Rove Emails Missing from RNC Server By Paul Kiel - April 12, 2007, 4:18 PM In a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales today, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, asked that the Justice Department retain all emails received or sent to a White House official's RNC-issued email address. But he also provided more details about those emails on the RNC servers -- details derived from his staff's interview with the RNC's counsel Rob Kelner. According to Kelner, the RNC stopped deleting all of the White House staff's emails in response to "unspecified legal inquiries" (i.e. Pat Fitzgerald's ...

White House lost FIVE MILLION e-mails, CREW reveals by John Aravosis (DC) · 4/12/2007 02:46:00 PM ET FIVE MILLION e-mails were lost by the White House according to a just released report from CREW called "WITHOUT A TRACE: The Missing White House Emails and the Violations of the Presidential Records Act." FIVE MILLION...that's insane. As I explained in the post below, Bush staffers have been already been using separate RNC e-mail accounts to conduct official business in order to avoid the law and hide evidence. How? Because White House officials are supposed to use White House email accounts and White House Blackberrys to conduct official business (this is required ...

CEO to the Rescue (CHENEY ALSO ON SCENE AT BUSH'S KLUTZ MOMENT)

CEO to the Rescue Speaking of salaries, Ford Motor Co. chief executive Alan Mulally may be worth every penny of that heart-stopping $28 million he made in his first four months last year as head of the company. Turns out he saved President Bush-- and apparently Vice President Cheney-- from blowing themselves up at the White House on March 26. Ford, which lost $12.7 billion last year, wanted to show off its new hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid, Mulally told reporters last week at the New York auto show. So the company decided to give Bush a demonstration during a dog-and-pony at the White House. Ford had an electrical outlet installed on the South Lawn and ran a charging cord to the ...

Presidential candidate Ron Paul has warned that the US is now at a crisis point because the people have been so neglectful of protecting their liberties and big government has been so effective in eroding them. He warned that the elite are prepared to concoct events to scare the American people and asserted that the 2008 Presidential election is a contest between the people who care about their freedoms and those who are willing to succumb to the temptations of dictatorship. Congressman Ron Paul joined Alex Jones on air this week for a full hour to discuss his ongoing Presidential campaign and give his views on what he believes the fundamental issues are in America today. The Congressman ...

5:03 pm: Congressional investigators probe why White House aides used GOP-sponsored e-mail accounts By JENNIFER LOVEN | Associated Press April 11, 2007 WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House said Wednesday it had mishandled Republican Party-sponsored e-mail accounts used by nearly two dozen presidential aides, resulting in the loss of an undetermined number of e-mails concerning official White House business. Congressional investigators looking into the administration's firing of eight federal prosecutors already had the nongovernmental e-mail accounts in their sights because some White House aides used them to help plan the U.S. attorneys' ouster. Democrats were questioning whether ...

How McClatchy Reporter Cracked 'AttorneyGate' Scandal Her experience, and contacts, outside the Beltway helped Marisa Taylor break some of the key early stories in the still-evolving scandal involving the firing of eight U.S. attorneys. By Greg Mitchell (April 10, 2007) -- The current scandal swirling around the firing of eight U.S. attorneys first reached the mainstream media in a major way via a report from McClatchy Newspapers' Washington, D.C., bureau. That scoop had been fed by items that had appeared for weeks on political blogs. How is it that the resource-rich Washington Post and New York Times did not break the "AttorneyGate" story above ground? One ...

Scandal Limo Co. Owner Speaks By Paul Kiel - April 11, 2007, 11:29 AM Finally, we hear from Christopher Baker of Shirlington Limousine. Now that his champion Duke Cunningham's in the slammer, he's lost his contract with the Department of Homeland Security, and he's not happy about it. And in the interview, he finally airs his views on the characters in the Cunningham saga. Brent Wilkes? He's a nice, upstanding guy. But Mitch Wade? He's got a "bad spirit." But above all, he wants the world to know that he's no pimp. Just bad luck with customers. From The Hill: A Washington transportation company that was questioned in the Randy “Duke” ...

