, who faced prison time for wearing a U.S. Army uniform at Orlando International Airport, won a legal battle Thursday when an Orange County, Fla., judge ruled the state law unconstitutional. In May, Fernando Montas, who is not a member of the military, was arrested at OIA for violating a state law prohibiting civilians from wearing military clothing. "My client is patriotic with what is going on overseas and he is proud to be in this country and was basically exercising his First Amendment rights to freedom of speech," Montas' attorney Rajan Joshi said. Under Florida law, a person could be sent to jail for wearing a ...

North American Union to be presented to Congress by powerful think tank Globalist political heavyweights are preparing to formally propose to Congress the merger of the U.S., Canada and Mexico into a North American Union at the end of summer after they held secret meetings to devise a plan that will be presented to representatives of all three governments. "A powerful think tank chaired by former Sen. Sam Nunn and guided by trustees including Richard Armitage, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Harold Brown, William Cohen and Henry Kissinger, is in the final stages of preparing a report to the White House and U.S. Congress on the benefits of integrating the U.S., Mexico and Canada into one ...

White House: "Equal Justice?"

White House: "Equal Justice?" By Paul Kiel - July 5, 2007, 2:27 PM Sometimes it's just too easy. From this afternoon's White House press briefing: Q Scott, is Scooter Libby getting more than equal justice under the law? Is he getting special treatment? MR. STANZEL: Well, I guess I don't know what you mean by "equal justice under the law." But this is a unique case, there's no doubt about that. And we have said that there are a lot of people on all sides of this issue who've made good points. The President took a very measured approach to it. He believed that the jury verdict should be respected and -- but he did feel that the sentence was ...

Please let me state that this post is a lead-in to the post I will do today or tomorrow about the Constitution. However, this post does stand on it's own, but I am using it to explain what happens when the Constitution is believed in without foundation for the belief. This post is long. However, I will promise you that if you take the time to read it you will begin to understand the United States as never before, and, why we have arrived at this point of time in opposition to the United States. Who is running America? Have you ever asked that question? Under the doctrine of Parens Patriae, "Government As Parent", as a result of the manipulated bankruptcy of the United States ...

LIBBY PAYS $250,000 FINE Posted: Thursday, July 05, 2007 1:32 PM by Mark Murray Categories: White House, Courts From NBC's Joel Seidman and Mark Murray Convicted former top White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby has paid the fine of $250,400.00. The U.S. District Court has posted the canceled check on the docket this afternoon. (Our question: Where did Libby get this money to write this hefty check?) In commuting Libby's sentence, President Bush said that the former vice presidential aide had suffered enough, and that the 30-month prison term ordered up by a federal judge was "excessive." The White House still wanted Libby, however, to pay a fine of $250 ...

July 4, 2007 Crime and Non-Punishment Libby pardon sends a message – and it isn't pretty… by Justin Raimondo In commuting Scooter Libby's sentence so that the vice president's former chief of staff won't spend a minute in jail, the president is sending a message, one that, while going out to multiple recipients, consists of a sentiment succinctly summed up in two words: Screw you! The first recipient is the general public, which is being disabused of the notion that America is a country without an aristocracy. As chief prosecutor Patrick J. "Bulldog" Fitzgerald averred: "It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar ...

Bush commutes Libby's sentence, while his lawyers come down hard on everyone else. What's stunning about President Bush's commutation of Scooter Libby's sentence, if you're a criminal defense lawyer, isn't that it was politically motivated. Or that it tramples on principles of equal justice. Or even that it is the latest in a long string of Bush administration assaults on the rule of law. Rather, what's astonishing is that the factors Bush relied on in commuting Libby's sentence are the same ones that the administration has aggressively sought to preclude judges from considering when imposing sentences on everyone else. The specific bases Bush gave for the ...