Neocons and nepotism? Sex, money & the fall of Wolfowitz The man affectionately known as 'Wolfie' by George Bush has struggled to make friends in his new job as the head of the World Bank. Now his staff are accusing him of lavishing promotions and pay rises on his girlfriend By Rupert Cornwell Published: 11 April 2007 For a mild-mannered and scrupulously polite man, Paul Wolfowitz has a remarkable knack of attracting controversy. There are the minuscule controversies - such as when, in his current incarnation as President of the World Bank, he was seen to have holes in his socks when he took off the mandatory slippers after a visit to a mosque in Turkey earlier this year. ...

Nations Chief Spy Wants To Expand Eavesdropping Powers

President Bush's spy chief is pushing to expand the government's surveillance authority at the same time the administration is under attack for stretching its domestic eavesdropping powers. National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell has circulated a draft bill that would expand the government's powers under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, liberalizing how that law can be used. Known as "FISA," the 1978 law was passed to allow surveillance in espionage and other foreign intelligence investigations, but still allow federal judges on a secretive panel to ensure protections for U.S. citizens -- at home or abroad -- and other permanent U.S. residents. The ...

The Second Amendment is Second Only to the First

The Second Amendment is Second Only to the First People who try to limit the second amendment to hunting needs or the maintenance of a State Guard unit are an affront to the sacrifice and genius of the founding fathers. The purpose of the second amendment is to assure that Americans stay armed, as the ultimate check on a government created with checks and balances. Our founding fathers rightly feared having a central government that had the power to dominate citizens and deprive them of their liberties. They saw first hand that a country of well armed citizens could overthrow a government which oppressed them. The goal of the second amendment is to keep our federal government from ever ...

The Patriot Act Is Being Used Against Us by Maccabee [Subscribe] Tue Apr 10, 2007 at 06:40:45 AM PDT Is there anyone wondering really why the Patriot Act was passed? Was it to protect us or to go after Bush¹s political enemies? That's why they avoid Congressional oversight in promoting Judiciary. That's why the 108th and 109th Congress hid provisions in the bill and presented it at the last possible second- provisions that would enable quick decisions in case a bomb went off in St Louis...or someone decided to investigate the misdeeds of a key Republican. That's why they don¹t want the Bill of Rights or the Constitution to get in the way of the capture and detention ...

This systematic censorship of Middle East reality continues even in schools Published: 07 April 2007 Laila al-Arian was wearing her headscarf at her desk at Nation Books, one of my New York publishers. No, she told me, it would be difficult to telephone her father. At the medical facility of his North Carolina prison, he can only make a few calls - monitored, of course - and he was growing steadily weaker. Sami al-Arian is 49 but he stayed on hunger strike for 60 days to protest the government outrage committed against him, a burlesque of justice which has, of course, largely failed to rouse the sleeping dogs of American journalism in New York, Washington and Los Angeles. All praise, ...

Christian law school (Pat Robertson's Regent University School of Law) 'has had no better friend than the Bush administration'

The Pat Robertson-founded Regent University School of Law has come under the media's spotlight in recent days, as one of its graduates, Monica Goodling, has been placed at the center of the debate over the firing of U.S. attorneys, according to the Boston Globe. Many are finding that Regent's influence and alumni placements in the current administration outsize its academic record and credentials. "Regent University School of Law, founded by televangelist Pat Robertson to provide 'Christian leadership to change the world,' has worked hard in its two-decade history to upgrade its reputation," writes Globe staff writer Charlie Savage, "fighting past years ...

Imus Fighting for His Job As CBS and NBC Weigh the Cost of His Racial Insults After a career of cranky insults, radio star Don Imus was fighting for his job Monday following one joke that by his own admission went "way too far." Two of the nation's biggest media companies CBS Corp. and NBC Universal will ultimately decide the fate of Imus' daily program after he referred last week to members of the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos." Imus continued to apologize Monday, both on his show and on a syndicated radio program hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton, who is among several black leaders demanding his ouster. Imus could be in real danger ...

The Essential Myth The shocked reaction to the abrupt dismissal of eight U.S. Attorneys points to the essence of our current political problems. The broad based political reaction to the Gonzales firings contains one critical assumption: this is an aberrant act. Something terribly wrong has taken place and the political establishment rises to defend the system. That’s the set up and that’s the story. The set up is a lie. The firings are normal procedure. The bipartisan reaction is not so much to the injustice of it all. It’s a reaction to the total absence of art and discretion. The system wasn’t abused so much as exposed. How did the story emerge? Eight U.S. ...

Korean War hero branded a terrorist by draft-dodging Shrub Professor Walter F. Murphy, a Korean war hero and McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence (emeritus) at Princeton, was delayed while flying because he's on a "terrorist watch list." The check-in clerk told him that he was probably added because he gave a speech that was critical of the president (who dodged his military service). "I presented my credentials from the Marine Corps to a very polite clerk for American Airlines. One of the two people to whom I talked asked a question and offered a frightening comment: "Have you been in any peace marches? We ban a lot of people from flying because of that." ...

Experts say ruling hits prosecutor's credibility JASON STEIN 608-252-6129 jstein@madison.com A federal appeals court last week slapped down a controversial fraud conviction with a swift, blunt decisiveness almost never seen in the legal system. The ruling struck a blow to the credibility of the Milwaukee-based federal prosecutor who brought the case, and to other investigations related to campaign fundraising by Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle, said former prosecutors and other legal experts. The investigations have not led to any charges against Doyle or his aides. The federal prosecutor, who was appointed by President Bush, and the state attorney general, a Republican, say they are ...

A top Constitutional scholar from Princeton who gave a televised speech that slammed President George W. Bush's executive overreach recently learned that he had been added to the Transportation Security Administration's terrorist watch list. He shared his experience this weekend at the law blog Balkinization. Walter F. Murphy, the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Emeritus, at Princeton University, attempted to check his luggage at the curbside in Albuquerque before boarding a plane to Newark, New Jersey. Murphy was told he could not use the service. "I was denied a boarding pass because I was on the Terrorist Watch list," he said. When inquiring with a clerk why he ...

Frankly, I don't see anything exceptionally stupid about this law : First, the state said you must make a special trip to the pharmacy counter to buy certain cold medicines. That was to curb production of methamphetamine. Now, a St. Louis legislator wants you to do the same thing to buy an even more common household item — baking soda — because it's used to make crack cocaine. Sales of cold medications containing pseudoephedrine, such as Sudafed, are strictly regulated in Missouri. Customers must show a photo ID when they buy the medicine. Pharmacists must log the names and addresses of buyers, including how much they buy. People under 18 may not buy the medicines. ...

By academic training, Chalmers Johnson is an East Asian scholar, and a widely respected one at that. He was and remains a giant in the field of Japan Studies -- my undergraduate major 20 years ago. His seminal work MITI and the Japanese Miracle was required reading back then, and probably still is today. In the introduction to his latest book Nemesis - The Last Days of the American Republic, he therefore makes a point to tell readers that he never intended to write a trilogy on the decline and fall of the American empire. However, he says "events intervened" -- as they sometimes do. His first book in this trilogy, Blowback (2000) was based on his 30+ years of studying East Asia ...

Turkey’s con game: US officials on the take, FBI provides cover

“Turkey is not as politically stable or as secular domestically as they would have you believe,” said one long time observer of US-Turkish relations in Washington, DC. “The Turks do not have a large community across the United States like, say, the Armenians and the Greeks who have been here a long time. Because of this you see a very large Turkish presence inside Washington, DC.” Lacking a legitimate national grassroots organization, Turkey has built a notable presence inside the corridors of power in Washington, by spreading cash around and buying direct access to key US decision makers in and out of the US government. It all seems legitimate enough: campaign ...
